What are some good board games that I can play with mom/dad/grandma if they aren't really into the kind of board games people here generally discuss but are more unique then the usual suspects?

Ticket to Ride, Hanabi, World's Fair 1893, and Carcassonne are all easy to pick up.
Codenames - party game that supports lots of players. Can be difficult for the clue giver
Wits and Wagers - trivia game for people that don't know trivia. All numbers which gets old
Sushi Go - drafting game with a cute theme
For $ale - auction game
Super-famicom has some really good suggestions too!
Thanks for the suggestions
Wits and Wagers, Hanabi, Ticket to Ride, and Sushi Go seem like a good place to start. For Wits and Wagers between regular, deluxe, family, and party all of them seem like they have pros and cons which makes picking one hard. Ticket to Ride there seems to be tons of versions so I assume just stick with the original to start?

If you get Hanabi, get the cardboard box version from Amazon. The tin box version is available at Target and is half the price, but I heard bad things about the quality of the cards themselves. I have the cardboard box version myself, and it's good.
Lot of abuse of the platform.
This or what are you meaning with abuse?Follow the board game creators with good track records, don't let the 5% of bad result kickstarters ruin the 95% that are great.
Why people hate it, is it this one? https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/140519/myth - it kinda looks like a game one of my group plays.I would love to talk about Myth but no one here has it or if they do they hate it lol. I did back Zcide though.
For some reason I've skipped all earlier Zombicides so I don't have a problem backing this. I enjoy minis and co-op games so I'm pretty confident about enjoying this. CMON are really "good" when doing KSs, they just give you a ton of minis and pump up the prices and people will participate. I'm one to blame as well, backing this and RS.I'll be skipping it. I have more than enough modern Zombicide, and I'm happy enough with what I have. Sold off my KS for the first medieval one right as it arrived, it was just too much "stuff" that would never get played. CMON have a very successful marketing system on KS for their mini heavy stuff and it usually presents good value, but the costs are sneaking up there, first with Rising Sun & now this one.
Got to play more Scythe + Great Western Trail over the holiday weekend with good mates. Did much better at GWT. Really digging that one. "This War of Mine" should arrive today, excited to see how it turns out. From Kickstarter, snark.
Well when a big-name designer/publisher lists a game on KS it's basically done already and what comes to pre-ordering, I like stuff so I'm fine paying a little less and getting a ton of KS exclusives. I think you can expect a certain level of quality when dealing with a "big name game" such as Rising Sun and the comments on that have been really good.I've spoken my mind on KS stuff, but it's been a while. My problem with most KS games is that it's just used as a pre-order system, rather than "this will never get produced if it's not crowd-funded." I don't think you should be seeing games from large established companies or top-tier designers on KS. It's just taking all risk out of the equation for the company. I feel that risk is what pushes a good product. Additionally, most games like these can be found at retail a few months after pledges are delivered (or sometimes even before) for quite a bit less than they were offered for on KS. That's a pretty big kick to the stomach for a lot of people.
All that being said, I'm not totally against KS when a new designer needs the platform to make something unique that hasn't been picked up by a big publisher. Gloomhaven is an excellent example of this. I also backed 7th Continent, which I'm really excited to try out when it finally gets to my doorstep in a couple of months. The KS ended in October, 2015, so it's been a long wait and there have been spans of several months where I completely forgot the game existed though.
It just seems that those people who play card games are doing exactly the opposite, they aren't playing anything else than card games. You can read a couple of pages and it's basically 80% Arkham/some other. I can't be the only one who feels like not posting here because of the constant flood of it.I don't see what wrong with discussing Arkham or Destiny in here it is an analog gaming thread after all. We should look to grow our interests instead of segregated everything.
And I am weary about backing another CMON Kickstarter. I will pre-order it when they are close to production if I am interested. At this point I am pretty tired of their rehash and always late Kickstarter fulfillment. I am also backing only few Kickstarter games, the last few I found were under cook and need more play test.
I hope the other poster will forgive me answering for them, but I get the impression several people have this problem with Kickstarter:This or what are you meaning with abuse?

So I've bought the Star Wars Destiny Rey and Kylo starter sets from Funagain games and I have been enjoying them a lot!
I'm tempted to buy a second copy of each (I probably will eventually) due to them being incomplete decks, but I'm debating on whether I should do that, or buy a booster box (or a couple of boosters). The reason being for the later is that I'm still learning the ins and outs of the game, so I was thinking of buying a booster box so I can play sealed by combining the packs w/ the starter decks with the people I'm playing with. Is there any official rules on that? I know it would be difficult to play sealed with the booster packs alone due to the small amount of cards you get in them (plus there is no assured characters in them either).
Either way the game plays great. I like it even better than the Star Wars LCG which I also enjoyed a lot as well.
I could use a good space ship themed solo game. Still been eyeing Deep Space D-6.

Yes, that one does look interesting.

I preordered The Wind Gambit today. I may never actually play Scythe, but I'm too invested now so I must collect all the things.
Hmm. One reason I have held off is it looks too dependent on luck.I have it and I like it. Haven't really played all the ships but it can be challenging. I've played maybe 12 games and won 3 or 4? Already backed the expansion on KS cause it is only $6 for a new challenge deck.
That looks interesting. Also, XIA (if you have that) will be releasing its first expansion soon (KS backers are getting them soon) which comes with a bunch of stuff including SOLO play. Anxious to try that out since that is like the defacto space experience game.
I have looked at it but I think it would be too hectic and stressful for solo play.Have you ever looked at Space Alert? It's not a perfect solo game (it's meant to be multiplayer co-op), but definitely more of a fleshed out (and unique) experience than the rather Yahtzee-ish Deep Space D6.
Wisconsin here, I really need to locate another gaming group or two in order to trade games with them lol.Might as well throw it out here
Does anyone who regulars this thread live in Connecitcut? I've been looking for a group to play with. The nearest adverised board game shop is 30 minutes away which I'm planning to check out next week.

Oh I've played it a couple of times, but the massive setup and table space intimidated most people I think.Well done! Once you actually get Scythe to the table you will realize you did the right thing
Also, XIA (if you have that) will be releasing its first expansion soon

Here's your board game.No I'm not, wait what is this...oh, never mind. ;P
Thanks for all the suggestions for family friendly board games everyone I went with
Dixit (original)
Balderdash
Harabi (original)
Wits and Wagers (family)
All 4 seem like they'd be very easy to get any group into quickly and having a great time. Ticket to Ride is for sure on my to get list I just want to try it out first since it's hard to really grasp what makes it fun watching a video.
You did good!
The "don't share knowledge' element of Hanabi can be hard to teach to people unfamiliar with modern Eurogamers. And the creative elements of Dixit can be hard to teach too - how to interpret & describe a relatively abstract picture etc. But those are easy to get over humps if you've got your audience right. Have fun!
Ticket To Ride's fun comes from the basic mechanic being a rummy set collection game mixed with the board's spatial connection game. It's sold so much, lasted for so long, because the core mechanics are so damn good as an intro game.
This War of Mine is a well implemented interpretation of the video game. It's got the mood, the mechanics, the utterly bleak choices down pat. There's not a lot of optimistic choice in the game, you really are focused on survival. We need those damn food + water tokens, screw you.
But its rules set-up is really going to rub people up the wrong way, including the people I regularly play with. It was covered many times in the Kickstarter campaign that there would be a "Journal" teaching you to play, and the book of "Scripts" (i.e. numbered paragraphs like Agents of Smersh/Tales of Arabian Nights/Seafall). There's chunky numbered FAQ sections in there, sure, but it means there's no one referential book - if you have an issue, you find the phase in the Journal, hope it refers to a number, find that number, hope it refers to another number for more detail...
A lot of folks are going to hate that indirection, all in the name of 'learning as you', as we do with videogames...
Otherwise? Tough co-operative choices, narrowly focused on a handful of survivors of a modern gritty urban European war. You will choose to do stuff you hate to choose to do, all in the name of a few more food tokens or a bottle of moonshine.
Thumbs up.

I played all kind of games so are "those" card games people, but I and I don't see what is wrong with discussing Arkham card game here. If you never play it then don't make such ignorant comment about the game. It's is essentially Arkham Files board game distill into a card forms. It allow for flexibility that Arkham and Eldritch and at the same time a cohesive story telling that was sorely lacking. Just because the game didn't come with a board doesn't mean it's not a board game. It's probably a better "board game" than most of the rehash and half cooked stuffs done by CMON. And speaking of that when people tell that company abuse KS, CMON is probably the biggest offender. They are a publicly traded company yet still using crowndfunding funding to fund their projects that never deliver on time. So what of they give you a lot of miniatures, it still not a good deal if half of it is junk you don't need. I Don't get me wrong I am not one of those that shun dice fest games actually I am running a campaign of Black Plague right now and I love throwing dice and moving miniatures just as much as moving cubes in heavy Euro but what CMON is doing is plainly just taking advantage of their gullible customers.
Also who the heck are you to decide what games can and cannot be talk about it here? I think you are pretty rude.
I do, I brought up the potential buyout that they can't talk about the other day. I love the game but have little kinks in it that I need to figure out before jumping fully in. Also can't wait for the next wave of Journeyman and Dark Frontier. I pledged way too much for Myth Journeyman but I will be getting a lot of good stuff.
I'm eventually going to do a full write up, but I feel like Codex is the best game nobody is talking about. I'm continually impressed with how finely tuned it is, as well as how great it plays.
In other news, L5R is definitely high on my Gen Con list. I wonder how many copies FFG is going to bring. Definitely my first destination.
This.
A few pages back I was discussing Descent. Arkham is the only card game I happen to play. Pretty ridiculous comments. Well we have am Arkham thread now so he doesn't have to worry about it
I'd say they are card games, since they lack a board. I don't think the distinction matters too much though.Do people think of games such as Oh My Goods or Seven Wonders as card games? I pretty much consider most analog games to be "board games."
I think the line for me between card and board games is when it requires a large deck building element outside of game play, such as Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh. If I went to a board game meet-up and people wanted to play M:TG, I'd be pretty put off. But if they wanted to play Dominion, Seven Wonders, or something similar, I wouldn't blink an eye.I'd say they are card games, since they lack a board. A question for the experts in here:
Can anyone recommend games that work for 6-10 year old kids while not being offensively dull for adults as well? I'm thinking there's a bit too much reading for Family Fluxx to work, but I'm currently toying with Dobble, Dixit and maybe No Thanks!
And I might throw in Uno. Because it's Uno.
Anything else I might have overlooked that'd fit the bill?
"Board game" and "card game" is pretty much as vague as it gets, especially "card game". We can't even say "deck building" without it being clear whether we mean Magic or Dominion.
Personally, I prefer tabletop games or table games. I'm also up for renaming "deck building"
