the words "combat" and "shooter" should not even be in this thread. at all.

first person is a perspective nothing more. what if you play as a politician and the game is about speaking and controlling this? that'd be a nice change of pace.

Sorry but that podcast info makes little sense.

South american base.
- 4 known species of ant controlling fungi were found in Brazil. Ok.

Their experiment infectated vegetation and the ants.
- If the video of the fungi is to be considered, this makes no sense, since the fungis are especialized.

Angry ants towards man.
- Eh?

The infection kills some and others become zombies
- Huh?

So the only thing it would had to do with cordyceps, is that they were studying it for military purposes and that generated something totally different from a fungi, et the same thing affects vegetation and arthropodes and humans?
Yet if the newspaper in U3 is to be taken serious, it mentions killer fungi?
Eh.

Sounds like pure speculation for hits.

In all fairness, they do mention locations like New Mexico and Texas which would be new.
But they are uncertain about the view point of gameplay nor mention the developer for such a scoop?

so 3 people, 4 with me lost interest when heard that it is FPS, ha I thought I was the only one. Don't like FPS in general. never connect with the characters in the game, especially with the one you play as.

Yawn, what else is at VGA, this one goes under the rug

You didn't play Amnesia, right?.... smh.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
The comment about it being first person indicates there will not be a whole lot of shooting, if any at all. I like this.

???

That seems like quite a leap to make (and unlikely, given industry trends) unless I'm missing something...

The auto-translation is pretty much truth to the original. They basically say:

- Set in a near future
- Ants infection people. Some die. Some become zombie.
- Infection hits central america first, like texas and new mexico and then, after a hotbed in UK, they propragate to the rest of US (not sure I understand the dynamic here). US President declares allert status.
- Non-authorized experiments conducted in secret installations in south america are the cause of an infestation that hit vegetation first, and then ants.
- Infected ants are aggressive. See man as a menace.
- First person view

Disclaimer: I was not involved with the article at all :D

Does this sound completely underwhelming to anyone else? Given everything we've seen?

I didn't realise the perspective of a game was such a big deal to people o_O

I can understand the negative reactions but I'm intrigued. This won't just be a run & run shoot 'em up. Or at least it shouldn't be! I think there's opportunity for some evolution. Although I'm not seeing how a Move implementation would really fit (having never played any FPS with Move).

Still, we're guessing and the sourcing isn't filling me with a huge amount of confidence in its accuracy. I'm gonna wait and see.

For those needing an explanation for my fps hate:

Can't stand the idea that my entire body/upperbody needs to move when I am looking around.

Narrow peripheral view.

Limited movement options.

Sorry, that info is likely fake..I hope.. The article claims this is a grab from the trailer

http://www.4news.it/images/stories/games/sony/TheLastOfUs/20111208/the-last-of-us_pic002.jpg

I'm not aware of any major game reveal trailer that would knowingly use font that terrible, if they're claiming THAT is a grab from the trailer, then the entire article is confirmed fake. Sony would never use font that horribad in a reveal trailer...then again...

and here's the quote claiming thats a grab from the trailer

If you're questioning the authenticity of the article based on the font then I won't support you. But if they're claiming the picture is from the trailer, then it's a little suspect.

I don't know why it would sound underwhelming. It just sounds like someone has read all the info and theories and decided to write a story about it. The only thing really "new" in there is the claim that it's in first person.

This is not the first time Naughty Dog is doing this, back in the Crash Bandicoot day Naughty Dog were very close with Insomniac Games and because of that there was a secret Spyro The Dragon demo on the same Crash 3 disc.

This has nothing to do with Naughty Dog if you ask me, so the clear answer is SSM.

If it's like Skyrim/Mirror's Edge ok. But if it's a shooter oh god I hope it's good cause I hate shooters more than anything ugh

One thing is puzzling me. If this is a brand new IP, why would it be so shocking and mind blowing? I mean it's new. Unless there is something else there.

It's based on the font and based on the fact I just can't see that picture as a grab from any kind of trailer, it honestly just looks like a photoshop job to me.

The very fact those articles are claiming that's a grab from the trailer is very, VERY Suspect.

just tossing this idea.

in Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3 Bungie is listed in the "Special thanks" part of the credits along side other sony studios. Maybe they where working on something... exchanging notes?

Always seemed a bit weird but its probably just that they are friends or something

edit actually watching the u2 and u3 credits now. the only non sony studios listed are Bungie and Infinity ward.... and IW isnt thanked in Uncharted 3... Respawn is lol.

I hope this info is fake and again if we pat attention to that latest teaser, that doesn't sound like a zombie but something else, monster or what ever.
If it is true as they describe it, sounds like the most unoriginal crap I read in a while.

Although since I understand Italian, they say at the end "it should PROBABLY be FPS...." So they are not sure? Then why are they talking about it?

Hope it's fake, crappy site.

maybe it's just a big, hugely ambitious title from a studio that is super talented but doesn't normally make these kinds of games.

"The view should be in first person, just to bring more intensity and emotion to the gameplay."

The problem is that devs just don't know how to make gameplay that isn't combat. It's either shooting or melee. Or both.

And that is all there is. There are no big budget "adventure" games, or really any genre, that doesn't fall back on combat for the majority of gameplay.

Mirror's Edge was one of the few exceptions, but failed at retail. No one is going down that road. Everything is moving toward more and more action.

There's just nothing you can point to in the industry and say "Ok this is how you do survival in a game" or "this is how you do fear in a game" without some kind of combat as a central gameplay mechanic.

Not saying it can't be done... just pointing out you're making quite a leap. Considering there's no precedent.

I will never understand people's distaste for camera angles.
Umm movement? Dodge rolls, climbing and platforming, peering around without losing sight of what's on either side of your vision etc. I feel more like I'm in the world in third person because the peripheral view is closer to my own than fps's tunnel vision.

But yes, if a dev can replicate my idea of a first person view for change, then I'm all for it. But if this is going to be industry standard, no thanks.

Also, in Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando's start screen, Ratchet was playing Jak and Daxter and Jak 2 on his TV. And in Haven City in Jak 2, there was a billboard with a picture of Ratchet and Clank on it. It always amused me because those were my two favorite series at the time.

I'm also still pretty sure that it's a Santa Monica game. They're the only studio that could warrant this much hype and have also had enough downtime to be able to have something ready to show. And the SSM and ND guys work right across the street from each other and often collaborate on stuff.

I wouldn't give much credit to that info to be honest. A lot of stuff just doesn't make sense.

And yeah, they say "probably" first person. Sorry.
just write what you know, don't be so enigmatic. we know that you know something.

btw yeah, ants + first person sounds like shit.

Sonds like something similar Resistance 4. Substitute zombies for aliens and modern military for WWII era. I hope I'm wrong.

People shouldn't be so quick to believe that site. They aren't really saying anything new. They're also taking the ant connection literally even though what we've seen so far suggests that this is more of a fungus spread and not anything connected to ants.

If you believe a game about zombies won't have combat in it, then I've got this fancy new bridge I'd like to sell you

There is a precedent. Clock Tower. Had very little combat, and worked out the concept of fear in a great way. You have to escape the scissorman. You can't fight or defeat him, and you also have to watch out for stage hazards. There's no combat system, just you trying to escape the place alive. Also, worth noting, that game still gives me nightmares to this day.

Another game that does survival in a pretty decent way without combat is Catherine, although that's a very different type of fear, obviously. You have the fear of dying, and the fear of your wife finding you're cheating on her.

The audio in the ant video doesn't sound like a shooter at all. More like a first person adventure/survival horror.

I'm just gonna freeze myself til saturday night.

Wake up and bask in the glory that all my assumptions were correct and that Sony Santa Monica made the survival horror/thriller I always wished for after Silent Hill 1.

Maybe third person is more ideal for a game that features "dodge rolls" and a lot of platforming, but there are plenty of other things that can be in video games.

So I guess people are really hooked on the idea of Sony Santa Monica being the devs. Were they really working on this and GoW4 at the same time? :3
