New Marvel Nemesis DS screens and developer interview

Still looks like shit (why, oh, why couldn't this have been 2D?). But, uh... I guess the old-school costumes are a nice touch.

IGN: What sort of experience have the development team had with the Nintendo DS hardware to score the Marvel Nemesis project?

Jai Kristjan: There were lots of groups that wanted to take part in the Marvel project but Sensory Sweep's experience developing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 for the DS Launch, along with other great DS products, made them a logical choice for the challenge of creating a true Marvel DS fighting game.

IGN: How does the DS game design compare to what the console and PSP teams are doing with Marvel Nemesis? Any console features that had to be left out due to hardware or time restraints?

Jai Kristjan: We made the decision to keep the characters and story the same as the console version but create different environments, fighting mechanics and an interface that fully takes advantage of the DS hardware. In the end, we wanted to keep the core gameplay experience the same across all platforms. The DS maintained all of the modes that the console version has and we really only needed to downsize the character models/animations.

IGN: What sort of unique features can we expect out of the Nintendo DS game that you won't get out of the console games?

Jai Kristjan: The DS version boasts a completely new massive arena design for all of its environments along with two new levels not seen in any other version of the game. We also have ten exclusive DS alternative classic Marvel costumes for use in all modes, 64 unlockable Marvel art pages for the DS only and the ability to play as any Imperfect character through the Imperfect side of the story line.

IGN: Was there any thought in taking Marvel Nemesis online using the upcoming Nintendo Wi-Fi connection service?

Jai Kristjan: The idea was brought up early in development but after a few discussions we decided that we would rather focus on making a solid two player head-to-head experience as we have found that the greatest enjoyment in a fighting game was when the players where right next to each other.

IGN: What aspect of Marvel Nemesis on the DS are you particularly proud of?

Jai Kristjan: I would have to say that the alternative costumes are one of the areas I'm most proud of as many of them I got to personally do the research for and decide on. It was very satisfying to know that the DS would be the only platform to have these classic looks as these where the costumes I grew up seeing in the comics.

(Is "The Wink" the worst character name ever, or is it just me? And there's the central problem with the entire Nemesis concept: is anyone really going to want to play as the Imperfects?)

Too bad it's Marvel Nemesis.

The console version looks like Catwoman meets Powerstone, but a shitty Powerstone done by a group of chimps.

i said it in a previous thrad and i'll say it here again....devs, please don't bother trying to do really cool 3D stuff on DS....might as well go down the "artistic" route rather than the "technical" one

exactly.

That looks horrid.

God damn, why not try for a good 2D sprite fighter? Guilty Gear looks awesome.

Truthfully? I'd rather have no shadows, than circle shadows. Circle shadows just fucking suck.

This game looks really bad, though. Typical DS 3D.

I spend most of my time defending DS grpahics. But this is one game that deserves no defence. It's awful, These developers could do better, and they should all be shot for not.

Hm. But with what gun should they be shot?

Uh? hello? Did I say that?

If I have to spell it out for you, what I was getting at is that this game really does look like shit, and it's okay to say so, but that to say the same of Mario kart would be insance. It was tongue in cheek....

Sadly there really are lamerz who troll mario kart threads (or ds threads in general) just for the opprotunity to say games look bad.

I would have accepted both as answers, actually.
Bad 2D looks much better than bad 3D.

Well, that is debatable, because it depends in what way the 3d is bad, a concept I wont even attempt to explain.

I think though that bad 3d tends to looks BAD because of a lack of artisitc quality more than anything. It may just be nostaligia, but there are a lot of old NES games that I enjoy looking at, but only a few PSX/N64 era games that I can say the same about. Invariably, the ones I like are ht eones that display some artistic skill.

I think in the early days of 3d on consoles (and PCs for that matter) developers were just focussed on learning how to use polygons in the first place, and art took a backseat.

Okay, ive taken this off topic, but who cares? How much more can you say about an ugly game that will probably play about as well as it looks?
