Nexus Mods has been sold

Less censorship? More?

They're riding on the popularity of being the biggest site hosting mods, but that may change eventually if they'll remain on the current course (or double down).

as with most activism, the second the money comes along all morals get thrown out the window, I expect the "moderation" to change fairly dramatically.

If history is a guide they probably sold it to some conservative religious people who didn't know what they are getting and half of the lewd or controversial mods will be delisted in under a year.

Could you give an example of this happening? I genuinely don't know what you're referring to lol.

Oh it's the website that only hosts adolf hitler mods according to some purple website

Sold to who though, if it is a corporate or agenda driven company or organization, it won't be for the better in the future but worse imo, but hopefully the modding community will fight back and create a new site if they have to, after all i didn't start using mods with the Nexus, it was Gamespy Arcade then the nexus took over with especially Bethesda's games over time and BGS don't seem to want to make those high quality games anymore at the minute, time will tell.

If they start monetising too heavily it will easily fall apart, plenty of other modding sites that are around. Including Steam workshop.

Next time can you please put some context in the OP? That would be really cool, and far better than just a lazy copy/past of a link...

Thanks!

There was no context available when I posted it lol. The statement doesn't mention who it was sold to and only cites two anon people as the new leadership of the site.

I'll try and take a look later tonight and see if anything's been uncovered.

Something like this is good enough (thanks Grok haha):

"Nexus Mods founder Robin "Dark0ne" Scott is stepping down after 24 years due to stress, selling the site to new owners Victor and Marinus. He'll stay active in the mod authors' Discord, and most staff will remain. The decision has been made to prioritizes his mental health and ensure the community's future."

Not doing this to trow shade at you specifically, it's not much but I just hate to see a single link in a OP :messenger_grinning_sweat:

No problems

I did the op in a hurry tbh, I did quickly read the post before pasting the link and found it to have basically zero info of relevance so decided it was better to write nothing than write something that's based on a quick skim and turns out to be wrong later.

Nexus was a piece of shit anyways, so nothing of value can be lost, biased censorship, egocentric devs that looked down on their own players, and a system that constantly tried to get money out of you. It might not be the best place but ModDB kick its ass a thousand times. If it werent because of kids from 2010 that couldnt copy and paste files the site would have died long ago.

I would like to think this could make Nexus better, but it probably wont, the guys that buy it want to earn more money or it would be just a waste of time. On the plus side, other sides would see a rise on popularity.

Nexus Mods should just die anyways. Once it became a site that only allowed mods which supported one insane political agenda, that was the writing on the wall for them. I'm sure the owner realized that his site could no longer be saved after they were censoring a mod which brought back proper gender terms in the 19 years old Oblivion and found the first guy willing to buy it and sold the site. He wanted the get the fuck out of there

Again, as this seems to need to be repeated. Nexus was the only place which properly supported APIs, mod managers and cool software like Wabberjack (ex.).

None of the current other modding sides (GameBanana, ModDB, etc.) does that. Despite some issues, Nexus had by far best infrastructure for a modding site, short of Valve's Steamworks supported mods and even with that Nexus offered more flexibility.

I expect all of this to go down the drain though with the new buyer (who they can't even mention apparently). We will see paywalls, raised subscription fees and general cuts to services.

And? They charge for premium for it and acted like the owners of modding. Not worth it by any means. Modding is a powerful thing by and for the community, you even learn a thing or two by just installing mods on your favorite games.

And yes, they will rise the subscription and many things will be worse, and they had it coming.

They can't make money while trying to ban "gooner" pleasing mods.

Majority will not care and will simply get mods elsewhere. Nothing of value was lost especially when the site is ran by activists.

People want to act like Nexus has nothing to offer because of the Spider-Man mod debacle etc, but if you're going to ignore the hundreds of thousands of other mods that exist in a centralised, easy to find place then you're missing the forest for the trees.

Might have to make one last mod list each for Skyrim and Fallout 4 to ensure I have the essentials, because god knows what will happen. That's forgetting all those smaller ones that are insanely helpful.

GOG getting into mod hosting couldn't have come at a better time, although it's only for large scale mods. I wonder if they would consider spinning it off into a full blown site in the future.

I'm actually a bit perplexed about the amount of hate Nexus gets

People are even saying that nothing of value was lost lol

Again, nobody else offers this functionality. It saves literally days of messing around with mod lists. And yes, they charged a very fair amount considering the bandwidth and the need to support the API amongst other things.

Now this will probably be all f-d up.

I think I've figured out the scoring system. Let me break down the numbers because I think I got this right:

ModDB
Shit layout from 1999: -20 points
Still exists: 10 points

NexusMods
Centralised database: 100 points
Hundreds of thousands of mods: 100 points
API for external tools offering updates and untold convenience: 100 points
Other features too numerous to name: 100 points
Took down the flag mod and a few others: -∞ points
Optional premium subscription: -∞ points

Final scores:
ModDB: 10 points
NexusMods: -∞ x2 points

I hope that helps clear things up as to why Nexus has no value and no one ever would lose out if they disappeared tomorrow and ModDB is the clear king so now you see the numbers don't lie and they spell disaster for NexusMods

Its just a site which is hosting mods. The real star are the modders.

Nexus is also a perfect example to show the positive and negative sides of "centralization". It can be a very useful and convenient for users, but it can be also used as a weapon against them. And Nexus decided they wanted to use it as a weapon as well. So yeah, they fully earned this current sentiment. 🤷‍♂️

Yep. It's all so weird to see how this all ended up if you've been there since the start. All of this 'banning' mods for political reasons and shite

What the hell happend to gaming..

BYE BYE Nexus Mods?

Even stricter rules on adult mods coming.

BYE BYE Nexus Mods....
Eh this seems like a total nothing burger. They're legally required to do age verification in the UK now (and EU?), so they're doing that. They're also going to make sure that adult mods are categorized correctly (good) and they're adding more categories for mod authors to select and users to vote on (also good). They're also scanning screenshots for child abuse (weird and lmao) but again that is just to comply with legal requirements as a website that allows user-generated adult content.

It's not like someone is going to offer a better alternative, in this case, because they'll be subject to the same laws.

Seems like that's because of the UK/EU nanny state. Maybe bye bye in a lot of European countries, but probably not everywhere. Yet.

Apparently the rest of the civilised countries are following suit in the next year, and believe it or not that includes most states within the US (the civilised ones?)

I don't see why these changes are a problem, unless someone's just a dodgy asf gamer. Tough shit to those people I guess.
