NHS surgeon who had his legs removed to satisfy sexual interest is jailed for fraud

Ok, I did not need to read that 🤮

Some people just need to stay off the internet and go for a fucking walk or drive though the country.

Some 'people' need to be thrown into a volcano and be unmade. The planet is infested by so many sickos.

Reviewing all of his amputation patients is going to be a grim task.

All the finger wagging disapproval over this, and yet it was cool when Prince had his procedure because wanted to suck himself off. Hypocrisy at it best.

I think there might be a bit of a difference between paying out of your own pocket to remove a couple of unimportant ribs and defrauding an insurance company to disable yourself, no?

One of the craziest aspects of this story was that this guy was seen as a hero ...

... and was on a shortlist to be sent into space as the first disabled astronaut....

A surgeon specialising in amputation, who lost both legs to sepsis, has made it to the shortlist to become an astronaut.
Neil Hopper, consultant vascular surgeon at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, defied advice and expectations by successfully returning to work.
He made the European Space Agency's shortlist for a para-astronaut but was then eliminated from the process.
He said: "I got far enough to start worrying that I might get through."

"The criteria were quite specific, you had to have a doctorate in engineering or medicine, you had to have a disability below the knee, and you had to speak a second language - hey, Welsh."
Mr Hopper said his wife Rachel thought he was "completely crazy".
He travelled to Hamburg to take part in the selection process which involved medical, personality, psychometric and memory tests.
He said: "I made it reasonably far through the programme but I didn't get selected in the end."
Mr Hopper has told his story, which includes a gruelling recovery and a return to helping patients with a new perspective, for a Welsh BBC documentary.
In the documentary, he explains how he had performed hundreds of amputations during his career when he lost both his legs to sepsis in 2019.

He added: "I remember imagining the operation - operations which I do all the time, and thinking that power tools were going to be used on me. That was really difficult to process."
In hospital for seven weeks, Mr Hopper said the physical changes were "fairly easy to understand", while the psychological changes and "fitting back into family life" were harder to grasp.
But with prosthetic legs came a glimmer of hope.

He added: "I was starting to think I'd never be able to go back to work, I'd never be able to play football with my son, walk the dog on the beach - that's the kind of mindset I had.
"But once I got legs, things started to change overnight, the future didn't look so bleak."
On reflection, he believes his experience and ability to relate to patients has made him a "better doctor", facilitating improvements to services throughout Devon and Cornwall.
The surgeon had been advised to reconsider his career, but he said: "I was determined to go back to work.
"I wanted to prove that they were completely wrong."

This guy still has his Youtube channel showing his recovery process (after willingly causing both his legs to be amputated).

Absolutely sick.

BTW I understand from the BBC article that this guy was married and had one or more children. It must be gruesome for his wife and children to support a husband/dad for years after he lost both his legs and then find out he lied to them for years and the whole traumatic ordeal for them was just a completely fucked up sexual fantasy to him.

BTW Neil Hopper got found out because of his connection with Marius Gustavson, the man behind the Eunuch Maker website.

Appearing at Truro Crown Court on Thursday, he pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud by false representation between 3 June and 26 June 2019.

He also admitted three charges of possessing extreme pornographic images, relating to videos by a website called the Eunuch Maker, where users paid for films of amputations and other extreme body modifications.

Judge James Adkin, the honorary recorder of Truro, heard Hopper was identified following investigations into Marius Gustavson who ran the site.

Gustavson was jailed for life with a minimum term of 22 years at the Old Bailey last year for leading an extreme body modification ring, which carried out male castration, penis removal and other procedures on people as young as 16.

The Norwegian national once cooked human testicles to eat in a salad, had his own penis removed with a kitchen knife and froze his own leg so it was amputated.

Gustavson netted more than £300,000 between 2017 and 2021 after posting videos of various procedures on his Eunuch Maker website.

Nicholas Lee, prosecuting, told the court that Hopper had bought three videos from the EunuchMaker.com website for £10 and £35, respectively, showing men willingly having their genitals removed.

He also exchanged around 1,500 messages with Gustavson about his own lower leg amputations and how he had done it, including asking how much dry ice he used.

"It is evident from the messages that Mr Hopper wished to become an amputee and it was always something he had dreamt of," Mr Lee said.

"Something he has been obsessed with and had a sexual interest in becoming an amputee."

Gustavson told Hopper he needed to immerse his legs in ice and dry ice for at "least eight hours" and would also require prescription painkillers, which he bought from the dark web.

Investigators later found Hopper had purchased 20kg of dry ice pellets on 14 April 2019. The following day he placed his feet in them at his home in St Erme while his wife and children were away.

While doing this he continued to message Gustavson, telling him: "It's going to be awesome being a double amputee."

Days later he was found unwell and taken to hospital, telling doctors who treated him for sepsis that he had been unwell with diarrhoea and vomiting. His feet were amputated on 10 May, before surgeons carried out a further operation to remove his legs below the knees a week later.

He later took a photo of his bandaged feet and sent it to Gustavson with the message: "It feels so cool. No feet!"

Andrew Langdon KC, mitigating, told the court Hopper had grown up in a rural village in Wales and felt he was in the wrong body from a young age.

"He was troubled by his gender, he wanted to be female," Mr Langdon said, adding that his client identified with body integrity identity disorder and those with a desire to amputate one or more healthy limbs.

Hopper experienced "persistent, never ending" thoughts about having his feet amputated before he decided to cause "irreversible damage to his legs".

"He knows in the days and weeks that followed, he let himself down in the most shameful way," Mr Langdon said.

The barrister said Hopper insists his thoughts and behaviour have not had an impact on his job and he always tried his best for his patients.

Damn. That space walk would have been a doozy.

Make fun or pity him all you want, but it's not any different than being trans. He didn't feel right in his own skin so he wanted to modify himself into his "authentic being".

The surgeon who wilfully amputated this guy's perfectly fine legs should go to jail too.
The guys legs weren't fine; he deliberately froze his legs with dry ice to ensure his legs legitimately required amputation.
The guy essentially got done for insurance fraud as he claimed his legs were amputated due to them being septic; the insurance company who paid out the insurance eventually found out the reason for the amputation was actually due to self inflicted injuries, not an actual case of sepsis.

It's a variant of Munchausen Syndrome, where folks injure themselves or fake symptoms for some other gain.

Had a patient we thought had it once. Really beautiful lady, just stunning, but she had this big wound on her thigh that would always open up and get infected, requiring admission. She seemed to really groove on the attention, so the docs though she was deliberately messing with it instead of taking the antibiotics and dressing it properly, called us in to psych eval her. Seemed bizarre that she would do it, as she could walk into any bar and get immediately swarmed, but that's why it is an illness.

This is a really interesting story, not just because the guy is a weird freak and it makes me think about how our society went astray. But because he got in trouble for defrauding an insurance company. If he just decided to payout of pocket, and if he found a doctor willing to do it (sadly, probably not that hard), there would be no problem.

That wasn't how it happened.

Hopper got busted as part of the police inquiry into active members of the Eunuch Maker website. He'd posted thousands of messages there and had been in touch with the (now convicted) owner of that site and had bought gruesome videos from that site. The police were able to identify him and that's how the ball got rolling.

I'm confused. It sounds like he necrosed his legs by freezing them, thereby needing bilat amputation to stay alive. I feel the insurance company should have to cover for life saving surgery regardless of what caused his necrosis? Clearly the guy is mentally deranged...

The insurance company is essentially saying Fuck him, He did this, let him die ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: never mind it looks like they gave him a check for half a million pounds? I don't understand why though

Imagine if we started identifying as "people with no legs" and incentivize this sort of insanity. It still wouldn't be as shocking as the doctors who keep mutilating children on a regular basis worldwide, unchecked and incentivized by barbarians, who deserve everything that will eventually catch up to them.

If I freeze my legs, like I get trapped outside in the snow, and I need to get amputation, then yea that's covered. But not if I freeze my legs so they get amputated to satisfy some weird fetish. He lied and claimed it was medically necessary and justified it by hurting himself. That is fraud. The insurance company is in the right to try to get the money back. It's like setting your house on fire to collect the insurance. Yes your policy covers a loss in case of fire, but not if you start the fire.

I mean, that makes sense, but I feel like we can all make sense of someone trying to burn their house down in order to collect a payout... But burning your legs off so you can say "How cool is this? Look! No feet!" just seems like a totally different wheelhouse 😂
