Nintendo has issued a warning to its customers in Japan, saying a "significant" number will miss out on pre-ordering a Switch 2 direct from the company.

In a statement issued to X / Twitter, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company had seen 2.2 million people in Japan alone apply for a pre-order of the Switch 2 from the My Nintendo Store. This "extremely large number of applications… far exceeds our expectations, and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store on June 5," Furukawa explained.

As a result, Nintendo expects a "significant" number of customers will not be selected when the winners of the My Nintendo Store lottery sale are announced tomorrow, April 24. Nintendo has so far not issued a similar warning to customers in the west.

Those who miss out will be carried over to the second lottery sale, but even here Nintendo can't guarantee a pre-order. "We deeply apologize for not being able to meet your expectations despite our prior preparations." Furukawa said.

Nintendo is now working to improve its production system, and from April 24, game retailers and online stores across Japan will begin accepting pre-orders or lottery sales for the Switch 2. The console will also continue to be sold at the My Nintendo Store after the release date. "With the cooperation of retailers, we will continue to ship the console and make efforts to get as many Nintendo Switch 2 consoles as possible into your hands," Furukawa added.

"We plan to continue producing and shipping a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 units in the future. We apologize for the delay in our ability to meet your expectations, and we appreciate your understanding."

While Furukawa's statement is aimed at the Japan market, it raises the question of whether Nintendo will suffer similar issues in the west. According to a FAQ posted to Nintendo's website, the first batch of invitations will go out starting May 8, 2025 for the My Nintendo Store in the U.S. Additional batches of invitation emails will then be sent "periodically" until purchasing on My Nintendo Store is opened to everyone.

Initial invitation emails will be delivered on a first-come, first-serve basis to "eligible registrants who meet the priority criteria." Invitees will have 72 hours from the time when the email is sent to complete their purchase.

If I get a note from Nintendo great. If I don't OK I will look elsewhere tonight.

Nintendo prior to reveal, "we are ready" After reveal "We are not ready"

Imagine being GAF and predicting twice in a row, with Switch 1 and then Switch 2, that Nintendo was going to fail :messenger_tears_of_joy:
The Nintendo haters on GAF will become very interested in sales threads in the next 7 years.
And they'll say Switch 2 is a failure even if it sells 140 million consoles, because it's less than Switch 1.
And they'll argue till their death that Switch 2 isn't even a console.

Switch2 price in japan is 350$, take that price to the US/Canada(aka north america) and u got instantly 10m preorders, not only 2,2m, take that price to europe(including uk ofc) and u get another 10m preorders too, ofc some of those would be scalpers, but hell, i bet decent chunk of those japanese 2,2m preorders are scalpers too xD

Ninty fans bitching about the high price but imo they are gifting money to scalpers and should have charged 499 with no game bundled.

It doesn't really work that way. The weakness of the yen means $350 is far less affordable in Japan than it is in the US.

By that logic switch2 price should be even lower in poland where i live, since polish salaries are 4-5x lower vs US/western salaries, yet here its 2199pln to preorder so 585 usd :)

What is price of the original Switch in Poland? I tried searching but couldn't find anything.

From what I can see, the Zloty has not collapsed since 2017 the way the yen has.

Og switch was much cheaper here vs switch2 preorder/launch price, nintendo has 0 scrupples upping the price here in poland, 1349pln currently but on launch it was bit more expensive here(coz of marku up from retailers):
As u can see it was 1449pln aka 385usd, so switch2 is 200usd above switch1 price in poland- like i said, ninny doesnt give a damn, they care about japan market enough to subsidise price there too, its their choice to do so, hell they could do 1usd in japan and 999usd outside of japan, thats their product to sell so they decide about price in each market, just lets not lie to eachother its not the case, ninny doesnt treat japan and outside of japan equally :)

I think that Switch 2 is going to start slightly stronger than Switch 1, but will plateau sooner... at around 110-120 millions.
A resounding success nonetheless.

Surely someone has a link to the Switch prediction thread, when it was hailed by many as the harbinger of Nintendo going 3rd party etc. etc.

Yeah, Switch 1. It's an amusing read.

But nobody is making the same mistake for the Switch 2. It's a guaranteed success. The only challenge of course is if it can reach the levels set by the first Switch.

the switch 2 is going to sell very well but i think lifetime sales will be less than switch 1 but thats just me

Back in 2017 switch price of 299980 yen was 265usd after exchange tho, lower from the US before taxes, and much lower vs other countries in the world, japan always got preferential prices from nintendo
I don't think you understand what's going on. The yen has depreciated significantly against the USD, euro, and other currencies over the past several years, while salaries have not kept pace, resulting in lower purchasing power. This didn't happen with the PLN.

In any case, as I mentioned in my previous reply, the Switch 2 is 66.7% more expensive than the Switch 1 in JAPAN, so I'm not sure what you're trying to ramble about here, and I don't really care anyway.

This kinda makes me worried about Saturn/MediaMarkt pre-orders here in Germany. They accepted pre-orders for weeks until they were "sold out". They did say in an interview that they have stock to fulfill all pre-orders, but I still think it's weird as Amazon and Otto were sold out in a couple days.

Would love to know the demand for other places.

It happened with pln too, just ninny doesnt give a damn, they subsidise switch2 price in japan just like they did with switch1 price in japan, remember that price was 265usd in 2017 in japan, here in poland switch1 price was 385usd(120usd more).
Ofc not complaining, ninny has full right to do it, but lets call spade a spade, ninny does it for specific reason, they wanna keep domination in japan at any cost, its important to them to such a degree, they rather lower console prices to the point its subsidised just to get huge instalbase first few years.
Im perfectly fine with that, again- not a switch 1 or 2 owner here, so its not me who has to bend the knee, ninny got product ppl like and are willing to pay- customers gladly do it, its capitalism at its finest and im bigtime for it.

WiiU was priced 300usd at launch but many customers around the world decided its bad deal so console sold barely 13,5m units worldwide- and again, no complains from me- capitalism works- bad deal for customer=low sales=console bombs in that case.
