Apparently they're outsouring their car models or something.

At the end of the day, no matter how good this game looks(quite good btw) this is still Test Drive

Amen to that. The E3 video looked ass-tacular.
I dislike Test Drive as much as anyone here, but I thought the E3 gameplay video had a very nice Need for Speed (the first one, the only I enjoyed) vibe.

The rendering engine looks decent enough, but that's pretty low poly for next gen. It's not even Forza level it looks like....

It's by Eden Studios, the creators of Kya: Dark Lineage, which was unpolished but actually pretty good. Of course, that wasn't a driving game. I guess Atari orders you to make driving games once your character-driven franchise falls flat.

Yeah, but then again Forza does not have to render stuff like this :

Don't forget that the whole Hawaii island is modeled in this game and that you can go anywhere you want.

Eden = The whole V-Rally series.

I didn't know about that. It sounds awesome. Hope they deliver on that.

I'm really hyped about this game, and I don't even like V-Rally since the first one. I really want to see how the whole persistent online mode will work, it sounds really interesting.

You sir, have made a great point. I did not know that the entire island was modeled! @_o

What's up with the low poly cars? :(
Did they actually do Nfs: Porsche Unleashed for PC also? Or they just ported it? It's the best NFS game by far, and it actually has decent four-point physics.

PC models? X360=PC port?

I guess the editor is using splines or HOS, and outputting polys, otherwise they are really low poly.

Actually it's the island of Oahu, but still.
Of course, detailed cars and clothing don't mean much without well-designed courses, and it's here that Atari is relying on Mother Nature for an assist. There aren't discrete race courses in Test Drive: Unlimited, as you might expect. Instead, the entire Hawaiian island of Oahu was converted from real-world satellite and topography data into a fully realized gaming landscape. Oahu was chosen due to its inherent natural beauty, as well as its various racing environments, such as beaches, mountain, and city courses. The game island should have more than 1,000 miles of track to it, and while you're outside, you'll be able to seamlessly zoom in and out to adjust from a satellite's-eye view of the entire island all the way down to a street-level view. We're also told that real-world landmarks, such as Pearl Harbor, should be fully recognizable as you drive past (or through) them.

I dont understand the low poly comments, where do any of the models need more polys? They modelled all the grills and even the badges and doorhandles, looks like the rims might be a bumpmap, but thats about it..

Ah, ok. Much smaller island. Less impressive, but still cool. A bit bigger than The Getaway.

A bit ?

These are alpha kits shots from before E3, so the FSAA 4x will be there in due time.

They have some serious work to do. Not just add FSAA 4x. The only good thing about the E3 demo was the amazing Samsung display. But we know it run on a "30% the power of the final hardware" G5-dev kit so we'll see.

On paper the game seems really great. But it's true that with Atari anything can happen...
I'm trying to contact Eden to go to their studio do a video preview/making off, hopefully it will happen.

i am looking forward to what they will do with this title... although the modern Test Drives have sucked, the old test drive where you could roam around california or whereever was great fun.. going point to point and figuring out your own route was nice... and with online that would be a blast

I dunno, they look in 20k range to me, which isn't exactly what I'd consider "really low poly". Thing with car models is that you get into serious diminishing returns after ~8k or so...
Sure, extreme closeups will still show polygon edges on 20-30k model, but how much time do you see such angles playing a game anyhow?

They should probably get rid of vertex shading for some of their lighting terms though, it would help make those closeup shots would look nicer.

That's cool. They are still in Lyon right?

Yep. So far they did not bother replying to me so it's far from a done deal :(
I'm also trying to contact PAM about Top Spin 2.

Yeah, I guess that's what's glaring to me when I try to process these pics as next gen...

PAM is still working on the Top Spin brand as a contractor for Indie Built (and thus Take 2)

"Sex Bomb" sung by Mr. Tom Jones was one of the songs in the game on the demo at E3-- graphics and namby pamby vertex bloom shade gradients will not matter! Its all about finding the secret code!

One very cool feature of this game is that you'll be able to listen to any webradio you want while driving. It's a simple feature, but it's still a very nice idea.

Nothing will help after somebody tells you it sounds like he sings "Sex Bum". Song destroyed forever.

Oops, I said it. :/

Oahu? Pfftt... not even Maui. (My favorite)
What's the name of that one mountain pass in Maui that's really dangerous?
