I've been hunkering for some hockey action now that the NHL is coming back this year. I haven't played a NHL game since Gretzky game on the N64........... so what's the verdict on EA's NHL '06 or Take-Two NHL 2k6? which is the best one to get? from what i heard 2k has been pretty good the last couple of years but i heard that EA's game has made a big improvement. so which way do i go?

2k is the way.

I prefered '96 with season and create players. But good times during those 90's. I remember skating past the net, holding my slapshot and shooting it at the last moment.

I replaced my Sundin cover with one of these instead

Sure it's the wrong game, but *shrug* whatcha gonna do?

I'm thinking 06. I havent had as much playtime with 2k yet as I've had with 06. But I've played about 30 games of 06 and have nothing to complain about yet. Very fun game. Very fun.
Commentating is nice too.

fwiw, the commentary in 2k6 is about as horrible as I've heard in a recent sports game. Such a huge disappointment after the superb commentary in 2k5 :(. I miss the ESPN license.

NHL 06 has been a revival of my hockey game interests that I haven't had since 2002. They engine is great, but may need to be tweaked by some slider adjustments to satisfy your expectation of the game.

Commentary is better, Graphics are better, Fighting is better, Dynasty is better, Atmosphere is a lot better, not a lot of bugs in it (not yet)

The only thing I would give the 2k series an edge in is if you are looking for a really sim like experience right out of the box.

You mentioned the last game you played was Gretzky on N64.... Then NHL 06 is the one to get. You get the regular game, and also get a retro version of NHL94 (if you buy on PS2).

Bu-u-ump.... just wondering if anyone has any new input on this. I still haven't bought a hockey game this year 'cause I'm concerned about the reported lack of polish on 2K6, and I have a hard time putting much faith into EA.

Has anyone played both? Anyone had a change of heart about either title? Furthermore, any comparisons on PS2 vs. Xbox versions? (Button layouts, etc.) I'm thinking I might pick up PS2 version of 06 so I can download roster updates... don't have Xbox Live...

Dude just plunk the money down for one of them. The most you are going to be out of pocket is 33 bucks if you go with EA's version.... Even less for the NHL2k6 version..

I still proclaim NHL 06 to have the best fun factor of a hockey game in a long, long time. After some good amount of tweaking to EA's game, I am getting the game that I wanted (more hits, more penalties) in my franchise.

I'm loving NHL 06 with the sliders from OS for all the reasons Kingpic has stated already. Definately a breath of fresh air from the 2K series.

NHL 06 is pretty awesome this year. 2k has a bit better defensive play but the goalies are pretty stupid. 06 goalies flop a bit too much but they react better to wrap arounds and such.
Also after playing 06 the 2k game feels like the players are skating in mud. So slow.
