new system with SATA drive help

I'm building a computer right now(1st one in many years). I have a SATA harddrive that I'm doing a fresh install on. How do I get the computer to recognize the SATA drive. When do I use the SATA driver disk? XP setup will boot from disk, but then it wont recognize any mass storage device. There is an option to press f6 to install a SCSI or raid. When I try that, i get a wierd message about my D: drive.

Also, since the DVD drive is the only drive on the IDE cable, should i have the jumper on the DVD drive at master?

Sorry about all the newb questions.

It's the F6 part. You should have a 1.44 floppy with the SATA drivers which you can tell Windows XP install to look for.

ok, I tried that, and the driver shows up in a list, I choose the XP driver, then I get an "File \WinXP\fasttx2k.sys caused an unxpected error 4096 at line 2113 in d:\xosortm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c."

If you're lucky enough to have a recent mobo, You won't need to do anything out of the ordinary.

My Intel865PERL let me install Win 2000 on the WD SATA drive without a problem.

That error sounds more like a RAM problem than anything else. Do a google search and see if I'm right.

hmmm, I have a dual channel mobo, but am using only one stick of mushkin 2-3-3 ram.
does it matter which slot i put the ram in for now? Is it okay to put it in the master slot?

There is one slot that it usually must go into. With dual channels, you must be precise. Consult your mobo manual.

Did u change the directory format in which the drivers came? It's looking for the drivers in it's default location and they arent there. What board/sata chipset? U using the latest drivers?

The driver is a Promise fasttrak driver. Are you sure you have set your BIOS to run the correct SATA? You usually can choose between SATA and SATA-RAID configurations in BIOS, and the drivers are different as well.

Im using a soltek board, nforce 2 ultra. When i put the driver disk in another computer, it couldnt read the disk, so i made a new driver disk and windows setup was able to read it. I still actually had to Windows Setup went fine, then it froze up for a long time while install start menu items. I rebooted, and the bios doesnt even detect the disk again. Everything was Like it was before. It seems like the bios isnt saving the information or something. thanks for the help everyone, its appreciated

Are u sure your using the correct drivers for the SATA mode u chose in the bios. SATA BASE/SATA RAID. Make sure SCSI is first in the boot sequence.

Okay, Im going to try everything from scratch.

1. When I clear the cmos, and memory on the motherboard, should I then...

immediately set SCSI as first in the boot sequence,
then move on to the prompt that the bios brings up to enter FastTrack setup?

then use the driver disk when prompted during windows xp setup?

Is that the correct order?

also, im using an AMD 2500+ athlon mobile, it shows up at running 1200 mhz and ram at 200mhz( I'm using pc3200). This is before I change the fsb, or mulltipliers. Is that fine for now, while installing things. Or is that a sign that something else may be wrong? And the cpu jumper for my cpu should be 100/133 right?

EDIT: setting my boot sequence to SCSI and setting up the sata setup brough me back to my previeous point in windows xp installation.

I go into the array settup, and set it to automatic, it found my one drive and set it as stripe 1.

btw, thanks rc for the help.

I'm just hoping windows gets through the whole install this time.

No problem, be sure to read all the sticky posts cause they have most of the often sought info in them. I almost ripped my hair out when setting up my pc when i went Socket 939. Turned out i wasnt suppose to take the drivers out of their directories as they came in the zip. :lol I felt like quite the fool afterwards because in the error it told me it was looking for drivers inside a \WinXP\ directory which didnt exist on the floppy because i hadnt copied them over as they were in the zip.
