They did say at Investor's meeting recently they are making a new 2D Mario for 3DS, and it could very well be this game... but I am hoping they get more ambitious and release it properly for their home console market... 3DS getting too much Mario already

In case Capcpom goes after those names.
They most likely registered all of these domains for exactly one reason: to prevent dubious people from claiming them. Nintendo don't want that people land on phising sites when searching for "Pokemon" or other Nintendo related stuff. They don't like bad PR for some reason.

Either to stop people trying to trick customers into giving their details by setting up a website that looks the same but whose domain is a popular mispelling....or because they can't spell.
One or 'tother.
Because if Joe Schmo types in the URL incorrectly, they will still arrive at the correct site, which will then proceed to sell them on the game (or so marketing goes).

Other than the Mushroom Kingdom progressing in technology from the medieval era of Mario RPG to the steam era of Mario Kart 64 and Paper Mario to the space era of the Galaxy games, Mario's timeline is not that complex.
And besides, the timeline was reset at the end of Mario Galaxy 1.
