As a black guy, I'm becoming more confused about the use of the word nigger on the radio. Everybody uses it. And not in a 1960's-type-of-hate-all-black-people (except, in a lot of ways, too many people hate black people). I remember having a white guy in high school that everybody just considered black and he was able to use it. But now, everybody uses it. I wonder if we'll ever get to the point where the word just changes it's meaning by how society overuses it. It has already lost most of it's meaning. But will it get to the point where regular white people use it talking to each other and black people and it won't be a big deal?
For instance, on this board, there was a time just writing it would have resulted in a ban. Now, it's prominently displayed in a subject line. Of coarse, moderation has, in ways, become more lenient. But even on GA, you can see a difference.

For anyone that watches the real world last season there was an episode where one of the White dudes was telling a story where someone said the word nigger. So he had to say the word because it was a key point of the story. The black dude on the show got angry that he used the word even in that context. To me thats just a little ridiculous. But that guy had more problems though.
Let me throw this out there. Allot of black people on TV, Music, and Film use the word nigger. If they are going to use it, eventually its going to become common and open for other people to use it. I cannot remember the last time I actually heard it as a derogatory term being said by a white guy to a black guy. Heck, even CNN censors the word.

If it is such an acceptable word then why don't we just shop it arond so we can put it on legal documents.

And to why he can "get away with it" is simple. Do you really think he is getting away with anything? Clear Channel and any number of mega media conglomorate could refuse to spin the record if they chose to. But, those in the business community don't care what the listeners get out of the music as long as the music gets the money out of the listener.

Around where I live, "nigger" has seems to have become an all-purpose insult to people of any race, used by stupid high-schoolers primarily.
My sister, who is a vulgar little 15 year old brat uses that word as an insult all the time. Her white and mexican friends do it, too.
This really confuses me. Anyone else noticed this where they live?
