Interesting that the dictionary uses the Pictochat interface. I wonder if it's any good; if it's pretty well-stacked, I might buy it. Would make for good kanji practice, I'd imagine.

but what if your handwriting absolutely sucks? There better be a traditional keyboard interface. :P

.... hey... you don't think the dictionary is a firmware update, do you?

No it's a product, not a firmware update. I don't think you can fit a good dictionary in the firmware anyway. If your handwriting sucks then you're not Japanese, this is a software made for the Japanese. :lol

Cool stuff. Thanks for the post Johnny Ram. Yes the dictionary thing does look sweet. Now I have to decide if I'm going to pick up French or Japanese... .:X?

it HARDLY makes DS a pda.
Of course not.
It's a start though. Just wait and see. It's worth taking note of the rather bleak number of gaming DS announcements of late.

but but but... they're saving it for E3. :wah :wah ;)

1)what did you think? Nintendo: Let's blow our wad now!? I mean they did expand on Nintendogs + reveal Electro Plankton

2) because we've heard a lot of PSP gaming announcements.... oh wait... we haven't :)

It begins...
Nintendo Abandoning Games for Game Boy, Turns to Lucrative Sewing Market

You need a motive to convict and where is the motive in Nintendo changing the emphasis of the DS from the lucrative games business to the PDA? PDA sales dropped 26% in Japan last year, the market leader (Sony) is dropping out of the business since they can't make money. PDA style software came out for Game Boy, it didn't make the Game Boy a PDA.

You were debunked again on another of your "rumours"
Though Iwata did not discuss future plans for the Game Boy, Fils-Aime said despite recent analyst reports he "wouldn't expect" any sort of new Game Boy system to go on sale this year.

"We look at the GBA SP and believe it's still a sexy, strong device," he said. "We think the SP has some more time before its successor comes out."

Hardly debunked.
We'll see. As for Sony being the market leader, what are you on about? Simply not the case. And sales have dropped due to five year base-level penetration being achieved. Only a fool would write off a market that will see exponential, if technology-reliant growth in medium term.

Aslo, not a pure PDA. Read the piece:

The machine will evolve from a pure gaming machine into a PDA equipped to play Nintendo 64 quality games. Essentially, Nintendo believes that with the right software, it has a high-powered, wireless-enabled PDA capable of playing games of a higher standard than any competing device.

Sony are the market leader (23% marketshare), in Japan, should have made that clearer. Despite an almost monopolistic position they're leaving the market. NCL create their core products for the Japanese market and expect NoA and NoE to market whatever they create.

Only 500,000 PDAs were sold in Japan last year, there is little demand with PDA tasks now done by smartphones. There is no exponential growth in PDAs, Gartner Research data has worldwide industry growth at:

2002 - 9.1%
2003 -5.3%
2004 +6.6%
2005 - 3.7%*
2006 - 5.5%*

*obviously estimates. Thats five years, which would be considered medium term, where is the "exponential growth"? Only a fool would believe a company loses sight of their core, lucrative business, and move resources to a depressive market segment getting squeezed out by other hardware.

So if Nintendo releases a new PSPGBA, what does it do with the DS?
Again:

I don't know. It's a valid idea/opinion that the DS could become more PDA-oriented, but Nintendo has been pushing that "games-only" type thing for a while now with the GameCube, and I see the same type of thing with their handheld lines.. at least in the foreseeable future. I honestly don't think that the PDA way is where Nintendo wants the DS to go, but anything could happen in this videogame universe. Rare is owned by Microsoft, Nintendo may soon lose it's throne in the handheld market, etc. etc. ~shrugs~

Edit: And the three above products don't really show that their heading into PDA territory. If anything.. Nintendo's DS games so far have shown them going into mini-game territory.. :)

The japanese/english dictionary looks great! I have been waiting for something like this for a long time, ever take a look at how much real ones go for??

Again:
Your piece and that quote still emphasises DS as a PDA first and foremost, it seems absurd to me. IF IF IF "PSPGBA" were to come out in the next couple of years so what?! Its unlikely to have all the functionality of the DS and won't be aimed at entirely the same demographic.

Sounds like you've got a dogmatic view of what constitutes a gameplaying device, handheld, console & PC endof. Well mobile phones have thrown that idea out of the window and tabletop games were all the rage in the late 70s and early 80s. If you look at many of the 1st party games on DS they only require the touchscreen to play, they're more suitable for tabletop or laptop play than as a pure handheld. You can tell someone doesn't "get" the DS when they try to use the stylus and only use their hand to support the device in the air as if they're playing a Game Boy.

Hardly debunked.
We'll see.
You seem to be swearing by that rumour lately, despite Reggie's comment even...

So what happens when we see, and if nothing gets announced in terms of new GB machine with GC-level hardware to be released this year (or Palm OS licensing for DS for that matter)?

That's a simple one: Nintendo got "cold feet" about showing the machine off at E3, deciding to postpone the unveiling for later. That way, whenever they do eventually unveil it, even if it's a year later, Folder could still claim he was technically right.

It will be mighty hilarious if it turns out to be true, though. Folder will be running a veritable crow cafeteria for at least a day or two.

(For the record I don't believe it. Sorry, Folder. ;) )

That's okay, I don't think many people do.
Roll on E3.
:)

Logic puzzle game for cheap? sweeet. I'd totally pick it up for like $15 it if were released here.

Put other languages on this STAT. Translation device could be a good use of the machine. cross my fingers for german.

I would consider buying the logic puzzles too. Depending on price though. They really need to sell things like this cheaply.
