New Yoshi Touch and go impressions at CES

"It's all controlled with the touch screen, which is a noble effort in simplicity -- our only problem with the game, which we would love to see Nintendo fix before release, was that there was one function too many for touch play in the Yoshi stages. Egg tossing was a delicate timing trick -- you tap and hold for just a little bit to launch your eggs -- and although players can pick up the timing, there's that left trigger (or the right one, for lefties out there) just sitting there, unused. The way it is now, if you tap too short, nothing happens but a puff of air, and if you drag while touching to prep an egg toss, you're drawing a cloud. This is a necessary mechanic to the gameplay, and a lot of casual gamers might have a hard time figuring it out (if at all -- we weren't even sure we could fire our eggs at any given time the first few plays until we did it accidentally.) If Nintendo could slack off its self-imposed limit for touch-only play in this game just a bit, it would help some folks out, and might do a favor to the more hardcore as well so they have instant access to their eggs."

Anyone interested?

I'm highly interested in this based on the previews I've read. I think it could be the beginning of more mature DS games in terms of bringing good use of the DS to the table.

Well you can't control this with "traditional" controls since the point is to draw on the screen to keep the characters away from danger. That's the whole point of the game.

The IGN guys are just asking Nintendo to use the R or L button as a way to manage egg throwing.

For the DS I'm looking forward to ...

Yoshi's Touch N' Go
Mario Kart DS
Advance Wars DS
Goemon DS
Castlevania
Kirby DS
Metroid Prime Hunters
Super Mario Bros. DS
Final Fantasy III
Secret of Mana

Yikes that's a lot of software.

This is another game I think is going to be short, though for no real reason. Last time I thought this was with DK: Jungle Beat, and I was right, so let's hope that was a one off.

I hope it's at least as long as Yoshi's Island.

Do you own Jungle Beat? If so, have you unlocked all 18 stages and gotten platinum on any course? It's longer than you think with more replay value than you think.

No, and I'm really glad JB has a high level of replay value, but I sitll consider it short (from what I've heard).

On the other hand, I'd probably take a game about the same length for Yoshi's T&G, as long as it's as good as JB apparently is. Plus it has multiplayer of some sort, that could help.

Oli; the only things that matter nowadays are how long it takes you to get from the beginning of the game to the end boss and credits, and the inclusion of multiplayer deathmatch in any and all games. Sports games are exempt from requiring a deathmatch mode, but are all good because they have multiplayer.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. ONLY MULTIPLAYER, DEATHMATCH, AND HOW LONG IT TAKES TO GET TO THE END BOSS

IGN DK:JB REVIEW SUMMARY

TIME TO END BOSS:
2/10
It didn't take too long to get there, even though you keep unlocking levels afterwards.

MULTIPLAYER
0/10
I don't think it has it.

DEATHMATCH
0/10
I know it doesn't have it.

FINAL SCORE
.4/10

Yeah I hate how Nintendo can't make a cohesive game thats long when they try something 'innovative'. OK, we make a new idea, thats a game thats good for a couple hours and thats it. Why can't they make something decently long? Luigi's Mansion, Pac-Man Vs., Jungle Beat, Wario Ware, and probably this game. New elements of gameplay doesn't = lastingness ... make the games longer, damn. You have a good idea, and the games are 2-3 hours long. Why? And I don't consider replaying it over to find or collect one or two new things to count. You can put that kind of cheap replay in any game.

Because there's something fun and wonderful about an entire gaming experience that can be had in a couple sittings instead of several sittings over the course of several weeks.

Luigi's Mansion is the perfect game to illustrate this. It has wonderfully crafter and unique gameplay devices, a wonderful pace, decent variety, and a short length. It's a game that can be played over and over year after year. Mario Sunshine took much longer to complete, but I can't bring myself to replay it at all.

I'll play LM every year for years to come because it's good, short, full experience just like ALTTP and Mario 3 before it. Jungle Beat can be tossed in with those, though it's more accessable to pick-up-and-play gamers.

I don't think you pick up and play it over and over because of it's short length, but because it has a good idea. I didn't think Mario Sunshine was that great myself, length or not.

I prefer shorter orgasms over longer ones myself. Or, for that matter, no orgasm at all.

sounds like they're trying to justify the touch screen at the expense of leaving out traditional controls
Ugh, tradition. Get it away from me, old man. Controls have and can come in all forms. Nintendo made the modern controller, they should kill it!

(not really, but kind of)

I just personally don't find things like gaining medals just for the sake of gaining medals to be rewarding. In the Rogue Squadron games for example I only bother trying because it unlocks stuff.

With that being said, DK: JB might actually have a hope of enticing me back. From all impressions I've read it's a great game anyway, so why wouldn't I want to come back whether it has medals or not, plus if it's anything like dance games where I find getting all the beats perfect extremely rewarding, then we'll be in business.

I still consider it short though. A 10 hour game is short, a 10 hour games with high replay value is good. A 4 hour game is REALLY short, a 4 hour game with high replay value is just short. Going back to the dancing game comparison, you could release a dancing game with 10 great songs which will take a long time to get perfect. And I'll like it. But I'm still not going to think there's enough in there.

I keep hearing all this about DK:JB and I keep remembering Star Fox 64. SF64 was extremely fun, but very short. It had plenty of replay value, and I found myself trying to beat my past times and scores. Getting medals and all that good stuff. If DK:JB's replay value is like that.

Hollywood is going to die.

Last time I checked A Link to the Past and Mario 3 weren't considered short, nor are they in actuality.

The thing with DK:JB is that its not difficult in any real sense to get golds. Platinums are hard to get, but I don't really find myself overly compelled to try for them. Lost story short, I think people on the whole are not going to find JB to have a hugely high replay value, save for when people who have not experienced it yet are around.

Also, Mario 3 & ALTTP short? Olimario, wtf?

SMB3 is short! That one guy
with an emulator
beat it in like 11 minutes!

Does anyone know any details about who exactly is developing this yoshi game? I'm a bit wary about preordering after yoshi universal gravitation...

Super Mario 3 is only short if you use the whistles.. why in the hell you would want to skip through half the game to get through it quickly is beyond me.. I never understood why Miyamato put the whistles in the game... 90% of people who beat the game missed huge chunks of the game.

Mario 3 was short?

Three warp whistles and you're at the end in about two hours

Of course, I only did this when I didn't want to play through the lameshit ice and pipe maze worlds

You think most people used the whistles to beat it?

Dorks. :lol

I blame Fred Savage!

because you couldn't save in the NES version, not everyone wants to sit through the entire game everytime to beat it
