new Nintendo DS units blocks PassMe devices (homebrew stuff)

Nintendo is taking a page from Sony it seems :P

News: Nintendo blocks use of PassMe devices!

Planning to buy a new Nintendo DS to play homebrew on? Think again.
In a surprising move from Nintendo, it's been discovered that latest production models of the Nintendo DS have been modified... to block use of any PassMe device (and variations of).

The latest models of the Nintendo DS - the new Red colour edition and China only iQue DS, have been reported to not work with PassMe.

Whether or not latest batches of all the other DS variations have been "fixed" is unknown, as there have been no reports of compatibility issues beyond the two afore mentioned models. But it seems highly likely that Nintendo will update all future batches.

Technical details are not available yet, so whether this fix was a physical hardware update or a simple firmware update is currently unknown. But it's only a matter of time before someone figures it out...

... And cracks it.

BAh, why do Sony and Nintendo both keep trying to screw homebrew developers? I really don't have any vested interest in homebrew development but I really don't see how it hurts their bottom line or anything. I'm sure most homebrew developers are courteous enough not to pirate content.

surprising indeed, some posters at gbadev said that Nintendo is very friendly at the homebrew dev. scene.

yeah, this seems like the first time Nintendo has done something proactive to curb portable homebrew

Because it's not just about homebrew. The methods used to run homebrew result in the ability to pirate. And don't say a lot of people don't pirate..

Piracy. Full stop.

Although Homebrew is nice, it usually does lead to piracy.

I am also surprised that Nintendo did this, but its a good move on there sad. Shame for people who want to use this for legal purposes though.

I wonder if a GBA program can overwrite the DS bios. Unlikely.

This is a shame, but it won't last for long, I think.

This looks like a good thread for me to ask about DS homebrew.

I don't own a DS, so really I know nothing about the homebrew scene. How exactly does it work on DS? How far along is the homebrew stuff? Are there good dev tools out there for the homebrew developers? Can anyone provide me with info?

This is not a big deal. It is incredibly simple to re-write the firmware on the DS, and by writing new firmware to your DS you can use developers' GBA carts to run homebrew.

Future versions of the DS might make it so that you have to take your DS apart to flash new firmware, or maybe make it impossible, but that might mess up their manufacturing process, so I doubt they'll do that.

...

But don't you use a PassMe to boot a DS executable from a GBA cart to flash the firmware?

I've heard that nintendo will announce a price drop for the DS at the Game Convention in Leipzig. >> 99eur (instead of 149) for the PSP release ...

to be confirmed.

The DS is just out for 6 months in Europe. They can't drop it to 99 euro's that quick. Perhaps bringing the SM64DS bundle over here, or new colors. But 99 euro's? :x

That's what I think too, but this information seems to be communicated to all major French and Belgian shops...

Very strange...

Probably they drop the price because they have no games to conter the PSP release.

The UK collection of titles is one of the saddest sites you'll ever see in GAME, HMV ect. It's frankly, pathetic... thank god for import stores / internet.

Well DS homebrew hit the ground running thanks to the reasonably healthy GBA homebrew scene.

They basically learned of a way to get at the full DS hardware from the GBA port initially. Eventually PassMe was born... a hardware solution to make it easy. You need a working valid DS cart and a GBA flash cart for this. Later, they've put together WiFi Me. This is a solution which allows you to boot unsigned code simply by using a PC with a compatible wireless adaptor. Some clever soul has custom written a driver for a certain wireless chipset that means some (not many) products will be able to communicate with the DS wirelessly. So providing you have the right equipment all you have to do is prepare whatever you want to send to your DS on the PC, and then go to the "DS download play" option in the DS' main menu. In both instances, I believe you're limited in terms of what size apps you can boot. This might be holding things back somewhat compared to the holes and opportunities that the PSPs memory stick access provides... I imagine though that an actual hardware mod is in the works, or that they'll crack this problem soon.

I also have a feeling that when Nintendo launch their online service it will give the homebrew community the clues they need to send data to the DS from ANY wireless adaptor or router. Which would be incredible.

A lot of the initial efforts were to get unsigned code to boot on Nintendo DS, via GBA flash carts. There's quite a decent amount of stuff going on, including emulators etc. They've got high quality MP3s playing on it - it's limited as yet, but no doubt it'll turn into something great. There's other players as indicated below - List courtesy of DCemu:

Emulators: Chip 8, Celecovision, Gameking, GB emu, MSX, Neogeo Pocket, NES, ScummVM, SNES, Wonderswan..

True. Thank god I didn't wait for Meteos.

I do think they've been holding back in light of the impending PSP launch though... September will see Zoo Tycoon, Castlevania, Megaman, Meteos, Advance Wars and Madden 2006 released for DS. Then it ramps up towards Metroid, Nintendogs, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing at the latter end of the year.

I noticed Animaniacs: Lights, Camera, Action came out for DS recently. ÂŁ15! Not that I'm going to buy it or anything, but the price is right for kids.

I don't see how this is surprising anyone. AFAIK, Nintendo has revised the GBA a number of times to lockout unauthorized devices.

GameSharks designed for the "regular" GBA don't even work on the GBA SP.

Basically, if you pick up a flashcart or a cheat device, you should make sure that your GameBoy is older than that device.

The difference is that (with the updatable firmware) Sony is announcing it every time they make a modification, and giving a name to the modification, and telling you to turn all your "old version" devices into "new version" devices, while trying to explain to you how locking out piracy is "better" for you.

Price drops after half a year aren't that uncommon. Also for a price drop it would make sense for it to happen around the world at about the same time, and September would be 9+ months for the US and Japan. It's possible.

Heh, that's exactly the sort of thing I was hoping they'd do. When is this Game Convention?

A DS pricedrop to $99, 10000 Yen or 99 euros this month would be great to, respectively, give the system some steam in NA, pull ahead in Japan and slowdown the PSP launch in Europe. Nintendo historically has dropped prices around this time of year (GC, GBASP). A DS pricedrop might be a good indicator for an SP price drop (sales have slowed in Japan considerably) and a low price point for the Micro right out the gate, which launches next month.

Let‘s Nintendo's smart enough.

Maybe a pricedrop in NA and EU wouldn't hurt but to do it in Japan seems rather unnecessary. It has been outselling the PSP constantly and with JSS I don't see it slowing down.

noooooo!! I just bought a Red Nintendo DS to replace my stolen Silver one, and was planning to buy a passme/flash cart next week. Nooooo!!!

UPDATE

The old version of passme does not work with the IQueDS and Red NDS. A new version of passme have already been developed and tested for it to work, so it will be out soon. If you don't want to use PassMe, then WiFiMe and Flashme will still work.

Looks like the PassMe king Natrium42 confirms this and it looks like Loopy already has a working PassMe for these new DS revisions :

CURRENT PassMe (I SELL) DOES NOT work with Ique DS and NEW Red DS! If you own either of these, don't bother buying one untill I have a new version available. Loopy (who rocks) has a working version of PassMe for the iQue DS and is working out the kinks. I will update if it works with the Red DS when it has been confirmed.

I check the other forums and it seems Loopy got it to work(He owns a Red DS).

But anyway, all we have to do is wait 15 minutes for someone to make a workaround and we'll back in homebrew heaven (and it looks like we don't even have to wait that long!)
