New PSP TV commercials

Thanks, neo. You're the best poster here.

Those commercials are terrible and "Ridge Racersszzzz" looks terrible in motion.

I like these a hell of a lot more than the last set, but that's not saying much. I liked how the last one really showed off the screen, and second one did a nice job of showing off the superb sound system... well somewhat. But it's too bad that could have been suited for a Lumines commercial or something. :( Lumines gets no love to the public. :(

The commercials are cool. I don't think anyone has posted the release date commercial with Inoki going ICHI, NI, ICHI, NI, ICHI, NI!

As for Jonnyram's link - thanks! I saw it on Mizuguchi's blog, but it is a giant among men who spreads the gospel.

I am sure I speak for everyone on Japan who has played it and preordered it that there is less than 2 weeks til I have Lumines. WOOOOOOOHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOO! I am in love with everything about this game.

BTW: Isnt Shinichi Osawa (Mondo Grosso) Eri Nobuchika's producer? I passed up the chance to see Mondo Grosso 2 weeks ago, but I am going to get my copy of Lumines signed in Jan when he plays Osaka. The vinyl of the Eri song they are using in the game, "Lights", has been sold out since early november when it was released. Hopefully I can track down a copy.

Wait, the PSP only accepts custom-made headphones? That's a rip-off...
No, it accepts other headphones. This one is a headphone with a built in remote jack. Like a NetMD remote so you can control "play, pause, volume" all on the loop.

Anyone notice the "Rally-X" tile in the ridge racers ad? and there was that one screenshot in another thread where the road looked pale enough to be dirt/gravel, but I dared not suggest the idea for fear of it being old news...

Lumines looks great - a good soundtrack is still one of the most important parts of a game for me. Will the game just have Mondo Grosso and Eri Nobuchika or will it have a variety of artists?

Eh, RR is the only good looking title so far. I'll be picking that up at launch. But I feel the DS will offer a better golfing game in the future than Minna.

the kids saying PSP is really annoying. The PS one was cool but the PSP makes me want to punch a wall.

edit: this should go under that "commercial you hate thread" for ads with annoying crap that should never have made it on tv in the first place.

Does that surprise you? Every other feature of the PSP is a bullshit proprietary Sony standard.

I mean, I love the unit, but it's basically a vehicle to sell a bunch of other overpriced Sony products.

dunno, i remember amir0x and mumu fighting over it in another thread though. Something to do with scrabble

Haha. From what I gather, it's basically like a fast paced Japanese game that's somewhat like Scrabble, but there's also other little mini-games you can play and other things which spruce up the gameplay considerable.

It has, like, no chance of coming to the USA though :P

Such as?

Whoa whoa whoa, you have to use proprietary headphones? That's worse than Nintendo not including a headphone jack, seriously. You just know it was a marketing decision, so Sony could get a whole iPod-white headphone thing going on. "Hey, that metrosexual has a PSP! I can tell; the headphones are proprietary!"

Jesus, two people already pointed out that you can use regular headphones. Do you people even read the threads you're replying to?

This isnt clear but I am thinking it will be mostly Mondo Grosso/Eri Nobuchika stuff. Shinichi Osawa is credited as music producer for Lumines. I got further than most in the TGS demo once I figured out the combo system and all the songs I heard were Mondo Grosso.

As pointed out, headphone jack supports standard headphone plugs as well. Might as well repeat it since people are ignoring where its been pointed out earlier.

Out of curiosity, what would you have used instead of UMD? And bear in mind, pre-recorded game media might as well be proprietary regardless of whether its burned on some industry standard physical media or not.

Wifi is 100% industry standard. So is USB 2.0, and the IRDA port.

As for MemStick, there's no standard to the flash media market and you need not buy a Sony branded one, since you can also purchase from Sandisk or Lexmark at less cost with no noticeable sacrifice in quality, so it isn't exactly the ideal "vehicle to sell a bunch of other overpriced Sony products" as you claim.

There's no good reason for yet another optical media standard. Mini DVD has just .3GB less capacity and is only slightly larger than the UMD disc. And even if Sony thinks the current Mini DVD standard has some unspecified shortcoming, they could work with the standards body to develop a refinement -- but, as per usual, they choose to strike out on their own with a proprietary standard with no support from anyone not owned by Sony.

As far as the Memory Stick, Sony earns a royalty on every MS sold, regardless of whether they or one of their licensees makes it.

Then you have all the back and forth over whether it will support MP3 audio or just Sony Atrac. And there is still no confirmation of support for any standard video codecs.

How much bigger is the Mini DVD compared to UMD? I'm not sure I'd like PSP to be any bigger than it is, just for the sake of using something standard.

DVD consortium members make money off every DVD license sold. Does that mean it should bother me? I mean, why should I, as an end user, care how much anyone makes off the licenses? The PSP is damn cheap, memory sticks can be bought for a reasonable price from Sandisk, and that's all I really care about as far as those prices go.

It plays MP3s, and it plays videos that you put on it (your 'home' videos, not just UMD licensed and DRM-ed stuff). It (of course) supports any headphones.

Rhindle, to what purpose would you have reduced disk capacity and forced a larger design on a device meant to be portable? Just to be able to say its "industry standard"? I doubt that if Sony used mini-DVDs instead of UMDs that any other factor of how they're being used would have changed. Sony still wouldn't allow recordable/rewritable versions to be recognized, it'd only accept discs prerecorded specifically for the PSP only. Movies on Mini-DVD? You'd still run into two problems - you need a device that accepts mini-DVDs and decodes MPEG4 AVC (right now, only PCs) and you'd still have the biggest complaint leveled against movies on UMD - that people don't want to buy movies twice. And we've got no guarantee yet that PSP movies will support anything higher than PSP resolution, so why would you necessarily want to play that away from the PSP?

Either way, you'd be bitching about Sony striking out with their own "standards" because who else is putting MPEG4 AVC content on Mini-DVDs right now?

they could work with the standards body to develop a refinement
Surest way to mire launch of the PSP in bureaucratic limbo. Why expect Sony to do this with the PSP more than any other console/handheld manufacturer before? Every game console and handheld before this has used bits of industry standard here and bits of proprietary design there such that the complete package is essentially proprietary.

Edit:

And there is still no confirmation of support for any standard video codecs.
MPEG4 AVC. Been confirmed since the initial announcement and has only been reinforced since then. Industry standard like the MP3, USB 2.0 and 802.11b support.

I love the one where the teacher looks over the students shoulder... they both jump at the end... AWESOME...

Ridege Racer looks incredible... how could you buy a Nintendo DS knowing this is on the way...

I might buy it just for the Y's game... it probably plays smoother on PSP over the PS2...

Yeah the graphics are what you need for capturing the mainstream. It is the perfect strategy.

I would take better graphics over fun gameplay any day...

So basically, if Nintendo DS has a great playing football game with terrible graphics... and the PSP has a football game with incredible 128 bit graphics and semi-decent gameplay...

I, being a graphics whore, would select PSP any day...

You honestly don't think graphics are at all a selling point? I'd say you're out of touch with reality. The first impression these things will make are the look of the system, and it's graphics.
