New Miyamoto Interview

gozaimashita is correct. You convert 'masu' to 'mashita' when speaking in past tense (thanking him for the interview after it was completed) [/nerd]

anyway...

We've been pretty consistent is saying it's not good business for us, and one thing we might have done incorrectly is in talking to the consumer as if we were talking to business partners.

He's right on the money there, and I hope Iwata's recognized the fact as well. Hell, that's part of the reason why every hardcore nintendo fan seems to have a degree in accounting.

Season 1 of House is over, so I'm in need of a change. MINE!

Thanks. :)

Why do interviewers keep asking the same damn questions about Rev, knowing that they won't be answered? They could use the time to ask more important questions.

I don't believe that for a second. It sounds to me like you're giving way, way too much weight to the method of input. If people didn't want to play Mario with analog, they ain't gonna wanna do it in gyroscope or with haptic feedback. They just won't. They need the killer content that'll make people say "I must play this game." In the end, it'll be an extremely small number of people who say "I must experience this controller." It might net them a few extra people, but is that going to matter when alternative systems have, for example, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Halo, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, etc...

...I don't think it will. But it's probably a matter of outlook. I feel that Nintendo must come swinging with game content that people want to play, and that the controller will not change people's desire to play it if they weren't wanting to in the first place.

Yes, and they copied Nintendo - AFTER they released the N64. And yet, they still won by far in terms of marketshare. That analog stick, though extremely fundamental to todays games, did not change anything. See the point? The scenario your discussing will happen no matter what if it's fundamental to gaming.

Hahahahahaha. cybamerc, I hope you're just fucking around. Show me where they said the DS was an inspiration for that. If you can't find it, then don't imply it because that has to be the most stupid assertion I've heard since these consoles were unveiled. If they DID say that, it's possibly even more absurd but for a different reason entirely.

good points or not it sorta sounds like your just a little butt hurt that they have not shown it yet.

what's it matter if they show it now anyway? not like you can go buy it in the next few months anyway.

Why are so many people bitching about Nintendo not personally blowing each and every person at the conference, while giving them a portable time-machine so they can project themselves into the future so they can play Revolution titles? Hell...nobody expecting them to even show as much as they did...we got seeming confirmation of the Revolution system name, some details, and a preliminary look at the console casing(which will be smaller and possible sport some other cosmetic changes). The damn system is not due out for over a year...and while the same holds true for Sony, Sony has also been on the market in Japan for a year more than the Gamecube has been out in Japan...hardware wise it's even more long in the tooth...so there was more of a need to drum up excitment for the PS3. Hell, more than likely whatever gameplay innovations Nintendo might have shown off would have been overshadowed by Sony's showing. I'd rather the full details be revealed in a more controlled setting...either a Spaceworld type dealie, or perhaps at TGS.

pwned.

Just to add to this barrage of people telling silver he's wrong, it's my understanding that Arigatou gozaimashita is used particularly in situations where a stranger or an acquaintance that you probably won't see again soon (and don't see on a regular basis) does you some sort of favor (e.g. gives you directions, holds a cab for you, etc.).

I blame Steve Kent. Nintendo reveals both a new GameBoy and a new Console, and people are ho-hum about the press conference. If it wasn't for USA Today spilling the beans the morning before the conference, then people would've been much more impressed wiht what Nitnendo showed off (a console's look IS a pretty big deal, afterall).

USAToday did the same with the DS. It seems that Kent gets the exclusive ahead of the press conferences.

masu= is, the now (example: arimasu, being present now)
masen= is not, negative form of masu (arimasen, not present)
mashita= was, past (arimashita, was present)
masendeshita= was not, negative form of mashita (arimasendeshita, was not present)

(when speaking about objects, that is)

(remember a bit more from Japanese than I thought, and Juices words ring true)

Shigeru Miyamoto: It's a trade show, and being a trade show we want to focus on what we're doing this year, we want attention on this year's business. However, that being said, we can't not say anything. We want to tell a little bit, so we went and looked at the information and said, 'Well, we can tell them this much.' We don't want to give away too much because other companies out there tend to take that information and run with it, of course. And while it was a small amount of info, we thought it was good info and we were pretty happy with what we were able to tell people. While the Revolution is something we're doing next year, it's going to have all the cutting edge technology, it's going to have a lot of power to it. It's not this big monster machine. What we're trying to use that technology for is to make it a machine that is family-friendly, easily accessible by people of all ages and all experiences. Quiet, small, simple... that's where we're trying to take that technology.

this is the source of all the skepticism and doubt about the actual power and output of the system. i have to admit I myself am confused...in the same sentence he mentions how it will have all the cutting edge technology and going to have a lot of power to do it but wont be a monster machine? what does that even mean? 2ndly maybe nintendo didnt show much cause they wanted to see the reaction...i seriously doubt u can make major changes this late in the dev cycle but maybe seeing how negative the reaction was to the supposed 2-3 times more powerful than gamecube statement....they can go back and make some changes.

i applaud nintendo, always do and did, if they wanna try something diff as most people are now multi console owners but at the same time if they wish to redefine gaming and such they need to realize visually, and in terms of the power, the system better be neck to neck with the other two cause that will draw the gamers in at first and then if something is revolutionary they will stick for it. i really hope they get that cause releasing a system...no matter how amazing it is...if graphically at least it isnt up to par no casual or hardcore gamer really is going to consider up to snuff enough to start a new trend of phase of gaming.

i seriously hope what they mean is something in similar to philosophy to the gamecube where as it had more power to it than sony, and less than xbox, it was up to par internally at least with the other 2 while not being a monster machine.

I think this all means that Nintendo is bowing to the alter of "efficiency".

I sure hope its in the ballpark, because Nintendo can't be that crazy as to make multi-platform ports to Revolution un-feasable. Can they?

I think the "big" comment is about the pyshical size. I dunno

Alternatively,

It could mean that the "technology" Miyamoto is refering to is in the interface. I dunno, can't imagine the controllers being marketable above $40 a pop... so perhaps thier is additional tech in the console that is needed to make the new interface work. Thus, a portion of the budget is diverted to the interface scheme.

Certainly I wanted it to be shown. I always think from a competitive standpoint it would have been very good to generate a bit more buzz for your product, especially if it's so far away. But to that end, I'm not "butt hurt." Nintendo always does this, I'm just commenting on the excuse they always give for it ;)

What's your real name? I just want to know in case for some reason I'm ever hiring people for a marketing job, so I can just put your resume into the shredder. :P

Oh! My name is C-H-R-I-S...

...hey, wait a minute!

Well, Kobun, you should tell Nintendo to fire the douchebags currently helping them market the products, 'cause they ain't doin' shit-all to sell their consoles in comparrison to the competition.

But hey! Let's stay on target, they're still getting fat sacks of money. ;P

Y'know...people are talking about Revolution "debut" at the E3 Press conference, curiousity is very high, and speculation abound....yet the XBOX 360's debut on the "MTV" special is all but forgotten about now. I think Nintendo did just fine not showing all their cards at E3.

I wasn't too interested in it when they described it as just doing math, but I think the brain teaser thing could be interesting.

That having a word of the name of a colour written in a different colour is a total bastard.

like whats the colour of this word?

WHITE

Say that out loud and then do 5 of them in a row to prove yourself stupid.

Fuck Nintendo.

Fuck Shigeru Miyamoto.

Fuck the Revolution.

Bring on teh mature.

Bring on the Drinky.

Bring on the console of the future, with the controller of the future.

Featuring 100 buttons all of which have 1,000,000 points of pressure sensitivity.

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-by
And the parting on the left
Is now a parting on the right
And their beards have all grown longer overnight

export the video to an image sequence using Quicktime Pro, import the frames to Image Ready and then crop and tweak.

I suspect what Miyamoto means is that the system will be comparable, but it won't be dripping with power-- NCL essentially wants to further their philosophy on the GC. The GC does not feature standout pieces of hardware. The GPU is not as fast and as flexible as the Xbox's, and Gekko was not in the same league as the competing CPUs. In the end, though, the combination of solid components made the machine competitive.

I expect the same thing out of Revolution at this point, especially since I think the CPUs powering the other console might have too much juice in a certain sense. ATi has already admitted that Nintendo spent roughly the same amount of cash as MS did on their GPU, so I don't expect them to be behind there. I do suspect that they took it easy on the CPU side of things and spent more money on developing the interface and/or things like a more sophisticated cooling system to make a system that small possible.
