Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

So what is the prevailing theory why Nintendo held back showing their powerhouse titles and the lack of games by third parties being presented?

Dev kits had something extra not expected?
Nintendo doesn't know how to make HD games?

Here is my theory regarding Nintendo: they saw the Sony and MS press conference and didn't feel threatened. There was a chance that either of them would show something regarding their next consoles, but that didnt happen, and a lot of content shown was already known, or sequels to running franchises. So Nintendo showed the bare minimum. And what they did show, even cartoony games like Nintendoland, were titles with deep gameplay. There really wasn't the simple WiiSports title to attract casuals.

Im sure many think they have lost their way, but I think Nintendo is rope-a-doping.

A lot of fans might be pissed off right now, but Nintendo knows fans have short memories, and when they show them the goods, later on this year, they will get them back

.

The fans just wanted one big hardcore single player online 1080 HD no motion game

Third Parties? Who gives a stuff really on Nintendo consoles

Not even Assassin's 3 has much interest

Do you think we'll ever have a moment comparable to this?
Well we might when Wii U bombas terribly.

But that was when everyone had silently written off Nintendo, because Gamecube was petering off going into last place.

And suddenly the Hulk enters the stage, kicks everyone's ass, takes all their names and shows off tons of awesomeness, games, a new console called Revolution, and it ended with the Twilight Princess reveal.

It doesn't get better than E3 2004 for any console manufacturer. Laughably amateuristic when you look back now, but oh well.

Yep, it takes almost nothing for Nintendo to appease Nintendo fans. It's like Activision not being able to make the core COD collective happy. Show some pew-pew-pew with cool explosions and they can go home. It doesn't have to look good, or competitive, or interesting, the fans are that easy to please.

All Nintendo had to do was show a 3d mario or a 3d zelda or smash bros with graphics that were more or less 360/PS3 equivalent at the end of the show and it would have been megatons/game of the show/I'll buy Wii U for 1000 dollars!/ omg nintendo is back/ my body is ready/etc!

They said 26 games. They also said 26 games at the conference yesterday. They're showing the same games as yesterday.

Unless you're in Alternate Universe #628. That's a nice place to be.

didn't they say 23 games at the conference? and aren't there 3 games on Nintendo's Wii U Facebook page still unrevealed?

Am I overthinking this?

23 at conference then the Platinum reveal shortly after, leaves two titles.

My moneys on two Wii U games being tacked on to the 3DS show later today.

but there are three secret games on the Wii U facebook page.
besides, if you're counting Platinum's game then there's also the new Wario Ware

secret games on their wii u facebook page? Is that even possible? Wasn't it IGN that had them on their youtube site, but was that really for wii u?

go to the Wii U page on facebook, scroll down to May 30th. Notice the comments continue right until now, and the games are not revealed anywhere on the page since then.

Alternate Universe #628 post:

Huh, game 2 is "Wave Racers". The water looks pretty and all, but that's not really my sort of thing. I like how it involves racing from island to island instead of on a more fixed path like the earlier Wave Race games had.

Oh, shit, turbo boost jumps off of those weird conical bouys is pretty rad, though. I liked how flying into that flock of birds caused it to really naturally break up. Some crazy detail here. It'd be nice, though, if they had a racer more attuned for this landlubber here. :)

Back in our reality: I've warmed up to Zombi U (the actual Game 2), since finding out that (A) Zombi was an Ubisoft game from 1986, and I like nostalgic callouts like that; and (B) the actual game is an exploration-based shooter with old fashioned RE survival horror elements as well as '90s style medpacks and keycards (that is to say, the mechanic of "the playfield gradually expands in size as you explore instead of just being functionally one long tunnel) and a conspicuous lack of two-gun limits and the horrible, horrible "duck-to-heal" plague that has taken over modern shooters like a horde of zombies.

Those were obviously Pikmin 3, Mario U, Nintendo Land.

In other news, reggie on the retro studios:

IGN: Switching gears, because I'm getting bombarded on Twitter to ask this... Everyone wants to know what Retro is up to. It's been a couple of years since we really heard from them. When will we hear from them?

Fils-Aime: Rich, if I disclosed what Retro is doing, I would have the president of Retro literally calling me right now saying, "Reggie, what are you doing?" We love that people are interested. We love surprising people. I remember getting the questions before we announced Donkey Kong Country Returns. And I loved unveiling that. So... Rest assured, the team is hard at work. But I'm not gonna tell you what they're working on.

Whether they said 23 or 26 games at the conference. Does anyone have a list of 23 or 26 Wii U games?

Because I swear I only saw about 12 Wii U games yesterday.... OK maybe 16 games...

and 8 were from Ubisoft

no reason to be cynical, it's an honest question. Explain to me where I'm wrong and I'll forget about the Facebook thing.

How am I being cynical? I have no idea why Nintendo hasn't done something with their Facebook page. I don't update Nintendo's Facebook page. I don't read Nintendo's Facebook page. I don't use Facebook. I have no idea if they'll announce more games or not. I also don't really care, to be honest. Whether they announce games here or later, the stuff they have in development is still going to come out.

They said 23 games at the conference, they showed 23 games. Since the conference they've shown 3 more games. That's 26. If there are 26 boxes on a Facebook page, well, that's one box for every game. Or 3 games aren't listed and there are 3 secret mystery games to be unveiled. I don't really know or care.

have at it guys

The full Wii reveal at E3 2006 was actually fantastic compared to most press conferences and especially the full reveal of the Wii U.

- A highlight reel showing loads of new games
- Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (how a core game can use the Wii remote and nunchuck)
- First Metroid Prime 3 footage
- First Super Mario Galaxy footage
- On stage Red Steel presentation (ok the game didn't turn out great but at the time it was an exclusive Wii fps using the new control scheme for the first time)
- On stage Wii Sports battle (showed off the controller fantastically well and didn't need a 15 minute long explanation)

This got everyone excited for the console. Compare that with the Wii U.

Nintendo knew games like Metroid Prime 3 and Galaxy wouldn't be ready for launch but they still showed them and in playable form. They built anticipation of what was to come and gave you confidence that if you bought the Wii at launch, the next year would have some great games coming as well.

Dont forget the ssbb reveal

You mean the post that says:

Guess what the initial game releases will be for Nintendo’s new home console, Wii U? Soon we’ll scratch off to reveal the names!

Why would 'initial' suddenly mean 'last'?

edit GAH late again

I need something to make me interested again... I went to sleep a few hours after the conference, woke up today hoping for something

then I saw the CNN thread

then the thread for people freaking out about friends code

I wish Sony/MS showed next gen this year E3 just felt really dead

I'll be buying the Ubisoft console if they made one

I was just thinking they meant launch games, and since they appeared to be suggesting the number of characters in each game's title, it gave the impression these are games we don't know about yet, because the ones we do know about have shorter titles.

Anyway I'll drop it now, thanks to everyone who responded.

Guys were there any comments regarding how the WiiU version of ACIII compares graphically to the other -console- versions? (from devs or journalists)

If I'm not mistaken there's a playble WiiU version running on the show floor, right?.

(off-screen capture)

Edit: I'm talking texture res, AA, etc

Looks the same, but hard to tell off screen.

I do expect less graphical glitches such as pop in and a smoother framerate in the final game.

haha sad but true, man. It was a very uninspired E3 this year :/

http://e3.nintendo.com/

click on Wii U Games, there are 22 listed there.

Here's the list of all games known to be coming out for Wii U. I don't know which ones count towards the 26, but there are more than enough of them listed.

Thanks Stump for breaking down the reveals

Thanks guys. Reggie really trolled everyone with the conference saying they had twenty something games to show and time was short and then just had long winded slow talking segments throughout the show. It felt like I saw 6 games...

Really thought Wii U would launch with more parity of multiplaftorm games releasing this Holiday

Hmm. Did the other versions of NG3 run at 1080p? Because of all the screenshots on Nintendo's press site, it's the only one at that resolution. (also P-100's shots look oddly scaled and NSMBU has AA unless Nintendo decided to only bullshot one game).

I'd be absolutely stunned if NSMBU didn't have AA.

I still think they should have done a price+launch+crazy game montage at the end of the conference.

I know fans of all 3 console companies need to calm down and realize that E3 isnt just about the conference, its about the entire week and even a little afterwards...but it still seems like companies have forgotten how to do attention grabbing montages.

Project-P, Mario U, ZombiU (actually looks and sounds like a great game), and Pikmin 3.

Darksiders II and AC III if you feel like waiting/they have unique worthwhile features over the other versions.

Was that at Nintendo's conference? As for "E3 isn't just about the conference", the conference is where the manufacturer shows off what they think is most important, what people will find most interesting. So a bad conference means their best just isn't good enough.

Edit: that gif wasn't animating, so all I saw was "50 games in development"

NSMB U almost definitely has AA, going by gameplay videos and the trailer. Might be the only one at E3 weirdly enough.

Then again I don't know if the pixel counters have said otherwise. *shrugs* But it's certainly impossible for me to make out any jaggies.
