New PSP Media Manager

Stinkles

Clothed, sober, cooperative
Just got this press release. Doesn't look like it does anything new, but it seems sort of pretty.

But it looks bad when it starts out with the line: "Everything you need to turn your PSP into a MP3 music player, digital photo album, movie player and more."

Dur.

This program's interface certainly looks good.

I'd love to see an E-book reader for the PSP at some point, also.

I still can't believe that Sony hasn't released something that will make it easier for us to rip DVDs into files that can be watched on the PSP. Sure - I'm certain that Sony wants to protect the UMD, etc., but, if it were easier to copy movies and watch them on the PSP - I can't see how that would be a bad thing.....

Yes, that would come in handy, too.

While we're wishing here, a version of AvantGo for PSP would also be nice.

True.

Getting back on the topic, I'm surprised Sony hasn't released something that facilitates file transfers to and from the PSP in general. I know they've got their own Image Converter 2 program, but from many reports I've heard it isn't worth the $19.99 price. This Media Boss program looks like it does a lot more for less money, but my current PC is too slow for the minimum requirements, so I won't be able to try it anytime soon.

Sony's SonicStage software is free and actually works well for music transfers to the PSP, especially if you've got firmware version 2.00 which finally supports DRM-encoded ATRAC3 files on a Memory Stick Pro Duo. Still, Sony should be giving some media manager for free, which could promote use of the PSP for multimedia applications. It's reasonable to think that the availability of iTunes for free helped spur at least a few iPod sales; a similar application from Sony could also be used to leverage additional PSP sales.

It's illegal to rip commercial DVD's, you know?

Oh - good point. But, of course, Sony made VCRs for years (right?) and people made illegal copies of movies and tv shows on VCRs all the time.

Of course, I have stopped expecting companies to be consistent about things like this.
