Nintendo DS download play= sucks balls

So I finally tried out the 1 cart download play on my DS's the other day. I was with a group of people (non gamers) at a bar enjoying "picto-chat" and everyone was freaking out over it, especially the girls.

Anyways I made the mistake of saying "hey lets try out 2 player games!" Turned off picto and started the download play option. First there was a "communication error" or whatever so had to restart.

Then after what seemed like forever (at least 5 minutes from turning on the DS's to start of gameplay) 1/2 of my friends had moved on the normal conversation/phone calls/drinking/mingling.

Also I dont know if this is a bug or not, but when I tried out 2 player Mr. Driller one of the DS's didnt have sound.

Overall download play left a bad taste in my mouth....

hmm. owned? sounds like bs

this is from DS.ign review

Playing Driller race with another player is perhaps too simple for its own good, and its requirement of a copy of the game for each player is more than a little disappointing. Considering the simplistic nature of the game design and graphics, and considering that Namco's other, more technical game -- Ridge Racer DS supports single cartridge multiplayer mode, its absence in Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits is just a little suspicious.

sounds like there isn't that mode in US driller unless he's playing the jap edition (then I dunno).

make sure the unit with the game begins transmitting before the other units begin looking.

I played 3 player MarioDS with only one card and there wasn't any problem. the DL time was > 1 minute but no more than 2.

Actually Mr. Driller loads alot faster than Mario 64, but I had the sound problem. Plus the Mr. Driller 2 player game is not so fun or deep. I can go and time how long it takes to download play but im sure it is closer to 5 minutes than it is to 2.

thats fine, I am not saying it did not take you that long, I was just providing a similarly anecdotal story about how long it took to boot up for me.

Actually instead of starting a new thread about a similar topic, I tried out FF:CC 3 player the other day also with my non-gaming friends. I swear it took almost 30 minutes from the start screen, intro CGI and song (awesome song btw!), cutscenes, training until we actually starting dungeon crawling/fighting.

By that time my 2 friends where literally 1/2 asleep. Gaming really needs to lose all the time filler BS or at least have a "skip all the bullshit and get to the game"-button.

What? FF:CC:DS is out? Or do your friends suck at picking out characters?

Man, single cart play is awesome. The alternative is multi cart play. Do you want everyone to have to own the cart to play? Sure, that's fine too... but the fact that there's the ability to multi without that is so cool.

So suck it up!

I think he's talking about GC version ..

but what do u expect from square, they love making some game/movie hybrid thing, even their GBA games have some really boring cut scenes

So? They're still better than 90% of the usual crap that releases on portables, and it's not like including a plot in their games keeps them from having 30+ hours of gameplay

The download time depends on each game by the way.

Mario 64 and Ridge Racer DS takes only ten seconds or so. But Band Brothers takes close to 30 seconds, just don't forget to turn on Wireless in the options menu before you begin to send the data (for Band Brothers, which is curcial or download could take five minutes).

Also, what game were you sending for download?

Horror as gamer using console to impress chicks backfires!

Can someone else with the Japanese Mr. Driller confirm or deny the "5 minute" single cart transfer time?

While it's still pathetic, I could see Namco USA opting to axe the single cart mode if they thought the lengthy load times made the game look bad.

Mario 64 DS- 1:26
Mr. Driller Spirits- 0:54

ooops. User error, I guess I had too many beers and got lazy with reading the japanese...

carry on.

I was at a bonenkai and we had one DS running pictochat at each of the four tables. Initially the DS's wouldn't identify each other. Took about 3 minutes for them to "see" the other units >:(

For Driller, it's nowhere near 5 mins. I tried it yesterday. It's less than a minute, I'd bet.

Also, you have to hit a button to make it finish. That got me the first time I tried Mario...

Denied. Anyone who takes five minutes to transfer obviously can't read the Japanese. :p They probably spent four of those minutes sitting there staring at the screen not realizing they had to press a button to continue.

It didn't get into the US version because it was still buggy at the time Namco USA needed to submit the game to NOA in order to make launch. The funny thing is, they still missed launch anyway (heh).

*ding ding ding!*

Three easy steps to suck at the internet:

Step 1: dont make sure the DS unit with the game begins transmitting before the other units begin looking

Step 2: dont press the A button on the sending DS

Step 3: rush to post doom and gloom on internet message board

I must be nuts, but the top girl looks much more appealing than the bottom one.

Of course, I go for nerdish girls who read large tomes.

Oh I know. I actually was aiming for the "below average fat chick" not the "so horrible you need to invest in new eyes fat chicks."

First chick looks fine to me. Maybe some of you fellas spend too much time looking at the perfect anime girls on your computer or something to realize what real chicks look like. I'm not saying she's a beauty queen, but geez.
