New controllers with good D-Pads

Soltype Soltype For what its worth - my Xbox Hori Fighting Commander Octa arrived and I tested it all week on SF6. This is the best 6 face button pad youre going to get on the Xbox at the moment. I think I may even prefer it to the out of print white Fighting Commander from the 360 days.

While ive read mixed opinions online - I, personally, have had no issues with the Dpad from using shotos - to 360 piledriver grapplers - to the precise timings of Dhalsim.
I play as Sim, Lilly, Dee Jay, Guile, Honda - for my character variety for reference.
The best thing about it is the micro switch buttons. These feel good and seem like they will last - a nice click when pressed. For SF6 in particular I put Drive Impact and Drive Parry on 2 of the bumpers.

I like that the Dpad is a bit smaller - less travel needed - charge characters in particular benefit. The Dpad does NOT click like a base Series controller.
The analog is an added benefit for SF6 in particular to move around the 3d hubs and lobbies - much better than using the dpad for that. I would never use the analog to actually play street fighter though.

Minor nitpicks:
The bumpers are a bit strange because they are so large and I sometimes hit one when I dont want to - its more of getting used to the controller I think.
I dont love the placement of the RB and RT buttons because they are on the curve of the outside edge - I wish they were on the flat surface like A B Y X - nothing too major though.
The controller is super light because it doesnt have any rumble nonsense - some people like the light weight others, not.

For a 6 face button pad - this is pretty much your only option on Xbox Series - and it actually is quite good. Its a keeper imo and I wish I got one years ago.
EDIT: I have not tested it on Radiant Silvergun or any shumps yet but it does seem ideal for those.

I ended up getting the brook converter then I have a switch for a commander coming, I'll test it and see how it feels if I don't like it I'll return them and just get the Octa.

If you wouldnt mind - let me know how that Brook converter works out.
Especially curious about the input lag from the converter - if there is any noticeable.

The Victrix BFG has 2 really good d-pads(Diamond and Round). I can't recommend the controller though still due to price more so because of several issues I have even though it works.

I recommend buying the new Brook Wingman FGC($50-$60) and sticking with your old Playstation pads(PS4/PS3) if your on PlayStation 5.. Quite a few pros already using it(including pros like Punk). They've been pretty difficult to get as of late though.

Been playing SF6 on the Xbox and the dpad is better than previous Xbox systems, but it's not ideal. Which controller has the best dpad currently, are apparently lot of the good ones are discontinued.
For a pure fighting pad, the 8bitdo M30 is wonderful. You won't wanna play World Tour with it though because no analog.

Controllers need to learn from this:

And the God of all D-pads:

I simply cannot imagine playing OG Tomb Raider without it. And Sega Rally.....

Hori FC fealt nice out of the box but the dpad degraded very quickly. I was warned and but I wasn't planning to pile hours onto it. After a couple weeks so maybe 30 hours, it had gradually become noticeably limp and lopsided. That's what she said.

Hori has to have the worst quality controllers currently on the market.

I had to replace my Switch Split Pad Pro with some cheap china brand joycons, which turned out to he like 1000 times better in quality and feel. AND they have rumble and gyro while costing less.

the Victrix dpad is decent but nothing special.

I still think of the more pricier controllers the Razer Wolverine V2 has the best dpad by far.

the Black version has a traditional cross shape and the Chroma version has a round shape.
but the key is in the actuation, which uses micro switches that feel extremely crisp and smooth.

I also got that mini stick that was pretty neat but broke quick. And the only other horizon controller I had was an fs3 stick and that lasted a few years but the stick mount on that broke. :/

they could be so good.
the design foundation is always there, but the build quality and feel is so often just crap.

the analog sticks on the split pad for example felt like the cheapest shit from day one... they of course started to drift and have dead angles like after a year of barely being used.

the dpad started to creak after a few months, almost like if the rubber pad started to dry up of some shit.

it's kinda wild.

Is there a third party gamepad compatible with PS5 and that provides all dualsense features including haptics?

The left stick got drift as well now (right stick had it but it resolved itself) and I would rather not buy another dualsense as it seems to be of poor quality in regards to drift.

Okay my fighting Commander came, but I think it's defective. The up and forward direction are mushy, down and back feel good though. It's a brand new controller, so I'm not feeling confident with the company. The converter works fine, no discernible lag but the pad I bought is a no-go.

Very unfortunate. Total bummer. That switch controller looks to be the same mold as the 360's white commander I posted earlier. Perhaps you got a anomaly bad one?

4 generations and Xbox still can't get a good dpad on their controllers 😂,
The Xbox One controller's dpad is fine, and readily available - ive 1cced dozens of shmups with it, on xbox and pc - so thats not really the issue here.
Its finding a 6 face button pad with a good dpad thats not out of print.
Good trolling try though.

Just tried it some even the directions that work don't feel that good, going to return it.

i think you have several versions.
i myself made my own usb adapter so i can use my neogeo cd controller with the microswitches.
all you need is a usb joystick encoder from ALI.
The neogeo CD/AES uses a DB-15 connector. You will need one. And hook it up to the usb joystick encoder, just beware that neogeo changed +5V pin so you need to swap it.. no soldering acquired just screw in the wires.

once you try this controller with the clicky clacky (also modded a gameboy DMG with the NGP clacky stick)

Neo-Geo-CD-Controller-FR.jpg

you don't want any other portable fightpad

While it ain't modern I use this when possible on PC for fighters & shmups as its just a licensed USB Saturn controller. They don't make Dpads like it anymore

I will not stand for Series DPAD slander.

Is it loud? yes. But it's direct and precise while also cradling your entire thumb thanks to the satellite shape. Super clicky and responsive. All missed inputs in SF are mostly my fault and nothing to do with the dpad. It's my favorite Dpad of any controller.

Unless that's not what you're looking for in a D-pad i don't really get why it isn't praised

I don't know about dpad quality, but I saw in a comparision that the 8bit dpads are the commercial ones with the best controller lag, the most responsive ones.

If you wnat to use some gamepad from another platform, the adapters with the best latency are the Brook ones.

If instead you want to build your custom controller/arcade stick/etc, your best option to get the lowest latency is to use a Brook UFB (Universal Fighting Board) PCB.

the best d-pads i have witnessed:
-OG nintendo ds
-psvita (OLED, not sure about the other models)
end of list.

I never use D-pads for anything but menuy navigations, anyway.
When people tell me I should play platformers and such with a D-pad I watch them as if they were telling me to put my fingers into a blender.

people that play 2d games with digital movement mechanics with the analog stick are weirdos... you should feel ashamed!

When I was big into SF4 I was a weirdo and switched between different input methods constantly.

I had a cheap arcade stick with some modded sanwa buttons, specifically only for playing charge characters in Street Fighter. For everything else I used one of these:
XJDAM0Z.jpg

I had two of them (the other had C.Viper on it), and honestly besides the shoulder buttons being garbage and breaking, they were perfect to me. I was thinking of seeing if I could find them in storage and look for a 360 to Series converter.

Switch Pro controller has amazing dpad. so is Hori fighting commander for PS4/PS3 and switch. I also like the dualshock (not dualsense) series of controllers.

I had this same pad for the x360. Would love if somebody made an Saturn style controller like this for series X. But I would also work with some kind of adaptor that lets me use those PC Saturn pads on my series X.

I would be unstoppable on fighting games….. even though I'm already unstoppable on fighting games.

I'm gonna look into that, actually.
