Next Gen games - what do you want/expect?

We have already seen a few screenshots that are supposed to 'represent' next gen graphics. You have some people that dismiss these and say 'get ready to be blown away'. Still others claim 'you are expecting too much'.

I am sure some here are in a much better position to tell us what to expect from the upcoming round of consoles. For these posters I ask: What are you goals? What are some ideas you had this gen that where simply not possible?

Here is my pipe dream list:

AA - should be a given that all next gen titles will have nice AA.

60fps - I know alot of games this gen run at 30fps so they can add more effects/polys/whatever. Will this trend continue into next gen? I vote for no, but we shall see.

cloth/deformable surfaces - I want to see trees blowing in the wind, hair flowing naturally, clothes that look like, you know clothes. And don't forget the GRASS for god sakes.

destructible/persistant environments - If I shoot a rocket launcher at a wall, I want there to be a large hole in the wall. If I break a guys neck, I want his body to be there when I have to backtrack and get the card key.

A.I. - We have come a long way from waves of enemys following a set path. I still think there is a long way to go before we have believable autonomous AI characters though.

online - every game that isn't a wholly single player adventure should have an online option.

thats all I can think of right now...

Don't give a fucking shit about graphics.

Good concepts, good AI, resultingly fun gameplay is what I want.
I have low expectations as to what we'll get for the most part.

Hundreds upon hundreds of games in each system's catalogue (providing companies can actually cope) and I'll only own a tiny fraction of them.

Glitch-free games - spend the money on game testers and then listen to and fix what they find wrong with a game. I'm looking at you Ubisoft.

This problem is always going to exist, because you're going to have developers that will want 2x more geometry and a steady 30fps over a 60fps with half. I will say the amount of 30fps games should decrease, but it's never going away.

I want every game to include a FPS display so that it SCREWS EVERY GAME EXPERIENCE TO THOSE 60FPS WHORES.

My main wishes:

Anti Aliasing becoming the standard
Improved Physics (PPU anyone?)
Camera Angles that go for a more dramatic effect (see: God of War)

A graphics options menu. I want to be able to turn off AA/reflections etc. in order to get better FPS in graphics intense games

this would be wonderful. in the early days of the ps2, it looked like it might happen this gen. most good ps2 games were 60fps. but ps2 developers got more ambitious, western developers on xbox had other priorities, and nintendo didn't push the gamecube. it's a shame, really.

uh, what?
that's for PC games only, because system power varies from pc to pc

Loading times should be shorter or eradicated if possible. Nothing more frustrating than long loading times(Stuntman anyone? :lol )

Consoles have slowdown due to special effects all the time. Developers often leave little breathing room for the graphics so that most scenes look nice. The intense scenes slow down, and aren't shown in the game trailers as much. I'm someone who prefers fluidity/consistency over detail, so this doesn't sound too bad. However, it would probably be deemed too "technical" to put in a console game. They like to keep things simple and dumbed down for the end user, as I think it should be. But I also think they should design the game graphically to fit snugly in the capabilities of the system. Do whatever fancy/strange things you need to to stretch your game past the system's limits, but don't make the game cry during complex scenes. Make it appear comfortable.

It's definitely intangible, but I want more games with real atmosphere to them. This doesn't necessarily mean dark or gloomy, but games that create a real sense of immersion and really draw you in. I'm not at all wanting all these games to have more realistic graphics, but I've only played a handful of games this gen that really kept me up playing until 4:00 in the morning out of sheer amazement and desire. Perhaps its due to my age and so many other distractions/real life that I have trouble getting sucked in, but I know part of the blame lies with the games themselves.

The same thing the PSone brought us, just preitter.

Truth to be said, if you believe games are going to be a huge leap, well you just got your expectations too up and just setting up yourself for disappointment. The ONLY time next-gen games would be a leap is if we get something totally new and never been done before rather than recycled from a previous console cycle. If anything, I would say the Nintendo's Revolution would bring that "leap" if they play thier cards rights.

Would agree with you there

You are still going to see 30 fps game caps. Reason? They are pushing the system more and that's all they can get out of it.

Probably see more of this and it will probably increase over time on the systems.

To a point. Memory is always a constant battle with developers I am sure. Things will probably still "disappear" but hopefully we will have enough where we can keep things around. Gotta create and destroy those entities! Don't have infinite memory unfortunately.

This is the future of gaming. AI. The rest, really - is fluff. If you can trick the user into not being able to tell if they are dealing with human I or AI - then you will really have something. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory has some of the coolest AI I have ever seen. Its by no means perfect, but its definitely a step in the right direction. I am sure it will improve in this generation, but don't expect too much.

You are still going to see purely single player games. Agreed on RE4 didn't need an online component. That game was a stellar single players wonderland. And quite frankly, sometimes you don't want to have to deal with random assholes when your friends aren't available to spar.

I want cell shaded games that look like anime :)

And that could been done now without a hardware upgrade. Ever heard of the game arcade game from SEGA called Ollie King? I swear, the game hits you at a point that it actually does a great job at making you think your looking at a living/breathing animated cartoon. In fact before it, Jet Set Radio on the Dreamcast did a wonderful at it, and this wasn't done on super-hardware,but hardware considered inferior buy gamers standard today.

Anti-aliasing probably won't have high sampling on the consoles. A tile-based renderer would be great for that.

new experiences. new levels of immersion.

as for what i want, i want a sequal to Snatcher, the return of IRD (although that's going down for sure), and whatever namco, nintendo, capcom, konami, and certain sega teams want to throw at me.

The true answer to this question is:

Ferrets. That's what I want. And that's what I expect.

Greatly cut down on load times, much bigger environments, and locked in 60FPS. No annoying slowdown. This is probably a pipe dream, I know.

The tech will be there, i can't care less about anything but the games.
I want a:

Lolo
Rad Racer
Beyond Good and Evil
GTA
Gran Turismo
TOCA
Katamari
Maximo
nice platformers
2D games
a FPS here and there
ACTION RPG (how come nobody is able to do those correctly? can't anybody copy Zelda or something?)

I actually own it and i love it so far. But it's a part of my huge backlog right now. I'll get serious at it maybe next month or so.

HL2/Doom3/Far Cry on a 6800 Ultra max settings

Multiply that by 5-10.
