After playing with the idea of getting on the usenet for a long time I actually went and signed up for a trial with Giganews.

Everything seems so overwhelming 109,000 + groups? I have no idea where to start.

Any help GAF?

I've been thinking about this, too. The modern internet has gotten pretty boring. Is usenet still awesome and full of weird shit these days, or is it a bunch of creepy hangers-on unable to move forward?

I don't think it is used for anything other then music, movie and game downloads.

And it sucks.

Also porn!

But yeah I don't think people actually use usenet anymore for anything other than those things. If there are still active discussion groups though, list 'em up because it'd be kinda interesting to check them out.

I will try to actually be helpful and say it used to be great, but now days there really is no need to get into it if you aren't already.

Umm usenet blows torrents away... Unlimited download speeds > p2p sharing...
Shut the hell up man. Let these idiots think torrents are better so the Man never goes after newsgroups.

I mean, the only reason I haven't used Usenets already is because you usually have to get a subscription service. Torrents are just easier.

I'll pay for the convenience. $10/month for being able to maximize your speed, no seeding to worry about, and no corporations sniffing thru your trackers? I'll take it.

Usenet still works for me. Particularly Bintube. $11 a month for unlimited data @ great speeds (pushed 100mbit myself) and very high retention (646 days currently). Also SSL.

Sometimes you can get content on usenet that isn't available on the torrents (some things just don't get posted, or have long since died), or just at faster speeds, etc.

Also for your reader I suggest sabnzbd. Runs as a service on your machine, access is through your browser.

Giganews is overpriced. Bintube/Astraweb is the way to go.

Don't concern yourself with the "groups". Just use a nzb search type site (bintube, binsearch, etc...), get your nzb file, load it up, get the content at blazin' speed.

Sorry for the double post. Since you signed up for Giganews, I though you should know that if you have the Diamond plan, you have access to VyprVPN, their VPN service, with servers up in the East Coast, West Coast and Neatherlands.

So if I wanted, say, some really obscure noise bands from the 80s, this would be the place to go? Because that would all still be available?

No, shit gets deleted after a while, depending on your provider. Some support 1000 days, some 500, some 100, some 10.

Also, for really obscure crap, torrents are still the best bet. For REALLY obscure crap, DC++ is better.

With this and the Limewire thread, I'm beginning to worry that the mods stopped caring about piracy.

Unless you have a really, really fast connection (30Mbps+) try Astraweb, as it is a lot cheaper.
You need a client (alt.binz is a nice free one, though if you pay you get a updated versions which fix bugs and are generally better or just pay for a good one). If you have a mac, sadly I can't recommend one as I don't use usenet on my mac. Than, instead of going to groups, you go to an indexing website (some cost money, some are free) or a post search site and search for what you want. No need to actually bother with downloading group headlines to see what each has as that can take weeks with the amount of groups.
Also, you will need software like HJsplit as some things, for good knows what reason, aren't encoded into rar files.

In case you are actually thinking about not getting the index site way, prepare to get frustrated when you inevitably download a password protected file with no way to guess the password. There is really no reason to not use an indexing site.
And always, always, use SSL. Don't forget to change the ports as the default ones aren't the SSL ones.

a.b.music.classical <-- add that :D

I used to post on rec.music.classical.. had an interesting exchange with John Bell Young, who I later met as the adjudicator of a piano competition.

Newsleecher with supersearch /Astraweb SSL, 180gb worth of downloads with no time limit on usage for $25 or around £17..........download speed of 1.15mb per second on my 10 mb connection.........ace.

honestly what good is it to hold an axe over someone's neck and then ask for their opinion?

:lol

I think they mostly go after people who pirate games

It's like the emulation/softmod threads in the gaming side. DADT.

Haven't we all moved on to torrents now?

no usenet is still large and probably will remain so due to it being hard/impossible for RIAA and their ilk to target users.

OMG WHAT IF THEY HAVE STOPPED CARING SHIIIIIIT
