This will be a bit long but I was just looking at some cap figures for 2017 specific to the Giants and the team is in a really good position to resign some key players if they choose to. Bearing in mind that payers like Odell, Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg will also be coming up for extension in the very near future. Odell in particular is going to break the bank if he continues his pace of production.

Regardless in 2017 if the cap stays the same (and that's highly unlikely), the Giants will have about 28 million in cap space. That doesn't include a likely 4 million they will carry over from 2017. So let's say we're looking at about 32 million prior to the team making any moves.

Keenan Robinson
Larry Donnell
Kelvin Sheppard
Coty Sensabaugh
Trevin Wade
Mark Herzlich
Zak DeOssie
Marshall Newhouse

The bolded are the most important of the group. There's a number of guys there that will be extremely cheap to resign if the team chooses to. ST guys like Herzlich, DeOssie, etc. Keenan Robinson has actually played pretty well for us and he's not likely to break the bank either. Regardless, JPP and Hankins are the pure focus in free agency for Jerry Reese.

So with 32 million going into the 2017 season with the current cap which is likely to rise, the Giants have plenty of moves they will make to continue to clear cap space.

Cap casualties or players that will be asked to take massive pay cuts to stay:

Victor Cruz - $9,400,000 (cap savings of 7.5 million if hes cut)
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - $8,500,000 (cap savings of 4.5 million if hes cut)
JT Thomas - $4,000,000 (cap savings of 3 million if hes cut)

JT Thomas is gone. He's done nothing for the team and his contract was a bad one.

Victor is very likely to take a substantial pay cut to stay in NY like he did this year. He's made some plays this year but hasn't proven he's the dynamic playmaker he once was. Though to be entirely fair, his injury is the type where it takes a year before you see how well a guy has truly healed. He's a Jersey native and he knows his market is in NY and the Giants love him. I see him staying at a similar rate to what he's been paid this season (about 4-5 million).

I would love for DRC to take a paycut as well but I think he's likely to either retire or move on for one last paycheck if he can get it. His body has broken down over the past two years which is why he's on limited snaps but the snaps he does play - he's pretty freaking great.

Regardless, *if* those players move on or have their pay sliced, the Giants could easily free up close to if not over 40 million in space before there is any increase to the cap number. That's plenty of room to address the free agents that we have.

In fact, Rowe has taken the starting job from CB Logan Ryan (or at least will rotate as a starter based upon opposing personnel), meaning that he will be expected to play the majority of the defensive snaps for the rest of the season.

That's fair, although this will sound ridiculous, but I'd rather get beat like that. The coverage on that TD to Adams, and the later 50 yard bomb to Adams, was good, and a better CB would've at least broken it up. Rodgers' placement was perfect on that TD but Carroll honestly should've been able to intercept it. And by forcing them to do that more, maybe the CBs succeed a few times. Plus, it would make Rodgers hold the ball longer and maybe get the pass rush home, even though they were largely ineffective. Wouldn't have made a difference, but I'd rather lose by getting constant bombs dropped on us than just having quick 5-8 yard dump offs marching down the field.

The one positive I take from this game is that it's pretty much the same issues the Eagles have had all season. If every week there was a different failing, then the team would have no idea how to improve in the offseason. Whereas every week it's the same thing. CBs and WRs suck, and we have a rookie QB who's making some mistakes. The issues we've been seeing with Wentz were what the draft scouts were expecting to see. Mostly inaccuracy issues down the field and locking on to the first read. Before this season, he had only started 30 games ever, throughout high school and college. I think he can be coached up and fixed. As for the CBs and WRs, if you go into the offseason knowing what you have to fix, it makes things a lot easier. The OL for all it's faults has been holding up pretty good, at least to the point where they aren't the most pressing need. Last offseason, the Eagles needed to improve at OL, LB, and the Secondary, so they grabbed Brandon Brooks, Nigel Bradham, and Rodney McLeod, and took Vaitai and Seumalo in the draft. In their worst games they've earned their contracts, and in their best games they've been steals. And Vaitai and Seumalo show promise. This offseason, we know we need to fix the WRs and CBs. I'm confident Howie will be able to bring in the players to fix these issues, and hopefully next year will be a bit better and they can make it into the playoffs. The team is still a ways off, but there's a roadmap going forward, and we have a rookie QB who's shown promise, but is trying to do too much with no supporting cast around him. They need to give him that cast and stop making him do everything on his own.

Your first point is interesting and doesn't sound ridiculous. The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to agree. Although, I can see merit in the philosphy of making an offense need long sustaining drives to score. The thinking being the offense is bound to make a mistake.

They started playing more coverage later in the game, and having Hicks spy Rodgers. I'll post A-22 gifs of pass plays from that game. It'll be fun to talk about.
