Thanks alot.

The restaurant bar next to the Hyatt on Sunset. You might just catch Eliza Dushku riding the mechanical bull they have set up in there.

Your programmer was stupid.

Downtown:

Little Tokyo -- Try Shabu Shabu House (127 Japanese Village Plaza Mall, Los Angeles, CA 90012-3908)

Philippes (The Original French Dip sandwich) in Chinatown.

East:

Griffith Park and the view from the Griffith Observatory.

Central/Hollywood:

The Arclight featuring the historic Cinerama Dome.

Next door: Amoeba Records one of the best record stores in the country.

The 3rd and Fairfax Farmer's Market and The Grove next door.

Melrose between Fairfax and LaBrea for funky clothes, hip-hop record shopping and people watching.

The I Am 8-Bit art show will be in the Melrose area starting Thursday April 19th.

Hollywood and Highland: Tourist trappy, but home of The Grauman's Chinese -- arguably one of the best theaters in the country.
Meltdown Comics and awesome comics and collectables store.

I'm not a huge fan of the West side of town, but Santa Monica and the Promendade are a good place to kill time and check out the ocean (the pier is right there.)

try and find one of the surviving Pioneer Chicken restaurants

I'd go to Roscoes. The Pioneers (at least the one by my house in Silverlake) aren't half as good as they used to be.

Agreed. I have evidence.

Hell Looks a Lot Like LA by Less Than Jake

Got in his car and he told himself to drive
gotta leave it all behind if he wants to feel alive
yeah, 19 and lost, never thought he'd ever leave this place
vacant mind from endless grind so what's to lose anyways
another fast food job?
another 8 to 5 day?

Ten minutes and two miles, it's just a mile too many today
you can see why it's easy to say
you know that hell looks a lot like L.A.

Six months ago was the last she felt alive
moved down from the north and told herself she'd try
yeah, 18 and lost, never thought this place would change
ignored and bored, the same feelings as yesterday
she said it's way too much more than she could take

Ten minutes and two miles, it's just a mile too many today
you can see why it's easy to say
one less car that's in the way
you know that hell looks a lot like L.A.

Ten minutes and two miles, it's just a mile too many today
you can see why it's easy to say
hell looks a lot like L.A.

As much as I fucking hate the city, I'll still be there for E3. It's worth braving that hellhold of a place for E3.

Contemplating Hell - Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956)

Contemplating Hell, as I once heard it,
My brother Shelley found it to be a place
Much like the city of London. I,
Who do not live in London, but in Los Angeles,
Find, contemplating Hell, that it
Must be even more like Los Angeles.

Also in Hell,
I do not doubt it, there exist these opulent gardens
With flowers as large as trees, wilting, of course,
Very quickly, if they are not watered with very expensive water. And fruit markets
With great leaps of fruit, which nonetheless

Possess neither scent nor taste. And endless trains of autos,
Lighter than their own shadows, swifter than
Foolish thoughts, shimmering vehicles, in which
Rosy people, coming from nowhere, go nowhere.
And houses, designed for happiness, standing empty,
Even when inhabited.

Even the houses in Hell are not all ugly.
But concern about being thrown into the street
Consumes the inhabitants of the villas no less
Than the inhabitants of the barracks.

:lol Seriously, I always found it cool how the Spurs/Lakers playoff matchups coincided with E3 week the last few years. Would've been a great excuse to stay in LA for a week or two, despite of some of those results. :lol

Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles on Gower, right off Sunset.

A couple of my gangsta' aquaintances are getting together during E3 week and plan on preying on E3 nerds, especially those toting iPods; so watch out!.

Am staying at the Roosevelt across from the Chinese Theater and am looking forward to spending peanuts on the train - but getting out to Santa Monica always seems to take ages. Am I better off renting a car?

I'm in Los Angeles today... it smells like an airport runway. jet fuel stenches in the cabin and lights flickering at random.

I'm in Los Angeles today... garbage cans comprise the medians of freeways always creaping even when the population's sleeping.

And I can't see why you'd want to live here.

I'm in Los Angeles today... asked a gas station employee if he ever had trouble breathing and he said "it varies from season to season, kid."

It's where our best are on display... motion picture actors' houses maps are never ever current so save your film and $15.

And I can't see why you'd want to live here.

Billboards reach past the tallest buildings, "we are not perfect but we sure try." As UV rays "degradate" our youth with time.

The vessel keeps pumping us through this entropic place in the belly of the beast that is californ-i-a, I drank from a faucet and i kept my receipts for when they weigh me on my way out (here nothing is free). The greyhounds keep coming dumping locusts into the street until the gutters overflow and los angeles thinks, "i might explode someday soon."

It's a lovely summer's day and I can almost see a skyline through a thickening shroud of egos. (is this the city of angeles or demons?) Here the names are what remain... stars encapsulate the gold lame and they need constant cleaning for when the tourists begin salivating. You can't swim in a town this shallow - you will most assuredly drown tomorrow.

There are tons of great places to visit in and around L.A. Southern California is a wonderfully diverse place, where you can hit the beach or go snowboarding within an hour or two's drive.

Those of you downing it probably haven't ventured outside of Downtown or Hollywood, which is too bad. The downtown area of almost every city is a less than scenic place, what do you expect?

L.A. hate cracks me up. In 100 years the whole country is going to be like L.A. If you don't want that to happen, you'd better do more than complain.

i don't mind la hate from people who live in new york. but la hate from people who live in minneapolis or houston or something strikes me as received and false. and hating los angeles because it's fake is like hating hawaii because it's covered with beaches.

In 100 years we more than likely won't be here, but if anyone gets that lucky they'll be too old to care. To be honest, I don't want to know what the world will be like 100 years from now. 10 or 20 is scary enough.

People, please stay the fuck out of LA.
That means more women, jobs and less traffic for the rest of us who enjoy living here..

Amen, Lil' Dice.

I forgot to mention arcades:

LA has a fine selection of busted up, arcades in bad neigborhoods.

Pak-Mann
1775 E Colorado Blvd
Pasadena, CA 91106
(626) 449-2834

College Arcade and Family Arcade (stay away from these two if you're afraid if LA, ese)
862 n. vermont ave
Los Angeles, CA 90029

Sassony Arcade
Downtown on Broadway a couple blocks South of Cliftons Cafeteria.

This one's close to E3, but closer to skid row. Again, chickens might not want to venture there. I have a soft spot for this place because the games are in such disrepair. It's a little like the island of misfit toys.

There's also an arcade in Westwood. I don't go there much, but I heard its pretty good.

I also forgot to mention Barcade, a cool speakeasy that allows smoking and is filled with video games. It's only open on tuesday nights at a secret location.

There's some excellent suggestions in this thread. In fact, I live here, and I'm gonna take down some of these for future reference.

Anyway, if you hit it off with one of the booth girls at E3, impress her with a hike of Runyan Canyon. She'll honestly never forget it. Or you could just go with some of your co-nerds, too. Almost as good.

Good thread, can someone mention some decent game stores in LA?

Are you looking for one that sells vintage games as well as new ones?
There's a shop called Game Dude in North Hollywood, just don't go there trading anything, you'll get the shaft.

If you're looking for an EB, the one in Universal City Walk is the best EB i've ever seen.

I'm going to also have to raise a hand on Phillipes. Also Mitsura (I believe) in the Tokyo Village is quite awesome.

Santa Monica is my neck of the woods so anyone on the West coast needs some advice of where ro go I have plenty of suggestions.

Yeah, on Broxton. It's smallish, and the games are probably too new for your tastes, if it's anything like it was when I was there last.
I used to go there before premiere screenings, (at the Fox and Bruin down the street) but the last one I bothered to get a pass for was Spider-man 2.
