Be able to order a movie over Netflix at which point they would send you a bag of popcorn and a thumb drive with a unique key. You take the thumb to the nearest Red Box and the key will allow you to stream the movie from there or download it. If you return the thumb drive to the same Red Box within three days to deactivate the key, and then mail back the drive itself within a week's time, you get to keep the popcorn to enjoy with the next movie you rent. If you do not return everything in time, you must throw away the popcorn and provide visual evidence the next day or be charged for the full price of the movie.

Out dumb that, Reed.

"separate the dvds out so that i can have a different web site for dvds and one for instant streaming, its too complicated as it is"

I think people are also underestimating how inertia affects subscription pricing. Most people I know with Netflix were seriously underutilizing the service, and knowingly so, however none really cared enough to out and cancel. However the moment netflix announced the price changes it gave everyone an incentive to go ahead and cancel their accounts. I know I was one of the people like that, and I know at least 2 others who were the same. If they had figured out a way to make it incremental it would've been a lot more successful.

There is a line between "dumb" and "surreal," davepoobond, and you've just crossed it.

Yeah, I was going to post something along this lines earlier but couldn't word it properly. I had the 2 disc plan for ages and they just sat around my house unused. Once the big price hike came I canceled that and went streaming only. After the Qwikster nonsense I really started to consider how much I even use the streaming service (not much these days). I kept it, but I can easily see the situation where someone reaches the opposite conclusion. They were really better off (in the short term at least) just cruising or making SMALL adjustments like the first (and forgotten) recent price hike. If they really believe the changes were the best long term they should have kept firm.

What would've been smart would be to raise prices, but get into the video game rental business too (like they were planning to do with Qwikster).

I'm sure some would still be pissed and cancel, but having game rentals would attract enough new subscribers to make up for it. And at least they would've been able to say "We raised the prices, but you're getting more for your money" etc.

I still think it was a horrible decision to take away the ability to add movies to your DVD queue through the mobile app.

I would bolt, but I found Blockbuster's service not ready for prime time...yet.

Every move netflix has made lately has been anti-consumer, and they wonder why they are losing subscribers. Fuck netflix. Their stock deserves this until the CEO can reassure people that he is not a total fucking idiot.

Can you elaborate? I have not read or heard anything about studios wanting to shut down Netflix.

Not directly but they want a bigger piece of the pie by raising their prices. And I'm sure some studios want to distribute their own titles themselves.

2 price increases in the same year are a bad idea. Honestly, I expected more people to leave.

Myself, I downgraded my account. I use to pay $17.99 ( I think), now I pay $7.99. Fuck Netflix, as soon as it dies or the BBC starts putting their content on Hulu I'm moving to Hulu Plus.

I didn't use the dvd's enough to get the dvd plan, and I had watched everything I wanted to on the streaming.

Plus, I can get amazon instant video for $40 a year.

Also, bringing up a search for netflix stock fills my page with netflix adds.

A company raises their prices by 60% while simultaneously improving the quality of their service by 0% and people are not only surprised that they lost subscribers, but are calling those who cancelled cheap? Netflix deserves whatever happens to them.

We were relatively happy with Netflix when we had it, even with the limited amount of content on the Canadian side. Sadly, we just didn't use it more than a few times per month, and so it wasn't worth our $7.99.

I will always be thankful that Netflix allows you to cancel online with a couple clicks of the mouse.

If any of you play options and want to speculate, check out the January 2013 options. All have been heavily beaten. I'm thinking of getting the $150 calls at $5.50ish

The resurrection of Blockbuster, coming soon.
Blockbuster never died, they were in trouble. Dish Network bought them, and tightened em up. Since I'm a Dish subscriber, I actually cancelled my Netflix subscription to go with their new Blockbuster Movie pass.

A streaming library I like better than Netflix's. Plus 1 in store rental out at a time, keep it as long as you want, includes Blu-Ray and Games. Plus 1 disc out by mail, again keep it as long as you want, including Blu-Ray and Games and the ability to take it to a store to get another immediately without waiting.

All for 10$, I said hell yes. That shit would have cost me almost $20 on Netflix and they don't even do games.

Hm, I have Dish Network and haven't really looked into this yet. Maybe I should.

If you have a store by you, mine currently has a special where the first month is 1 out at a time for 7.49. DVD, BluRay, or Game. After the first month, its 15$. Since I pass it on the way to school and its near my work, turned out to be pretty fantastic. I rent my movies now on BluRay, while I've rented both Gears and Dante's Inferno. Planning to get Uncharted 3, MW3, and a few others too. While shuffling inbetween movies.

I like Netflix convenience, but adding in games really pushed me towards Blockbuster and with the return in store. I can pick up something new without the 3 day wait period.

Same here. The Blockbuster in Boone is just down the street. I love their selection and ease of use. :)

I was going to mention that "just $7.99" doesn't count for much if people are not using the service regularly, but you worded it far better. I still have streaming. If they don't do a better job of getting movies to streaming in a more timely fashion or cut the shit where random episodes of TV shows are only available on disc, I'll probably end up canceling. Something that doesn't get used isn't worth any amount of money.

For a few years we had the best content delivering platform in a single company and this year it came crashing down in a blaze of epic failure. It's kind of sad.

I've got a BB nearby, so I may just do this.

Yeah, but the problem here being you have to sign up with Dish Network. FUCK THAT.
