UK Software Charts (w/e 18/12/2004)

* The Top 40 Entertainment Software Chart sees EA taking a fourth consecutive week at No1 (although sales only climb 3% over last week) claiming the Christmas No1 spot thanks to 'Need For Speed: Underground 2' (PS2/XB/GC/PC/GBA) - the original 'NFS Underground' was No2 last year behind EA's own 'Medal Of Honor: Rising Sun'. There is actually no change in the Top 6 over last week, with Rockstar/Take 2 claiming No2 in the Christmas Chart thanks to PS2 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' (+10% over last week) - the title also claims 8 unbroken weeks at No1 on the PS2 chart since launch. Activision's attempt at repeating EA's feat last year with a yuletide wargame FPS nearly paid off as 'Call Of Duty: Finest Hour' (PS2/XB/GC) manages a respectable 3rd place in the Chart with sales climbing 15% overall compared to last week. Disney/THQ remain at No4 with the 5 formats of 'The Incredibles' (up 15% over last week) and EA's 7 format 'FIFA 2005' remains at No5 (also up 15% over last week). Ubisoft's PS2/XB/GC/PC 'Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within' climbs 13% over last week and remains at No6 - this is a substantial improvement on 'Prince: Sands Of Time' which got to No13 this time last year. Konami climb 2 places to No7 (+37%) thanks to PS2/XB/PC 'Pro Evolution Soccer 4' with EA down one place to No8 with PS2/XB/GC 'Goldeneye: Rogue Agent' (+7%). Sony's PS2 'The Getaway: Black Monday' drops one place to No9 (+10%) and finally, we have a game that was actually in the chart in week 51, 2003 - Vivendi's 'The Simpsons: Hit & Run' was No3 last year at full price and this year climbs 3 places over last week to reach the Top 10 as a popular budget title on PS2/XB/GC/PC (No10 / +60%).

Almost selling on par with FIFA.. I wonder how long before EA buys exclusive rights for the FIFA license :lol

Pro Evo doesnt have a fifa lisence I think. Well at least all the player names are different.

Sriram's right. They've had an exclusive FIFA liscence for years. But in PES4, I think Konami were allowed to use player names via a new lisence. PES4 has acquired likenesses and names liscenced from FIFpro - an organisation representing professional footballers themselves. But as for team names, kit designs etc... EAs games have all of that over PES. Those things come under respective football associations jurisdiction... a lot of which are under the FIFA banner. 205 football associations IIRC. Not that it matters to many people. With Pro Evo / Winning Eleven, Konami have managed to get rights to some kits/likenesses/names etc - Liga, JPA/Korean Football Association...

You can get game saves online that people have painstakingly put together to correct team names / football kits for PES4 anyway.

I just thought of this but it makes sense.

The UK is a small country thus the % of the population that see's tv ad's is going to be higher. *well on terestrial anyway but its still the most popular* Now if you live here you know that EA advertises pretty much EVERY significant game they release. For example, EA have been advertising goldeneye LOADS. (Nintendo doesn't advertise on TV anymore it seems stupid NOE sack them all.)

We are slaves to the advertising. Country of dummy casuals I'm afraid

I reckon some of it is to do with advertising, but not all of it. It doesn't really bother me. I think a lot of it could be down to review scores actually. A lot of TV shows, and some official and non-official mags/rags will be prepared to give a game like Goldeneye: Rogue Agent a good score. It's rare where you get mags like Edge and GamesTM that won't. It's kind of like tabloids vs broadsheets in the newspaper world. The games related TV shows in the UK are CRAP CRAP CRAP too.

As for NFSU, I think it's number 1 here not only for the reasons above but because it just appeals to a lot of people. It's not only advertised as such, but the game is straight out of Men & Motors / lad-culture territory. Lead babe character, free-roaming city aspect (I've heard things along the lines of "you can drive about the city like in GTA"), ability to tweak cars lots, and an urban street racing theme. I think it appeals to scals/townies in a fantasy land where they like the idea of suped up cars they can't afford in real life, illegal street racing activity and respect of the public at large and / or babes therein. The game is a lot better than it's predecessor too. Which people here also seemed to enjoy. I know this board establishes sensible concensus on games every now and then -- but maybe people actually enjoy this one too?

There is something wrong with this picture.

No there isn't.

Game selling on three platforms outperforms game selling on one. Not the biggest shock of all time. Look at the XBox charts, and you'll see Halo 2 crushing Goldeneye like a bug, but until Halo 2 comes out on PS2 you can't expect it to be a chart topper.

seems brits buy whatever that is advertised to them. If the advertising there is similar to Sweden, COD/NFSU2/Goldeneye are the only games that get any advertising really.

Of those games the ones with heavy advertising rotation are the top 5 (heavily), Prince of Persia: WW, Pro Evo 4, Goldeneye Rogue Agent, Halo 2 and SD Vs. Raw (in moderation) with stuff like Metroid 2, Ghost Recon 2, Killzone, Spiderman 2 and Battle for Middle Earth getting occasionally advertised.

YO MATEZ DIS GAME HAFF DA AUFENTIK UK JARGON, NO WUNDER ITS SELLIN!

Jesus christ, fuck this game

NFSU2 rocks, lots of people on this board have been saying it for a while. The lingo skip is just a button away, and it looks and plays great on PC, the only version I've tried. All the EA/street racing scene haters are up to their usual dumb remarks. It is a very solid game with a few EA styled flaws, probably my favorite single player game of the year (granted I'm not that much of a single player gamer).

It always seems like the same people who moan about the taste of UK gamers. Like Japan and the US, crap games manage to sell on hype, marketing, lucrative license, whatever.

Of course the glaring omission here is the complete lack of Nintendo games or anything to do with Nintendo... :D

Damn, I am about halfway through the game and I have not noticed this style of langauge. I really dont pay much attention to what anyone says other than Brooke and I know she doesnt speak this way. Its a really fun game regardless of what you think of the culture it represents.

Chart track's panel is made up of multi-purpose high street stores that don't sell Nintendo stuff, or sell it in negligable quantity (electrical stores / places where you get basic everyday shopping requirements -- Dixons, Currys, WH Smith, Woolworths, etc).

If there was a seperate specialist entertainment/game shop chart they might be on it then. But it would still be Xbox/PS2/multiplatform stuff at the top. Nintendo have beaten themselves up here this gen.

Yeah, but there is a good reason for this: no one's buying it. Maybe they did once. A long time ago, but not anymore. Like you say, it all comes back to Nintendo of Europe and their mistakes.
