Yeah, I realize there's been approximately 3,420,345 threads about DC's since the creation of GA, but I have specific needs/limits for what I'm looking for. :)

I have no clue on digital cameras, and honestly don't care about most features. However, there are a few things I'm looking for. First, something with at least 3 Megapixels. Nothing amazing, but I don't want to go lower than that. Also, the bigger the original flash card/saving device, the better. But the best part is, I would like to stay under $200 if possible. :) I know I'm not going to get anything awesome for this, but that's alright. So help me out here. Any suggestions?

I have the Canon Powershot A75, which you can get for around $170 now. It's 3.2 Megapixels, but I really like the image quality and it has a lot of manual controls which are harder to find in this price range. It only comes with a 32 MB card, however.

32MB isn't too bad for a starting card. I've seen some with 16MB, which is too low. I've looked at the PowerShots, and I do like them.

Save your money and buy a 400 dollar one.

Honestly, there wouldn't be much point. I don't ever plan to use the thing for anything more than shooting pictures of stupid stuff. MAYBE I'll take pictures of vacations or something, but that'll be a rare occasion. It's primarily just for stupid stuff like eBay.

32meg cards are worthless if you plan on leaving the house with it.. You need atleast 256..atleast. Anyways I also recommend the powershot A80, stay away from kodak at all costs.

Your buying decision should not be influenced by the amount of built-in/included memory a camera comes with. All makers include next to nothing. Always have. Besides, flash memory is cheap. You can buy a card with a couple hundred MBs for the price of a nice meal.

If you just need to snap ebay stuff (yawn), you're pretty much good with ANY digicam - even those crappy, noname <$100 ones (or just get a cellphone camera..). If you want it for other stuff, I'd recommend getting an entry level camera from one of the big guys - such as a Canon A series.

Can I get in on this topic too?

I need one to create great digital files of my Art/Paintings
As well as really nice photos

My NEEDS:

- 300dpi 8x10 or larger photo files
- I also heard some places can turn digital images into 35mm Slides
- I need 35mm slides of my work to apply for an Artist Fellowship this year
- I want to spend $400 on a great Digital Camera that can do all of this.

anyone have any ideas?

Maybe the Sony DSC-P200?

You can find a review here.
It's a very good (and easy to use) 7.2 Mpixel camera.

Thanks that does look very good
I may order that one unless I find something a little better from other GAF digital camera lovers here

I sold my DS, Mario 64, and Yoshi for $160. I got the Olympus D540 with it. A pretty good camera for someone who is looking for a decent one but not shitty or top of the line. I think its discontinued and got it at Best Buy for $150. Only came with a 16 MB card but I'll get myself a 512 MB one.

Sorry, any camera you're going to get for $400 isn't going to be great.. The cheapest "great" camera is the powershot G6 which is around $500 online

What's wrong with Kodak? :)

I'm buying the Nikon Coolpix 4600 either today or Monday. The pictures I've seen taken with it are pretty and it's cheap ($177 shipped). The SLR is just a dream.

Canon Poweshot A510 + 512MB SD Card = $209 from NewEgg. Sold.

This man knows his stuff.

I was going to say the exact same thing. There is no better combination in your price range.

get a used Digital Rebel or a D30.

He's not even going to get the Rebel's body for $400 used.. thats atleast $500..then he'd need a lens and atleast a 512mb card..
Besides anyone with such a small budget doesn't need to be getting into the DSLR class at all, thats just stupid..

Indeed. I was looking at the Nikon CoolPix 4600 as well.

Completely off topic; can anyone tell me why some of my indoor pictures are coming out red?

Was just messing around with my 4 year old Olympus C40Z which I'm more than likely going to replace before the summer with a Sony Cybershot DSC-P120.

Figured as much. Only seems to offer auto or some presets. The presets now making the image too bright.

Mind you, when I take pictures with the camera set to automatic mode I don't get this problem. :lol

Had the camera 3 odd years and I never bothered to really learn to use it. Used up batteries way too fast so only ever used it when I needed to.

DCResource review

Note that this is not an answer to the posters who asked for good cameras, but I figured WTH. Opinions are welcomed, as I pretty much zoomed-in on this one as the camera to buy. I want it for the Ultra zoom and middle size.

To fix pictures with an incorrenct while balance take them into Photoshop and go to Image/Adjust/Levels. A panel will pop up and in the lower right you'll see three eye droppers. Click on the middle one and then eyedrop something in the image that you think should be a neutral grey. The entire image should snap to a more accurate color representation.

I just saw one on craigslist from a legit source for $500 for the body, grip, kit lens, and 1GB CF card.

Actually, if this is a flash photo it's not so much a white balance issue. If you'll take a look, the white on the Pixar box looks the way it should. The white balance is right for the color temp of your flash.

However, the incandescent ambient light gives the background that yellow/orangy cast. Because your white is based on the flash, not the colour of light in the room.

I don't know if white balance modifications would make a difference or not... I would think that if you adjusted your white balance for the indoor lighting, you would introduce new color cast issues into the areas that are exposed by the flash.

The way around this when shooting film (or at least my way) would be to apply a filter to the lens (equivalent of setting WB on digital) and then put a coloured gel over the flash to match the "color" of the ambient lighting.

instead of clowning my budget why not just tell me what camera would best suit my needs and I would just save until I get one
thanks
here is the thing basically. your resolution requirements arent too steep, any 5MP or greater camera will be good enough.
1024x768 = good enough for 8x10 prints.
so i'd really suggest a sony dsc-v1, as this camera is really easy to use.
if you want something better, you should go with a canon powershot g5, or g6, depending on your budget.
but obviously, if you want to reconvert the digital to 35mm film format, i'd suggest shooting at a MUCH higher resolution to begin with, say the highest capturing format (RAW) in 8 MP digital cameras, at least, to ensure having gerat quality negatvies.
mind you, i think 5 MP is good enough for this purpose, but if you want something with the future in mind you might wanna go for the highest available resolution.
now with that in mind, the best and greatest digital image capturing is done by digital SLRs, and they are unfortunately quite expensive. if you are serious about your hobby, as in you would actually use the camera to take regular pictures, not just pictures of your art pieces, then i'd suggest getting one. if your priority is the former, and you are on a budget, get a regular 5MP digital camera by either sony (ease of use) or canon (great quality), i'd suggest nikon as well, but they are quite difficult to use and usually cost more.

Thats nice, wanna give him another $400+ for a decent lens?

The 18-55 kit lens still has a spot in my lens collection along with my multiple L lenses. Why don't you compare the 18-55 and 17-40 here:
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2003/1006/dcr003.htm

Smiles and Cries, it sounds like you don't have $400 yet. With the way the price of the digital rebel is dropping, in a month or two, I'd expect to see $500 used D-Rebels more commonly, meaning you'll be able to find a $400 if you wait for a good on ebay or craigslist...

A digital SLR is the only camera that'll accurately capture the colors of your art and paintings, and your 300 dpi 8x10 photos require a 6 MP camera. The thing is that only a 6MP digital SLR will give you true 6MP resolution where one pixel in the source image contains actual data. There is so much noise and filtering that occurs with a 7 MP consumer cams, that it won't be able to give you the true 300 dpi 8x10 resolution.

The "1024x768 = good enough for 8x10 prints" quote doesn't work for "Smiles and Cries" who is looking for a higher level of quality (300 dpi).
