New GTA V Trailers "MICHAEL. FRANKLIN. TREVOR."

You know what fucking bugs me? We're getting this amazing engine and this huge fully-realized world filled with interesting toys and numerous ways to use them to interact with it, yet once again our avatar allows almost zero customization.

I always like to tailor my characters to my preference. Saints Row 3 has amazing character/skills/vehicle customization. Why lock things down so much in GTA?

And I will be happy to eat my words if multiplayer characters are customizable, I just hope it would be to a bigger extent than what we saw in GTA 4.

I think i judged this too harshly upon first watch, and watching it again it doesn't feel nearly as janky as I originally perceived. That said, the animations still leave a lot to be desired, especially after playing Sleeping Dogs. And I still stand by what I said about it before- it looks a lot like the GTA IV engine, only mildly improved. For the wait time I was hoping for a larger jump.. and since we are so close to next gen it kills me it wasn't built for new hardware.

Still, Im excited. I really really want to see the ganmeplay.

Why on earth would you think they were going to trot out a brand new engine at the tail end of this gen?

The heist in GTA IV was great imo

That was probably the best mission in the game, but the actual robbery was all cutscene I think. I wanna be able to corral hostages, crack safes, grab loot and shit all while switching between the three characters to get everything done before the cops show. Maybe grab a hostage as a human shield if need be or require a different escape plan if you take too long and get surrounded by police.

GTA IV's engine modified is much better than Sleeping Dogs IMO.

Because they want to actually have a character who isn't an avatar and has a background, kids, etc. I would take a realistic protagonist over the ridiculous "character" or whatever it is called in SR3 all day.

That's the one thing that disappointed me about Three Leaf Clover. The escape was awesome (and the best part of the game), but not being able to play inside the bank was a disappointment. It was the opposite of Vice City where the robbery inside the bank was awesome (for its time) and the escape was pretty dull (if you can make it into the cab without getting killed, you don't have far to go to either a pay & spray or your actual destination).

I wasn't planning to, just wanted to know what thread i had to follow to get the news.
Don't want to get Juniored. :P

Sleeping Dogs' animations are good, but not in the R* or Ubisoft ballpark, frankly.
Not that i fault them for it, they don't have nearly the resources, but i think Max Payne 3 is probably the best animations i have ever seen in a game and Red Dead Redemption comes close.
I'm sure they won't act stingy with GTAV, either.

That gif, perfect example as to why euphoria is one of the best things to happen to games and considering how player movement is MUCH MUCH improved in MP3 too, the only downside of the software is fixed.

It always blows my mind when people say they prefer the crap you see in other games over euphoria.

Did you pay attention to the trailer at all? The characters were shown with tons of clothing options, there are weapons mods, and hints that car customization is back in the game. Sure you can't throw an afro on Trevor or tat up Michael but this isn't Saints Row. Also you probably missed Max Payne 3, but if V is anything like it I'm pretty sure you won't be too disappointed in what they offer for multi customization.

I hated Three Leaf Clover.
The Premise was so great, but the execution so lazy, ugh.

All cutscene and then endless shootout with the cops in the street, like any other time.

Should've let you set it up, should've let you keep the Bank crowd in check yourself, should've let you get all the money etc etc.

Max Payne 3 was built on the RAGE engine and runs extremely well on PC, right? I really hope that that is due to proper optimizations to the RAGE engine and not due its smaller scope. I'd be crushed if the PC version suffered from similar performance issues that GTA IV does.

If we're talking ENB then there's no argument really. ENB was making GTA 4 look close to Watch Dogs when it was first announced and before actually.

Sleeping Dogs does have an amazing lighting engine though, I must say I was surprised by how good it looks for the most part (again on PC here, can't comment on the console versions).

For now let's just hope it comes out on PC at all.
I know it's likely, but you never know.

It also ran really well on the PS3, which gives us hope that they've finally figured that console out.

Sleepy Dogs on PC also looked (almost) next gen, though.

I did hear you could change clothes, but can you choose the color of said clothes? I think not.

But you are correct, I haven't checked out MP3 but that sounds promising. I would totally forgive if our multiplayer characters are customizable in a significant way.

I don't know, their breakdowns are usually fucking awful.
Brandon is the GTA "expert" in there, and he thought Lamar was Franklin's brother. :\

Agreed on all points. So many missed opportunities w/ that mission.

I R* confirmed that you will not be switching characters mid-mission. I'd think of the character switch will be a new take on the mission choice element -- you have these characters that you can cycle between who are disparately spread around the map, and when you choose that character, they have specific missions that they can do. At some point, you have to switch to another character to progress the story, just as in previous GTA's, you had to complete certain missions in a loose order (for instance, in SA, you couldn't do the next story mission without finishing OG Loc / Madd Dogg's missions, because that next story mission depended on seizing MAdd Dog's house back)

Can't wait to hear what they do with the soundtrack this time around. GTAIV's was a marvel, anyone who says otherwise mprobably doesn't like music.

Maybe half of my issue is the lack of 'new' engine mixed with the same GTA IV art style. It just looks very similar.

What you might not see in graphics ( I can, a lot more colourful, bright and and a better tone to the game) you can tell already that what you will see is a A HELL of A LOT more content, a much bigger and improved map that is varied and a more interesting and enjoyable story. From being able to use submarines to go underwater ( or swim) to having fighter jets and possibly gigantic planes.

Plus things like wildlife ( is said to be in) and a more improved online experience It will be worth the wait.

Oh, I mean I for sure notice the improved colors, lighting, facial animation etc. Just, it doesn't look like that big of a jump. Its all going to come down to how the improvements play into the gameplay, with animations etc.

I really enjoyed the animation work from sleeping dogs for the combat and movement, but I wont deny that R* games have better physics, etc. Still, at first look Sleeping Dogs seems to have more flair.

That said, that gif leaves me more optimistic. I enjoyed the hell out of RDR and felt it looked/played better than 4.

Why on earth would you think they were going to trot out a brand new engine at the tail end of this gen?

Why wouldn't they create something for next gen systems and PC? Or at least, create something new or make more noticeable tweaks to the engine. Its not that unheard of for games to get new/improved engines towards the end of a generation (AC3, Halo 4 for examples.)

Still, I want to judge from gameplay.

GTA IV's engine modified is much better than Sleeping Dogs IMO.

Well, that remains to be seen. I know how good GTA IV looks with mods, and I wont argue against that, but I do want to see how the gameplay looks in V.

Oh. Blech.

People that know me probably think I sound like a broken record here, but I REALLY hope GTA 5 has more mission checkpoints this time around.

It's basically the main thing that ruined GTA 4. RDR was much better in that regard.

They will; it has been 5 years and even Gay Tony had them.

I can already see a section on gta v mod websites dedicated specially to masks and such haha ( WHEN, not if, it comes to the PC)

Are you sure?

I recall reading some previews that stated you can switch characters on the fly during missions that involves all three characters.

Don't know if you're thing, but online Free Roam in GTAIV really made me appreciate all the systems in place, especially the deatail in the city and the physics. Playing with/fighting other actual people was more interesting because every player was susceptible the effects of the game's physics — burst tires, mangled car frames, Etc. A car chase in free roam was awesome because there was no scripting, like in single-player. Having a shootout go from a car chase through alleys to inside a parking garage is awesome — nothing in single-player was that free form.

I gave the free roam mode a try last night. It was a blast and reminded me of why I loved GTA III. The game's biggest strength is all the random shit that can happen while your set out on a task. I was in a shoot out with some guy and some car came out of nowhere and destroyed him. One minute he was there and the next gone, lol. I can see the combination of stuff like that and record feature of next gen consoles being hard to pass up.

I hope the work on the controls and how your character moves. It feels almost the same as GTAIII. Back then it was fine but there are so many games doing 3rd person right that leaving it the same would be a damn shame. It's like controlling a puppet with no connection to the ground.

and when the Rockstar employee playing the game switched over to him for the first time, we saw him in classic form. Sprawled out on the beach, dirtied and bloodied and wearing nothing but his briefs with the corpses of some members of The Lost motorcycle gang around him on a beach,

Awesome.

To do so, previous missions we unfortunately didn’t bear witness to are required to obtain the necessary tools, such as acquiring the party’s costumes and (ridiculous) masks, as well as the gigantic dump truck that they’ll need to tip the armored vehicle on its side and the escape vehicle that will whisk them to safety. In this way, Grand Theft Auto V creates a need for preparation, something the series simply hasn’t done before. This, in turn, promises to create anticipation as you work towards a goal by putting each piece of the puzzle together slowly and methodically. It’s a satisfying system that creates additional context for your actions, at least if you’re not out for instant gratification.

Preparing heists....YES.

Toggling between characters is entirely in-the-moment, as evidenced by a happenstance where Trevor launches a missile from a rooftop, our Rockstar tour guide quickly switches to Michael down on the ground, and the rocket flies right by and explodes in front of him. It was a memorable moment I’m looking forward to replicating when I finally get my hands on the game. These characters can readily defend themselves when you’re not playing as them, too, but switching between each of them regularly appeared to be the key to keeping the cops at bay as their numbers are steadily whittled down. And it’s worth noting that, while I wasn’t given the opportunity to actually play, it’s pretty clear that the shooting mechanics are far, far tighter than they were in GTA games past, more in line with Saints Row 3 than Grand Theft Auto IV. So breathe a sigh of relief.

Sounds like the character switching is quick and seamless.

Each character is judged based on a series of nine statistics – Stamina, Shooting, Strength, Stealth, Flying, Driving, Mechanic, Lung Capacity, and Special – and each statistic is built-up specifically by doing the action given. Drive around a lot, and you’ll become a better driver. Swim the depths of the bodies of water around you, and you’ll become a more adept swimmer. The Special statistic is especially interesting, since it represents each character’s specific talent, catered to the individual strengths of that character. And while some characters will start off inherently stronger in some areas than others, through simple use, they’ll all gain parity with one another in every sense.

YES...experience system in place.

Here’s your headline: the gunplay is Max Payne 3′s, broadly speaking, right down to the turning circle and the kill-confirming reticule X. This is no copy-paste from Rockstar’s 2012 shooter, though: there’s a new evasive roll, and a ‘combat jog’ that lets you move at speed with your weapon drawn, but not raised.

Again, the three-character setup proves its worth: no longer are you sat behind cover popping off heads until all the red dots are gone from the radar. Franklin stays behind a chunky concrete bollard for the most part, taking potshots and calling out enemy targets to his allies. This is hardly Michael’s first rodeo, so he’s more mobile, running and gunning from cover to cover. Trevor has the most fun, switching to a sniper rifle to dispatch an enemy team setting up across the street, and taking out an RPG to dispose of a police chopper and squad car.

Hell yes!

ps3 version showed.

Makes me more comfortable buying that version now!

Also, LOL you can buy businesses, houses, garages and such that pay you $$ like in SA, TROLL R* lol.

it doesn't stop there. You can pick up hitchikers, do stunt jumps and flying challenges, take part in yoga, golf, tennis or bike races, and - despite Rockstar being coy on this up until now - buy property too. Houses, garages and businesses can all be snapped up, providing a useful, additional revenue source that drip-feeds cash over time

One is decked up as a Republican Space Ranger, the in-game cartoon from GTA IV, set to make a reappearance on TVs in the new title. The other is a fresh character for GTA V, a pathetic caped crusader named Impotent Rage who'll get his own series. If you want, you can take out your smartphone while exploring and take a picture with its camera. This can then be uploaded to Rockstar's Social Club site. The touchscreen smartphone, hugely modernised since GTA IV of course, also lets you browse the in-game web, catch up on emails (where side-missions are often revealed) and access a new social networking feature, which Rockstar is saving for another press event.

Very cool.
Some tasks will require the recruitment of other characters outside the three leads. Players will be able to select their own teams, choosing drivers, marksmen, etc, as well as customising weapons and vehicles. You'll have the option of going for cheaper, less reliable cohorts, or super-capable professionals who'll expect a much bigger cut of the earnings – and if you stick with the same team for more than one mission, their stats will start to improve. I ask Rockstar if you'll be able to double cross these guys when a heist is over; no one seems sure right now, but that would add a certain frisson to the operations.

This better be in the game..sounds sooo good.
The health system has been tweaked – it will now regenerate up to 50% but after that you'll need pick-ups – an interesting hybrid.

I like the sounds of this.

The graphics are pretty bad, apparently. Nothing surprising, I guess, but, they expected "more", apparently. I guess I'll wait for the pc version or the next-gen one. :/ (Source: jeuxvideo.com preview)
