Nixon sabotaged the talks so that he could get elected, and Johnson knew and was informed it was treasonous. Johnson declined to go public as it would reveal that they were tapping the talks, and instead passed the info to Humphrey to do with as he wished. Humphrey thought he was going to win anyway and didn't want to go public if he didn't have to as it would be massively disruptive to the public if it was revealed that one party was committing treason.

Nixon got the talks applied be promising the Vietnamese and French a better peace deal if elected, but if course went on to expand the war.

Crazy. Can you imagine a current party holding back that news 2 days before an election? Also, this is way worse than Watergate, Nixon really was a monster.

What's crazy is, if you asked me to vote for Nixon or any modern day plausible GOP candidate for president. I might chose Nixon.

Nixon was the worst president. I honestly don't really care about Watergate nearly as much as I care about him essentially being spineless about cancelling the Apollo program prematurely and choosing the space shuttle over the Mars program (which in the end probably would have wound up costing about the same).

Nixon was a crook, but Reagan implemented a conservative fiscal and social policy that's completely eviscerated the middle class and funneled untold billions of dollars up to the wealthiest. It also gave us the evangelical voter movement that led to the modern Tea Party and all the wackiness that comes with it.

The irony is that Reagan would be considered too liberal by modern GOP standards, but they treat him as if he were Republican Jesus.

So not really treason, but a violation of the Logan Act - of which Wiki tells me there has been 1 indictment in US history.

All the same Nixon was a class A trout. I hope he was nice to his dog.

I'd say promising the enemy a better deal if only they would walk away form negotiations with the current government is borderline treason. Think of how many lives could have been saved if they had indeed brokered peace.

Whatever you feel Reagan did, Nixon's crimes were far worse. Reagan is the demon of the day here, so I'll be shouted down. I encourage you to seek out the primary sources and then try to understand the impact a president and his vice-president resigning in disgrace had upon the country.

Reagan struck a deal with Iran to hold off until he got re-elected to make Carter look worse.

Reagan oversaw regime changes in mulstipls Central American countries, and funneled weapons to African factions who were opposed to marxist communist factions.
G.H.W Bush used to be head of CIA, Bushy later silenced former partner Noriega. They did bussiness together, sold weapons but now Noriega was blabbering his mouth.

This isn't the Taliban, by the way, it's the mujahideen from the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The Taliban did not come until later when Pakistan and US business interests started funding/supporting them to get a foot in the door following the collapse of the Marxist government, hoping to be able to get influence over a friendly Afghanistan for gas pipelines through privatized Central Asia (for the business interests) and military interests (for Pakistan).

That said, the funding of the mujahideen did flood Afghanistan with weapons, money, and international jihadis that led to the formation of the modern Islamist militant movement from which the Taliban and Al-Qaeda sprung.

I don't know but I think that the war on drugs which nixon started still has a negative impact on today, even moreso than trickle down economics.

They killed people, including americans, to win an election. The Bush family did it for corporate interests. Regan sold out most of the population.

There have been some pretty terrible people in that job.

It might also mention that his first speech after winning the Republican nomination in the 1980 campaign was in Philadelphia, Mississippi and that speech was about "states rights." That town (of less then ten thousand!!) was the site of one of the most horrific and well publicized Klan murders during the 60s civil rights movement.

Reagan was vile and disgusting. He deserves to be remembered next to James Buchanan as the worst president in American history.

Ok, how was George HW Bush's presidency? Could he have had a lot of power during Reagan's presidency? I read that his grandfather bankrolled Nixon's political career and that he was indebted to the Bush's.

Because that's what this post says, and that's some poor criteria for the statement "worst president".

Reagan a vile piece of shit who is still ruining America long after his death.

His policies wrecked and continue to wreck any semblance of the middle class in America, started the War on Drugs that continues to do nothing but terrorize and wreck communities, married the Religious Right completely with the Republican Party setting up the civil war in his party today between the Tea Party and Establishment and refused to even speak on the AIDS epidemic until near the end of his second term.

This isn't even getting into his disastrous foreign policy.
