I LOVE me some Eels, but given how disappointing Shootenanny! was, I really hope this album marks a return to form.

i purchased 'beautiful freak' a couple years back and i couldn't get into it. i only checked it out since i'm a fan of abandoned pools, headed by Tommy Walter, who was with the eels for a little while.
don't ask why i'm saying all of this..... i'm just bored

Beautiful Freak is their weakest album by FAR. Their best album is Electro-Shock Blues, but it's also their darkest and least-accessible album. Mark Everett (aka E, the main guy in the band) had just lost his mother to cancer and his sister to suicide in the SAME YEAR, and the album is his way of coping with that loss. It's absolutely brilliant, and one of my favorite albums ever, but it's a hard listen at times.

In my opinion, the best album to start with for an Eels n00b is Daisies Of The Galaxy. Of the other albums, I like Souljacker a LOT, and Beautiful Freak has about 3-4 good songs...the rest are average at best. As for Shootenanny!...well, I still don't know what to make of it. It's either a huge cliché, meaning E has lost his mind, or it's the most straight-faced joke of all time.

Maybe it's 16 new songs on Disc 1, and Disc 2 features MC Honky remixes of Disc 1?

i used to like'em a whole lot.

but Shootennanny ... wasn't good. the whole underlying _melancholy_ feeling seemed to have been gutted from E. It's now some cheesy shadow of its former self.

I own Daisies of the Galaxy and Souljacker. Daisies of the Galaxy is one of my fav records I own. I might listen to that electro-whatsitsname album.

Why all the Shootenanny hate? I really enjoyed it, and would say that it and Daisies are my favourite Eels albums. I didn't enjoy Souljacker at all - couldn't really get into any of the songs on it...

I also like Shootenany. It's my second favorite after Electro-Shock Blues.
