Please oh please explain to me how Yamanaka Chihiro has no soul. As a jazz musician myself I would really like to know. Because it sounds to me that she has soul.

I wasn't feeling it either.

I just gave it a listen and she doesn't have soul. It's kind of hard describe was soul is. More interesting dynamics would help for one.

I only know when something has soul when I can hear it. It's something that I feel. If you're born a square, you'll never understand what soul is. It doesn't how many hours of practice you put in-- you'll always be a square.

I didn't say she has no soul, I said that the track you pick "has no soul" Only because she is skill, doesn't mean every track she does is good(Just like Nicki)She has better tracks. Let me guess, you do Free Jazz...Right????

That's what I'm talking about...Not that random freestyle shit.

Back when Nicki Minaj was still on the mixtape circuts 4 years ago I was actually a fan; She had a smooth yet colorful delivery, her lyrics where simple but she had the charisma and presence to make up for it. I thought she had the talent to get big, but it was obvious through her music she was trying to come up with the right gimmick to blow up with; I never thought she would become so over the top though, it's unbearable now. The make up, the obnoxiously over the top flow, painfully cheesy and simple lyrics, the plastic surgery- it's too much.

She is still really pretty to me, but I think Nicki looks alot better dressed down, without a shitload of make-up, and her body looks better without the "enhancements" she got.

I think you might be confused.

Improvisation is an essential part of Jazz. "Free Jazz" is something completely different than what you're thinking of.

Free Jazz was part of the Black Awareness movement in the 60's. Essentially, The free Jazz movement wanted to rid Jazz of it's strongest European Influence--Western Tonality. That Japanese girl was not playing free Jazz.

She looks like a boring Foxy brown imitator. And she sounded like one too.

That old Nicki Minaj doens't sell out stadiums. Then New Nicki Minaj does. Thank God you're not her A&R otherwise she probably still be a broke mixtape rapper.

Huh? What the hell are you talking about...Free Jazz is Sun Ra and shit, not some Black Awareness movement...Early recordings of free jazz was from Django Reinhardt. And two, I was asking homeboy if he did free Jazz. Three, I never said she did free jazz, just saying her shit is random.

I know what soul is, at least as much as anyone else knows what soul is, which is very little seeing as it's an entirely subjective descriptor. If I said "it has soul" then your argument is basically about as null as mine, because you can't exactly prove that she doesn't as much as I can't prove that she does. But I know better than to declare my opinion on an entirely subjective element of performance and listening in such a matter.

I also dispute your "once a square, always a square" position, as if people can't learn to be a better reflection of their own selves through music. That's a very pessimistic attitude and runs very contrary to the entire notion of honing one's craft. In fact, I don't see how anyone can overcome any sort of adversity with an attitude like that.

There's not a single element of that that's random. I am absolutely certain that she knew what she was doing. If she didn't, her ability to form lines by accident is truly transcendent.

EDIT: To answer your question, I compose free/avant-garde jazz, but I don't play it. I suppose that's a strange sentence. As a composer and arranger I find it easier to express myself through less restricted means, but in improvisational context I would rather play something more grounded in western harmony.

Another EDIT: Free jazz is barely a movement. Early free jazz is just freaky bop. Most of the "free jazz" from the late fifties is indistinguishable stylistically from, say, Davis recordings where they refused to stick to a tempo. It only really became a tangible thing when it started incorporating collective improvisation elements (see Coltrane's Ascension; not the first example but probably the most well-known), and it had less to do with harmony -- although it definitely had a little to do with harmony -- and more to do with breaking band and song structure conventions. The most resilient characteristic of free jazz is the notion of multiple musicians improvising collectively to produce a single creation.

I would describe the feeling that comes from a thick and powerful free groove as the most "soulful" thing I've ever identified in my time performing music. There's just something else to spontaneously building off of the creations of your fellow man.

What? She dressed like any other girl in the hood at the time, and I wasn't addressing whether or not her style was commercially viable, just how she looks. She didn't sound like a Foxy Brown clone at all neither, she was closer to Lil Kim than anybody, though there are more apt comparisons to be made.

How is that attractive? I don't get it. She seems like she migh thave a pretty face, but I can't tell because she oddly gyrates her ass so close to the camera. It's distracting.

I never understood the "Dat Ass" stuff. I guess am I boob guy.

Imagine her riding you reverse cowgirl and you get to stare at that ass going up and down on your dick while you slap it. Do you get it now?

Rebecca Black is better than this pile of horse wank, shit is barely even music.
Minaj is a dog too.

You serious bro, that was a fucking amazing performance.

This isn't even remotely close to free jazz, which I find pretty hard to listen to.

Sure, it's appalling and an affront to ears all over the world, but...it's no worse than what Lady Gaga and Katy Perry has been getting away with the past few years.

I'll admit that Lady Gaga has had a few weird songs (Judas, Edge of Glory) but what Minaji has here I can barely consider music. Then again, I haven't listened to the song without the music video, and the video is just atrocious.

At least Lady Gaga and Katy Perry didn't make me want to stab my ears and eyes. :S

I see how people can view Minaj's stuff as garbage but I also understand how one can be entertained by what she does. For me watching Niki Minaj is kinda like going to the circus. Over the top ridiculous and wild shit that's not to be taken seriously whatsoever.

I shouldn't be judging considering some of the shit I listen to.. I'm just surprised this can be accepted in the mainstream. Good for her is she can find success with this wacky formula.

Speaking to the lyrics, I agree 100%. The lyrics aside, this song is the .... I guess you could call it rap equivilent of having to watch Courtney Love.

nah... doesn't do anything for me. The image of her bouncy her butt seems more bestial and disgusting to me than something beautiful and feminine.

The Shape of her butt isn't appealing to me either. I'm just not going to get it....ever.

She's like the black Lady Gaga, but hotter and crazier.

This video is definitely the new rickroll though.

I'll admit that seeing Minaj in that cage at the end of the video moved me....
below my waist.
