As reported in the latest Game Informer, referencing that Miyamoto revealed it is working with Square for an online title for the Nintendo DS. Also in the last EGM there was reported a major surprise in the pipeline for DS. Anyone know anything about this, what game Nintendo is working with Square on, and if it has to do with a bigger plan or part of a bigger surprise mentioned in EGM?

Has anyone heard of that 2-D korean MMORPG Ragnorok Online? I figure that's what a Final Fantasy Online DS could look like. Ultima Online would be another good example (in concept, but not art)
Maybe the big surprise is that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles will be online enabled, though. That would be huge.

ps. yes, i've played ragnarok. a 2-D/3-D MMORPG of that type on the DS would rock my house and would make me buy one immmediately also.

FFXI DS could be a very dangerous thing. Imagine having people walking around town playing a MMORPG all the time. :lol

If a MMORPG came out for a portable I could just see people sitting on a bus riding it over and over again until the route ends and the busdriver forces them to get off.. to which they reply "we'll just crash here.. I'm like this close to leveling up again and then I can stat boost my map reading skills and equip this things so I can actually see enemies on the map"

No, all he said was that users and investors aren't on the same level. They could mean a really high user interest, with investor interest very low. Or it could be anything inbetween those extremes.

If Nintendo and Square were able to release a good MMORPG for DS in the near future, in the same vein as UO or Lineage, I think it would give them a big step up on the PSP.
Hey, they could even make it simple 3D environments with sprite characters... that way you could fit a decent amount of peeps onscreen... or they could do it all Phantasy Star Online stylee... I'd still dig it.
I could see myself resurrecting my AC / AO addiction in that form...

A MMORPG for DS or PSP would be a blast. I'd love to see something like this come out for either system. My only concerns would be the constant changes that go on in MMORPGs with balancing issues, cheat fixes, etc. How would those types of things be saved on the DS or PSP to reflect the changes? Larger memory cards I suppose?

If they made FFXI on the DS, and it sorta looked the way it did on the PS2, and they utilized the stylus to write text to other players, that would kick all sorts of ass. No stopping to type something. You could be in battle, and just quickly write something to your team member without breaking the battle. Also, I would want to be able to connect to existing servers so I can get on with friends who have the PS2 or PC version. It would actually make me get back into the game.

Plus, I think to cram the whole world of Vana'diel on a cart or UMD, you'd have to do a 2D representation of the 3D world, or take a major graphical hit in 3D. I could see macros being very doable with the DS touch screen.

That's the million dollar question. Not only is there lots of potential for lag and networking issues, but storage, updates, availabilty of a wireless signal and communication are big issues too.
Sony Online Entertainment manage to fit every patch into the same 3MB save file for EQOA on PS2, which was quite a little feat considering the amount of updates, changes and what were added/unlocked, so perhaps storage isn't all that big of an issue if you're using old DC/PC "download/unlock" trickery.
Communication on PSP is iffy. I've seen the "keyboard" and its not only dinky, but also mispositioned on the unit. A touch screen like DS has is much more flexable. Voice could be possible on either, especially DS since a mic is built in, but pointless considering potential lag, so text is much better.
Out and about in America, portable MMORPG play for either unit would be questionable. Wi-Fi hubs and things like it are only just now starting to crop up and are still few and far between. Lots of businesses and even fast food places like McDonalds are getting in on it, but still, that growth will take time and its probably more plausible for the Japanese market than here in the US since we're all so spread out.

Well, for what it's worth (and this is only wild speculation), the new generation of consoles could open up some interesting possibilities here. If we're talking DS/Revolution, I imagine it's pretty obvious that they'll talk to each other wirelessly - walk near an online console anywhere, you're online - no need for a wireless router (this would be over that proprietary protocol to limit the security concerns). I imagine that you'd also have other options if you own a console version of the game, like the console version launches and you can continue play seemlessly on the console using the DS as a controller. Who knows if any of this will actually happen, of course, but if it did the DS would become a pretty handy accessory to Revolution, and vice-versa. I imagine PS3/PSP could do something similar, either wirelessly or at least through USB 2.0. As I said, wild speculation, but it's fun to speculate.Odnetnin said:

There already is an official online (peer-to-peer) version of the FF8 card game. It was included with FFVIII Desktop Accessories, a collection of FF8 screensavers and clip-art and stuff sold for PC in Japan.
