Even the best receiver is useless if a QB cant get the ball to him though. Calvin is part of the equation but 41 TDs is no easy feat.
The team wasn't that bad in the second half last season, and the two guys we dumped were primarily responsible for that. Hartline, Fasano and Bess wouldn't have been reliable if Marshall wasn't such a good deep threat. Even with all the drops and off-field issues, he was still reliable. You don't draft a rookie QB and then let go of the only guys that can get separation and catch a ball.
Ditto on defense. We were solid enough that we could compete before. Losing Vontae Davis means it's open season on our secondary. We get no push up front...none. Even a one-armed, one-eyed QB could pick us apart. Marshall can't stay with his man, and is gonna get lit up. He's busy stat-padding with tackles the way Sean Smith did last season, primarily because he can't stop anyone from catching the ball. He's been terrible in coverage this preseason.
It's just a disaster. You say we unloaded trash, and I say we let go of talent that a good coach would get to conform to his system. Vontae has been productive enough in his tenure here that it made no sense letting him go. It's not like he had a great coach that whipped him into shape before, so only giving him a month under what we hope is a good coach in Philbin is selling short. a 2nd and 6th for a guy you drafted 1st with all-pro potential is selling short. If we got a receiver back, it would be one thing. Getting picks that Ireland is just gonna waste is selling short.
I can't tell you the last time we had a good draft. I thought this past draft was the best in over a decade, but looking at how the guys are performing, I don't really know about that. It's not like Vontae didn't have character issues before the draft either. We drafted him knowing what he would be like. So what were the expectations, really?
If we had depth at WR and CB, I wouldn't feel bad about either move. However, we were already thin at both positions and sent away the best guys at each position. It's a bad situation. Many of us thought this would be the rebuilding year. We've been wallowing in misery for decades and each year we're told something good will happen. Well...this season they're just blowing the whole thing up, and wasting the careers of some guys who were really hoping to ride the wave of momentum from last season into this one.
Fans are kind of numb to the whole thing now. Everyone down here is getting more-hyped for the Canes season kickoff than anything Dolphins-related. And the Canes are gonna have one of their worst seasons in history, with a roster loaded with true freshmen. That's how bad it is. Once Heat training camp starts up at the end of September, some semblance of positivity will return to the sporting mood of this town. That's the only organization down here that shows any direction. That team went through a 15 win season, but improved immediately afterwards. The Dolphins have had the equivalent of a 15 win season for what feels like 5 or 6 years running now. No hope of improvement in sight. Players and coaches are using our franchise as leverage, nothing more. No one wants to come here to play for this crappy organization, only the hopeless. It sucks to be a Phins fan these days, but this is the team I love. PEACE.

The old refs are better than the new refs. The old refs blew calls too, but not at the clip the new refs have and will. If you watch college ball, you know this. Depending on what conference they come from too, they can be downright awful. I didn't have too much beef with the SEC refs, but hated ACC refs. It's really gonna be a nightmare in close games where calls that were previously routine become a fiasco. The NFL will come out pretty unfazed at the end of it because people love the NFL too much. But it's gonna make for a lot of cringe-worthy moments IMO. PEACE.

I agree. I think people saying "derp Calvin Johnson" when talking about Stafford's year last year are ridiculous. Why doesn't Larry Fitzgerald's QB have that type of year? How about Andre Johnson's?

I've heard a lot of things about the Panthers' 2012 chances, but "easier schedule" isn't one of 'em. Hell, our first four games are @TB, vs NO, vs NYG, @ATL. I'm hoping for 2-2 out of the gates but wouldn't be surprised with 1-3.

Hopefully the Lions organization can provide him with a better Oline, but enjoy this time with a great QB. You guys deserve that much.
I think Smith would be a pretty solid QB if he had three years to sit in the same offense instead of being bounced around between OCs every season. Would be interesting to see how Rodgers plays without that chip on his shoulder from falling in the draft.

1. A sense of entitlement
2. A strong competitive drive
3. A giant chip on his shoulder
What happened in the draft only added fuel to the fire. Dude would have been good anywhere.
What Rodgers did last season is fucking amazing, not just good. I'm sure he would be a great QB anywhere but as good as he is? Pretty hard to tell.

I meant that they had an easier schedule than Detroit (as we were comparing the two teams and their eventual record).
Calvin Johnson and Matt Stafford are great and it's so much fun to watch them play.
That doesn't mean I'm blinded to how horrific our secondary is and how our offensive line opens zero holes for the running game.
Also, Schwartz is a nutcase.

I'm surprised some WR needy team hasn't at least taken a flyer on Plax. He was a nice red zone threat last season and seems to be one of the few older vets that have /something/left in the tank.

Can't remember where I read it but it was something to the effect that the Jets felt Plax was a malcontent who was whispering in Santonio's ear and got him riled up. Similar to Moss and Harvin with Chilly

And I am surprised it hasn't been the Eagles. For a team that loves to pass so much and performed so poorly in the redzone it would make 100% sense to pick up a large target who even at reduced speed can still jump up higher than most CBs and battle for the ball. He had 8 TDs last season and those were largely in the redzone.
The Eagles need someone like him to compliment the smaller speedy Maclin and DJAX. I don't know if its a money issue because I know he wanted something like 3M per year at the start of the off-season. Would have loved to have signed him for even 1 year.
