They end up being interchangeable, like "flied lice" instead of "fried rice". From what I remember of Japanese class in highschool, the closest sound to either of them was pronounced like halfway between a d and an l.

I could be completely wrong though, as Japanese 1 was like 5 or 6 years ago and I may not remember correctly.

Well no, because you pronounce 'RS' as 'are ess'. There is no rolling of the 'R' which causes problems (well for me anyway).
