New multiplayer Marvel game, possibly exclusive to PS5 in the works

Yea all the people who you know dont play Playstation, always say this on youtube. Like "they are turning Insomniac into a Marvel factory". I'm like SOny doesn't force anyone to make something they dont want to work on. They literally went to Insomniac and asked if they would like to work on another character and I guess Wolverine was thrown around pre-miles morales. Like when they were making spiderman 2018 they all were thinking about what other characters they would like to do.

I mean a lot of people that work at game studios love comics/animated films because those are all kind of part of the medium. Like everyone keeps saying they need to work on a new IP. I'm like why? They made tons of IP's that were great that no one bought? I mean Insomniac once they get bored or have an amazing concept for a new game can go make it whenever they want.

I think at this point Insomniac has become the new Naighty Dog/ where they can make what ever they want and Sony will fund it without hesitation.

I do like that Sony is organically making multiplayer games or Multiplayer optional add ons to existing games. They have tried so many times to make a new shooter, or online game and failed. I think they understand now that incorporating something organically that makes sense in terms of gameplay to the single player experience is the way to go for them.

I mean let's face it. There is a serious demand to be filled for Marvel games right now. Gaming has failed to keep in step with the IP's popularity and success of the films. I remember when you got a new game for every movie (like Spiderman games back on PS2). Now you just get an over-late and over-confident bad Avengers title. Even if it was good, it didn't even arrive until long after all the dust settled from the box office.

Marvel is no joke. This is a big deal and BIG money. If you had something that critical, that was already botched, you would look at who is most qualified and experienced to do this. That answer is Insomniac. I want new IP as well, but there is already big thriving demand for good ass Marvel games (including from me). Let them make bank filling that need, ensuring they have plenty of money for their own stuff in the future. To take some risks.

Nintendo went back to Retro to sort out Metroid. The difference is that Nintendo didn't insist on seeing their bad game to completion before making this call. Of course we don't even know what this really is yet though! And may not even be Avengers. Just saying I wouldn't mind it. The fact that CD/Square made a bad game didn't weaken my desire for a good one.

I like the sound of that, sony need more mp games anyway.

Opportunity cost and reality of games designed to work as services vs say getting SM64 or Galaxy and then wanting more of that.
,Even without taking about the F2P side of things, games designed to be live services are not that: they tend to be a more bare bone version of the full concept slowing the studio making it to cut their losses sooner if the game does not pick enough customers up and you produce only content there is demand for (and analytics) and you charge people for each season (maybe) on top too.

What great multiplayer game released in the last 10 years would be better had they shipped it "complete" and then walked away? I count zero, but maybe I'm wrong.

Developer: "I have this crazy idea that just might go over big with gamers. Can we try it out?"

AAA single player game publishers: "We're not giving you 150 million dollars because you have a hunch. Stick to the formula. Stick to what works.

GAAS publisher: "Sure, get the proof of concept out to gamers for 30 million. If it hits, we'll give you 500 million over the next X number of years to fully flesh everything out.

Live service incentiveses risk and creativity. It's why we've seen the bulk of industry innovation from multiplayer over the last decade.

Insomniac seems to be getting tied to Marvel for the long run. This can affect quality and creativity.
Said of a studio used to do yearly R&C games fow two whole generations. So much creativity!
Now I miss the days when they decided to pursue quality and creativity with new teams capable of outstanding achievements like Fuse, Feral Rites, Bad Dinos, Fruit Fusion, Slow Down Bull, Digit and Dash...
What a time to be concerned about studio's health!

If it gets the Sony treat it'll turn out good. Not worried at all, and this could be X-Men 1vs1 game to later go to that eSport even Sony acquired, Evo?

They've already got the Firewalk and Deviation games, plus one of the Firesprite titles, plus Factions, plus strong rumours about Guerrilla making a MP game.

Would they really need a 6th?? I'd say 5 is already too many tbh.

Marvel is a large enough universe that any type of game can be made using their characters.

No way, no how is it possible that having to use the world of Marvel is going to stifle creativity.

If anything it will force the devs to be more creative.

X-men?! the fantastic four?! Secret defenders?! I would of mentioned midnight sons but someone else is doing that. quite the few possibilities!

Again, who is saying proof of concept at full price and content drip fed through either a subscription or microtransactions or shipping it complete and walking away?

The same way Netflix and video streaming services incentivise risks in big bold full length movies over padded episode filled series (with as much filler per episode as they can bear) right?

GAAS lowers the risk for devs and publisher, it is about business over user value (once paid content goes beyond simple large add-ins and into microtransactions the balance of engagement vs enjoyment shifts even further). You also stopped listening to the conversation between dev and publisher early. Let me continue it for you:

GAAS publisher: "Then again if you made these small specific suggested changes, do not worry your pretty little heads about them we promise they are the slightest of nods to tried and true safer formula that works, it could cost less and we can squeeze even more money from players if we get the hooked well enough… how do you plan to progressively get more and more money out of whales and other players alike btw? We feel you are aiming too low, not enough incentive to spend and reward you for such a great concept!"
Developer: 😩
