New Advance Wars DS Tidbits.

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
First off, the game is Advance Wars 3, not Advance Wars DS (the background):

Who knows why Nintendo isn't referring to it as such, since it doesn't really make any difference.

CO facial expressions have returned!

awds%20smilefrown.JPG

AW1 had them, and it was good. But NOOO AW2 seemingly arbitrarily removed them. Not a big thing, by any means, but fans of the series probably care.

Lastly, a CO ranking system:

awds%20rank.JPG

Best guess among the AW community right now is that meeting certain requirements earns you these medals, which in turn ranks you up. Maybe one is good for 10% offensive capabilities, or something. Likewise, facing off against later COs that have a lot of medals themselves could add challenge. Thats all speculation, though.

EDIT: Actually this is just the NEW new info. The AW community is incredibly hardcore, so they probably know all kinds of stuff that you don't, including a list of COs that are returning, based of split second clips, etc.

Mind if I ask where you pulled the info from? I completely beleive you and the scans, just curious which mag/site procured these pics.

I'm pretty excited for this game. Nice to see the facial expressions making a comeback as well.

EDIT: Thanks GDJustin! I guess I missed most of the info from the European demo reel, oh well. :lol

Its the exact same vid clip from Nintendo's Paris DS press con, just a higher quality version of it than went around GAF a while back. This is where I got the info from:

Looks like another Advance Wars 1 expansion pack. If AW3 doesn't add anything MAJOR or NEW to the game then I will skip this just like I did AW2.

What if... What if it's online somehow?

I disagree. Based on the very little we know, I can already safely say that AW3 is gonna dd much more to the formula than AW2 did. There's already two new modes confirmed, which is 2 more than AW2 had. There's also at LEAST two new units confirmed, both air units. That implies to me that there's gonna be at least a moderate unit shake-up, because they wouldn't just add a stealth bomber and another air unit and nothing else.

The game also has a system where two COs work together, and depending on the combination of the 2 you get different CO powers. Its also been confirmed that maps can have separate air and land battles going on on the two screens. There's also at least 4 new COs.

I guess whether its an expansion pack or not depends on your point of view, but I can already say with confidence that its adding much more to thr AW formula than AW2 did.

I wonder if those medals will carry over into multiplayer. It would be great to see your opponents play style before even jumping into the game.

I dunno, unlike say, Animal Crossing, I don't see a hint of a signal strength indicator in any AW DS screen. I wouldn't get my hopes up about an online mode. Wireless multi, of course, but a long range WiFi mode? Highly unlikely, imho.

If this was online, it would ruin my life for the 3 days it would take me to find out I'm really really weaksauce at strategy games. Then I would have to go back to owning fools at halo 2.

If this has touch screen control to move units, and air units are on the top screen then.... I don't get it.

I believe there was some news a bit back that said there'd be a touchscreen mode or something, but the general game will control like normal.

Personally I'd prefer touchscreen controls all round and tap a symbol to switch the screens around when you want to take control of the air units.

Hmm. If the only new addition to Advance Wars was that they came to my house and crammed the cartridge up my ass, I'd still reserve a copy.

A new Advance Wars is the only thing that would make me buy a DS right now.

In fact, I could be persuaded to pay $200 for a DS with a new Advance Wars permanently soldered into the cartridge slot.

The view that they need to add something MAJOR or NEW to advance wars is silly if you ask me. Advance Wars is all about polished gameplay and balance, the current unit system is about as near perfection as I can imagine. And still in AW2 they added a new unit, new CO's, another level of CO powers, better AI, crammed in tons of new maps and a nice campaign mode. If you whine about that I doubt you are a real fan of the series.

hmmm. that kind of bums me out, this game above all is screaming for touch screen surely. I like that screen switch idea as well.

I'm not buying it unless they call it "DS Wars"
I agree!
Though I'll get it anyway
We should hit NOA with a deluge of anit-Advance Wars email. Or start a petition... those things always work.

Perhaps, we can get IGN to write an article about how Nintendo will be doomed if they don't call it "DS Wars."

I was just about to post this but I got a bit side-tracked. I really think that they should change the name, but it might alienate some casuals.

It's just a name guys. Nothing's going to change, the series got popular over here under that title and it makes sense to keep it. If you know about the naming pattern they used in Japan, it's a little bit weird, but it's not like the name doesn't work.

they'd probably call it Game Boy Wars DS in Japan so I'd loosen those sticks in your bums a little.

I can see why they're keeping the name "Advance Wars" - in North America the name has more brand recognition than just plain "Wars". I was annoyed about it at first, but I don't play games because they have titles I like. They can call it "Super Tanks and Happy Planes V" and I'd still play it.
(Although we'd never see Advance Wars 4 because no one in their right mind except me would buy a game with such a moronic title)

It will be interesting to see which COs didn't make the cut - from the looks of things there are only 15/16 COs in this game (as opposed to the 19 COs in AW2).

Someone's probably already written it, all they need to do is fill in the blanks with words like "Advance" and "turn-based".

IGN mad libs!

Yeah, if this and AC are online, then I would never have any kind of human interaction.
you'll be interacting with the people you play against

I like the name Advance Wars and think it should stay. When I hear the title I don't think of the GBA at all, just the two games. And it does describe the offensive type of strategy you need to use to succeed in the game.

After playing the hell out of AW1.. I play AW2 every single day. I can't imagine how someone passed it up. I've spent hundreds of hours playing it. All the war room/skirmish maps from AW1 are included.. plus a whole new slate is there. That's like if the Mario Parties included all the previous minigames. I play about 30-40 minutes every single night. Most of my war room maps are 300/perfects. Can't wait for AW3. Hopefully it includes all the original two games' maps so I can do them yet again.

Indications are this fall.

Yeah, and it'd still be by far the best value in terms of gameplay hours per dollar among any contemporary games I own.

The thought of an online Advance Wars 3 scares me some how though.

I just don't know how much time I'd spend on such a game, and I'm not even half-joking.
