Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Ailynn

Faith - Hope - Love

I just finished this prequel series, and it was amazingly well done.

There is a 'making of' special after the final episode that goes into some of the incredibly in-depth creative process...both for the Netflix series as well as the original film. Many of the same people who worked on the first film we're thoughtfully pulled in to work on this series, and the amount of heart that has gone into every painstaking detail is inspiring.

The series gave me a deeper sense of enjoyment of the original film, as well as the world lore as a whole. I highly recommend it to anyone who was ever a fan of the original film, or to anyone that simply enjoys vivid imagination brought to life through beautiful artistry. :)

I haven't watched this yet but it is on my list, probably will after I go through all of Twin Peaks

I have watched a couple reviews and they seemed mostly positive

Just finished up with episode six. So far, there have been a handful of scenes that moved a bit too quickly, in terms of story-progress, but I'm really liking it.

And the effects are some of the best I've ever seen.

I’ve never seen the movie. Does it matter if I watch the Netflix show before the movie? The little teaser that runs on Netflix mesmerizes me - love the film’s aesthetic.

Actually, the Netflix series is a prequel to the original film. Go for it! :)

Finished the season last night. The last episode is straight up BRUTAL compared to the rest of the show.

All in all, my original take still stands: There are a few places where the story line moves too quickly, but it's pretty darn good over all.

As I said in the other thread, I'd recommend watching the series first. The movie would spoil some things that are introduced for the first time chronologically in season 1, since it's a prequel. Now whether you want to wait and watch the movie after the entire series wraps after how many seasons they end up going with, is up to you. Watching the movie will basically spoil the fate/conclusion of everyone, but then you'd be watching the series to see how things get to that point.

I actually purchased the 4K steelbook special edition last year from Best Buy out of nostalgia, but have yet to watch this show.

Honestly, how does it compare or complement?

Saying the original Dark Crystal film is a spoiler is a joke. You are by far better off watching the movie first to understand what is going on.

Just watched all of this is a relatively short time. They rushed it a tad but it was excellent oveerall. Better than many fantasy movies.

I love the original movie and so want to see this.

I even have the new tactics game wishlisted on GOG.

Plus unlike Star Wars or Star Trek, this show seems to be keeping the same tone and feel of the original movie. Sticking to their roots.

I would love more of a Dark Crystal universe or Brian Froud universe.

I miss having internet on PC and not being able to watch shows like Dark Crystal or The Midichlorian.

you know after I talked shit about it I actually watched it and didn't hate it. The show must have cost a fortune to make which is why I'm assuming it was cancelled. It was very high quality though. The set pieces, the puppets and the costumes on them were all really, really well done.

So, Netflix canceled it :messenger_crying:

This is devastating to me :(

Well at least we got season 1 which as Ailynn Ailynn said is amazing.
I hope people see in that puppetry is not dead and great things can still be made.

It always saddens me when true artistry is just ignored for broad appeal mediocrity.
I wish that stuff would still get made even with smaller budgets.

i didnt think it was all that great. the puppet/animatronics were pretty cool, but i dont have that same fascination with them as everyone else.

i really tried to get into this show, but it was too overly dramatic for me. i mean... theyre these cute little fucking muppets lol. i cant take them seriously when there neck deep in a plot of betrayal, power, life + death, daring and sacrifice or whatever... just give me some cutesy fraggle rock shit. but, at the same time, i know the first movie had a very serious tone, so they stayed very true to it, so good on them for that

anyway, i thought it was decent for what it's worth but i found myself laughing at how super serious the show would get at times. i was on board for season 2, hoping i would like it more than season 1. kind of shame as i know they had big plans for this series or it seemed like it at least

Huge fan of the movie. Got about 5 minutes in to the first episode and got a whiff of clumsy sjw wokeness and that was it.

The scene was the girl talking about how only girls could fly and it felt too prioritised. In the original movie it was a sweet moment. This felt different and I've too much other stuff to watch/play.

Whoa, nobody watched a continuation of a million year old show with creepy puppets? What the hell. How. It's almost like the nerds who prayed for this didn't actually watch it.

Goddamn shame yet miraculous that we got a seasons worth of this continuation, and that it was as fantastic as it was.
Here's hoping it either gets picked up or continued in some other meaningful way.

lol
So it's ok to mention it in the original film but not in the new show for new viewers?
OK

Anyway, dis was my favourite Netflix show, super bummed that it's cancelled.

No, it was the way it was pushed up front. I got the feeling that either they were short on new material or that they were hamhandedly slapping it onscreen for the woke generation right from the open as key messaging.

It's like if a character happened to have blue hair under their hood and it became obvious while swimming briefly in an old movie and it was a precious moment but for this new remake they shine a spotlight and have some heavenly music to make it clear that you need to know that bluehair is WHAT THIS SHOW IS ALL ABOUT GIRL!

It's exactly whats wrong with everything on netflix and why I haven't renewed with them (even during a pandemic lol).

Amazon has better stuff where I live.

Sorry for you and other fans though. Genuinely. I can see a lot of work went into the show and I came close to getting in to it.

I think your quick judgment of one scene, dose the entire show injustice. I think you are so anit-woke you are seeing things that are not there. The male character is still technically the main hero of the show and another female becomes one of the villains you just want to punch in the face.

I love the old movie, and looked forward to this show.
Yet I somehow never got into it. Only watched like half an hour, and it felt so incredibly serious.
And knowing already that all these little fellas will be
dead in the end didn't make it more watchable for me.

That is what makes it so unique to me! I would hardly call it a "children's show" as many meet a brutal fate lol

I felt the tone was a lot different to the movie in that regard, though.

The movie is brutal from time to time, but still a kids thing.
The show felt like a horror series to me at times.
There are def light hearted moments, but also murder. Eh, I just really enjoyed it

I like that the series was darker in tone. They know that the people who watched the original film are in their 30s/40s. It's not a franchise with mass appeal and it was aimed squarely at the fans. It worked really well for me and it looked very expensive.
