What an inconsistent visual style.

Plus... apart from slightly prettier effects, it's still Win XP. The all singing, all dancing Win XP. What's it gonna do better than Win XP other than bloat? Well, it's got WGF2.0... eventually if you want to play games, it'll be the way to go, but I don't see this spurring computer upgrades anymore than a service pack.

so they made the edges of windows wider, just so they can show off some fancy, pointless transparancy effect?

That really does look just like Xp. I remember the first shots and it looked totally different.

Or maybe this is just a red herring to make us think it won't look like a new OS ;)

Yeah, I remember being annoyed when I first upgraded to XP because they increased the edge of the windows so they could round them.

Is there any need for the transparent windows? Who would use them in that situation (it's obvious these are set out specifically to show the new features and not "in-use" shots)?

Personally I would only use a browser/media player/explorer etc in full screen

what's funny is that windows has had transparent windows features since 2000. so the cool new look they are hyping can be done on today's OS. LOL!

I guess you haven't seen Tiger?

He was being sarcastic (at least I'm fairly sure he was).

I don't like the transparent title bars and some things are inconsistent. I don't care that much, though. Whether I like it or not, it's what I work on.

Well apparently now you need a minimum of 2 Gig RAM. :lol

Wasn't the whole purpose of Avalon or WinFX to be able to reconfigure the layout to however you wanted? Maybe this person just made their version look like XP. :D

No that's just how it looks. It's supposed to change before the release.

At least people aren't releasing pics with the sidebar anymore. Those looked even worse.

The transparency effect obscures the text in the title bars too much. They try to fix this with a little white glow/blur effect behind the text, but it just ends-up making everything look ugly--or at the very least increases the amount of visual noise. Some of the new UI elements are just ugly, particularly the address and search bars, they're just not working. The Recycle Bin now looks like a clear glass for some reason?

And the world lets out a collective YAWN. If Microsoft wants to have a better uptake on Longhorn than they had on the Windows XP migration they better get cracking.

Outside of the tabbed IE, these screens are having a negative impact on my already low expectations.

doesn't help that XP never gave me any problems, so far

yeah the old Longhorn pics were so much better. This just.. looks like XP service pack 3 or something stupid.

The only thing different is the way IE looks, and it looks bad. really bad.

I want to call everyone here dumbasses, but I won't. This is not te final GUI. In fact, the one in development looks much nicer, and more consistent. This is just a technical beta. The final will look much different.

As far as I know, the new presentation style for Longhorn is still underwraps, aside from the shots/videos we've seen earlier. Most people within Microsoft haven't seen it. Of course, Microsoft could just be bs'ing, and this ugly POS could be the final. Doubt it though.

Well you started it, I wil finish it.

AN OS IS NOT THE GUI. Just cause the OS looks like XP does not mean it runs like XP.

Everyone here who is calling this a service pack, or a new XP is really...well...stupid.

Under the hood is a completely new OS.

Where were you when Microsoft kept dropping features from Longhorn and adding supposed Longhorn elements as future XP updates?

And people are commenting on its look based on screenshots, and it DOES look like XP. Nobody is talking about how it actually runs, nor does anyone care.

thank god for macos x86

You're very likely going to need to do some kind of hardware modding to get it to run on a non-Apple machine.

As for Longhorn, not only is Microsoft gutting features from it left and right - completely destroying the purpose of buying it - but now they've managed to make it uglier. Why do I want to buy this again? Why do I need it again?

Does anyone have any links to vids of the older version of Longhorn running, which has it doing tons of 3D trickery? Or has MS destroyed all those?

you're not talking about vids from that SUN demonstration are you? I've never seen vids of Longhorn running, personally

Those vids are readily available. And that is a fraction of what's yet to come. This is a new OS, the beta just does not have everthing tied in yet.

screenshots tell me shit about interface. It would behoove MS to rip off Apple's expose in some fashion and you just can't tell that in screens. It doesn't need to be some crazy 3D gimmickry, just a a way to move between open windows with the least amount of work possible.
