I am not sure how long this has been out, but the demos this month have floored me. First off, I have to say that Republic Commando is fucking awesome. One of my Halo 2 clanmates told me he played an earlier demo that sucked and so he didn't care about this new one, but boy is he going to hear about the one I played today. The sounds are unbelievable. I mean I'm in these firefights with droids of all different sorts and shit is just blowing up and all over the place. Droids are getting limbs and heads blown off with nice bursts of electric buzzing, grenades are exploding and shaking the room, and my squadmates are screaming about what is happening at their location. Its awesome. The environment wasn't as polished as say Halo 2, but goddamn it was just fun. This music starts kicking in when the action gets out of control and it adds a sense of urgency to the situation like I haven't seen in but a handful of games, ever. I think I'm going to have to go pre-order this sonuvabitch cuz if the full version only gets better, we're in for a treat.
Iron Pheonix also has me pretty excited. The demo is missing a lot of stuff from the final version from what I've heard, but the idea of 8 on 8 fighting is pretty cool and its executed in such a way that it really feels similar to Dynasty Warriors if all the players were controlled by real people. Its one of those things you'll just have to try to fully understand. I hopped on LIVE with it and really had a blast playing a 5 on 5 game. We were running up walls, throwing eachother off buildings, using super-moves left and right, etc. It was really a unique experience in the way that you couldn't just dominate all 5 people on the opposing team. You really need your teammates and a good understanding of how the weapons work. Again, I think I have to buy this one when it hits. I imagine my Halo 2 clan just wailing on eachother into the wee hours of the night.
Greg Hasting's Tournament Paintball. Play it. If you are a real paintball player, you'll probably have a greater appreciation for this than the average gamer who is used to Halo or TimeSplitters. Its very different, but in a good way. I've had the full version for a while and love it. I've been telling my friends its really awesome, but nobody cared because Ghost Recon 2 and Halo 2 are out there begging to be played. So now that they've played the demo, they all want it.
Never mind that I've been telling them to get it for months now.
Videos for Area 51 and Brothers in Arms both looked great too. Something about BIA made it look like it might almost be too real for me to want to play though. For example, as much as Saving Private Ryan is a fantastic movie and one of the best cinema experiences out there, its not something I want to watch every day and really get into. I think BIA might fall into that category too. Could really be something special when you're in the right mood for it, but you'll need an extra dose or two of something stupid like Family Guy to bring you out of the depression you fall in from playing it.
Overall I gotta say this was an awesome month for OXM's demos. I don't usually read that mag cuz I think its pretty lousy overall, but this month rocked. Hard.
