Niche RPGs = Low Print Runs

The End

In the next month or two there's going to be a minor flood of niche RPGs released for the PS2. Being that they'll have relatively small print runs, it would probably be easier to pick them up sooner rather than later. Between Atelier Iris, Digital Devil Saga, and Stella Deus, which are actually worth the full price of admission?

If you liked Shin Megami Tensai, then DDS would be a good bet

I've alredy preordered DDS and paid for it..

Probably gonna buy both Stella Deus and Atelier Iris too..

I thought I read somewhere that \Pinegrow (Stella Deus developer) used to be Maxfive (Hoshigami developer) and they actually had some significant ex-Quest staff (Ogre developer)? Any of this true?

I have a bad feeling that I'll end up buying all of the games in the parent poster's list, at full retail price. Aside from the occasional round of DDR, I've been playing nothing but RPGs/SRPGs so far this year, and that looks as if it'll continue for some time.

I've heard from various sources that Nippon Ichi doesn't really give a shit about the quality or accuracy of their localizations, so I'm gonna pass on buying any of their games. I refuse to support companies that insist on remaining in the stone age when it comes to bringing titles over from Japan.

In the interest of full disclosure, i loved Nocturne and the Persona games, so i already have DDS pre-ordered.

I'm really just curious as to the quality of Atelier Iris and Stella Deus, because i know if i don't pick them up right away, i'm going to have some trouble finding them later.

so they didn't give you the time of day?

I kid, I kid...

The translation for Phantom Brave was about on par with the job Atlus did for Disgaea.

Wild Arms next month may be a low print run. I'm probably going to get that since I think Atlus is distributing it, not SCEA. So it may be a lot more harder to find. Thats probably it for me. DDS sounds like its tough and therefore, not for me.

Agetec is doing Wild Arms: Alter Code F, not Atlus or SCEA. Hopefully SCEA goes for Wild Arms 4 though, it looks great.

I've never heard of this. As far as I know, most of the ex-Quest staff moved to Square.

And in either case, the Hoshigami hate is a joke. Those haters must not be big SRPG aficionados.

That means its probably going to be even more tough to find. I imagine someone will pick up Wild Arms 4, whether it be SCEA, Atlus, or Agetec. I enjoyed the third one.

Not only that, I think Stella Deus is a sequel or something to Hoshigami.

Stella Deus = Latin = Star God
Hoshigami = Japanese = Star God

I'm getting DDS and Ateleir Elie though.

That's sad to hear.

Just Digital Devil Saga for me, I don't want to miss out, but it may be a while before I get to it :/

Iris is too fey animu for me, so I'll skip it unless it ends up going for $80 on Ebay, and Stella Deus is supposedly Hoshigami II, so that one's a no as well. I might get DDS, but only if it's really something

assuming they're spaced out by a couple weeks, sure.
Yeah, same here. I need to give my wallet a little bit of time to recover. :lol

Atelier supposedly comes out on April 5th.
Stella Deus: May 4
DDS: March 29th.
Then again, all of these could change very easily.

Was Atelier Iris bad? Based on Bebpo's impressions, I don't think I'll pick up DDS now.

:(

DDS is challenging but because it's challenging it's also very satisfying. Story is really really interesting so you should give it a try at least. If you don't like it you can sell it used in a couple of months when it becomes rare.

Unless of course you hated the gameplay of SMT3, then I wouldn't bother with DDS.

and Atelier is still shrinkwrapped in my backlog, so that's why I can't speak for it.

I found it pretty damn good; there's not anything even close to "A Winner is You" bad in it.

SMT: DDS; check.
Atelier Iris; probably.
Stella Deus: OMGWTF Sakimota and Iwata doing the OST for another SRPG!!!!!!111 Er, I mean, check. :lol

Can't speak for the other games, but I'm really enjoying Digital Devil Saga right now. Got my press copy in last week, ended up pulling an all-nighter Saturday night playing it.

Its's also been kind of funny watching people's reactions to the character design. My g/f nearly flipped when she saw one of my party member's boobs start to roar and growl during her transformation.

I don't think I ever *got* SMT's battle system. I went
right up to the first fight with Dante and kept getting my ass kicked, so I pretty much stopped there.
What turned me off was that you said (at least, I think it was you), that the story in DDS is not as good as Nocturne's... or something.

DDS is was originally billed as being the cutscene/voice-acting filled story driven companion to last years SMTIII, yet ironically SMTIII is probably the one that's the more story focused of the two.

Yeah, that's it.

Well, DDS1 is kinda story-light/dungeon-heavy because it's really only a small part of the whole tale.

DDS2 has a lot more cutscenes and is definitely more story heavy than SMT3.

After your DDS review, there was no way I could possibly skip on it. Definetly looking forward to your DDS 2 review.
