Nintendo Switch 2 thoughts and questions

First, just so everyone is aware. I was asked to make this public. There are members here who work for 3rd party and Nintendo themselves. I have privately for years given them my thoughts. They asked for this to be public. Here you go.

Well that was something today, huh?

Wow!, just… wow!

I was trying to decide how to talk about this. I believe this should be discussed as the “Good, Bad, and Confused”.

Good:

Powerful machine with nice specs for a handheld. Your Nintendo hardware team should be complimented. 1080p, refresh rates, fan for cooling, etc. We should be able to get some good ports.

DK looks GOOD! Not quite what i was envisioning, but this reminds me of a mix between Mario Odyssey and Skylanders. (Ironic, i know).

Mario Party Jamboree Deluxe electric bugaboo looks awesome! This is the type of extra content they should be adding. Looks well done.

Mario Kart looks like a Forza Horizon iteration of Mario kart. They will upgrade MK8D and also sell that for $80 too!

Kirby and Sakurai back together again! Could he be leaving Smash behind to work on other Nintendo franchises?

Bad: Where are the rest of the rumored big third parties? Where is Xbox and Sony? Where was Assassins Creed, Tekken, and Resident Evil?

Drag X Drive - did you really make a game about handicapped people!? WTF? Nintendo is ultra conservative with not wanting to offend anyone. How did this get thru? I know Nintendo is in love with Rocket League, but this is the best you can come up with!? Do you realize the slander that will take place online with people? What are you going to name the characters? Wheels, Zippy, Captain Casters, Easy Rider!? HOW DID THIS GET GREENLIGHTED? You opted for this over a Mario Paint!?

Speaking of ideas that should not be greenlit. What the F%^& is the Virtual Tech Demo? Oh, and of course it’s free, no wait…it cost MONEY!!!! Nintendo…you should be paying US to play this slop! WTH!!!!

DRM and a digital future is here to stay! The Digital game carts and the carts that require a download will be fast and furious for the low, low price of $69.99-$99.99 (GTA VI and COD).

Price of well…everything!!! Damn tariffs and upcoming global depression and recession. Gamers you better understand this right quick. Most of us will not be able to own multiple consoles going forward. Choose wisely. Nintendo tax is real, and now you see it!

Confused:

  • why did you highlight 4 racing games? Mario Kart, Kirby AirRides, Fzero, fast racing? You couldn’t get a shooter, or a a different type of Racer? 1080 Snowboarding or Wave Race?
  • Why were the MP4 not given a release date?
  • Why were there games in the Switch 1 Direct without a release date. Dragon Quest should a have a date!?
  • Why did Nintendo not explain the upgrade path for Switch 1 games getting upgrades? Are they all the same price fo the paid options? Because it seems like Mario Party & Kirby received extra content, and BoTW and ToTK received a frame rate and graphics boosts only. Does the upgrade cost the same?
  • The games receiving free updates, do they arrive on launch day!?
  • Nintendo you gave us a camera!? Within one hour someone will set up an Onlyfans where you can interact and play MarioKart together on Switch 2, while someone is nude for a generous donation! Couldn’t we have just got a Miiverse without being able to draw messages? Show us what people are playing regionally, locally, etc. Instead we are going to get HotTub streams of women flashing their um…”Daisy”…while drifting in MK World.
  • Can the new GameCube controller be used instead of the Classic controller on most games? That would be swell! Nice if Nintendo would explain!

Honestly, this gave me Wii U debut trailer vibes, except I liked the Wii U reveal trailer better! YIKES!!!! This is actually the worst launch trailer since Xbox One. Remember the DRM fiasco. Yeah, it is that bad!!! This is Nintendo’s version of the PS3 reveal when the Sony executive “told players to get a second job” to buy PS3.

Nintendo built such good will overall with the Nintendo Switch. The little system that could. It was a no brainer that this was going to be a PS1 to PS2 transition right?, RIGHT!?, R-I-G-H-T!!!??? Nope….

Nintendo, how could you do this!? How could you not see this was not the right move prior to the event. You have had 5 years since you moved on from Switch Pro to build Switch 2. Yes, I know the real story behind Switch Pro. Yes, Nintendo did the right thing then. Nintendo, you didn’t do right by your fans/consumers/investors today.

There is a saying that still holds true today. “Nintendo gonna Nintendo”. Well Nintendo gonna Nintendo, yet again!

I sold my Switch OLED last summer anticipating a value drop post Switch 2 reveal( and it was collecting dust after I got the Steam Deck and Legion Go). At this point I'm just gonna grab another Switch OLED( used and cheap if I can find one), clear out my backlog( which includes Mario Odyssey, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom/Skyward Sword/Links Awakening, Luigi Mansion 3, Bayo 2, and MUA3) and observe how Switch 2 unfolds over the next 1.5-2 years. I'm starting to feel like Nintendo's IPs asides from Zelda and Metroid don't land for me like they used to, so they're making it pretty easy for me to wait and see with their pricing model( specifically the games, I'd begrudgingly pay $450 for the system but they can fuck all the way off with $80/90 software).

You do know that Nintendo doesn't like to annouce everything right away when it comes to game announcements? We are sure to see more games annouced as the days goes by. As for the rest of the stuff I agree with most of what you said. It's unfortunate about the price increase so that just means I'm going spend less and only spend it on games I really want and wait for sales

Funny thing, is I don’t feel the “magic” of the Switch reveal. I am also left wondering many things about 3rd parties. I personally, do not think they showed well today.

This feels VERY Wii U to me. As a person who bought two Wii U’s at launch.

It now appears that most first party games will get updates over time. Will it be paid or free, we will see. But, it appears they are content selling those upgrades for $69.99-$79.99 for complete editions. Which is wild. But, I do understand the inflation.

But i really think it will sell out at launch, but after…you could be looking at a bad situation. Wii U bad? No, of course not. But no where near Switch 1 sales.

Now, if it was me. I would have the summer Direct ready to go in mid May, even before Switch 2 launch. Let Xbox and other missing 3rd parties show their titles.

Nintendo has some good ideas in there, but also a lot of consulted ideas. Reminding me of Wii U, (again). I am still stunned, quite honestly.

I agree with you 100%. I am sure there are more titles to announce. But, it does seem odd, to not put your best foot forward on a new console.

They are so afraid of another Wii >> Wii U kind of situation that they created a console that looks exactly like the previous one. Branding looks the same, same logo, etc...they added a "2" and called it a day.

Like...okay, you don't need to reinvent the wheel but jesus this is boring.

On top of all this, 90€ games here in Europe? lmao...okay

It is still a big YIKES. Hopefully they let us use the GameCube controller instead of the pro controller for most games.

Well, I liked that it had back buttons. This should be the norm in every controller instead of having to pay 300 for a pro controller. But other than that, I feel like the one from Switch 1 is better by the looks of it.

I didn't either, and I'm willing to accept that at some point I'm no longer the target audience for what a company markets. I don't know if I'm there with Nintendo 'quite' yet, but I'm whelmed by what has been shown for Switch 2 so far. And I don't think it's even strictly Nintendo, the current gaming industry is kind of ho-hum for me. Alot of the big name stuff isn't resonating, so I've mostly been dieting on Indies, retro games and older AAA stuff from like a gen ago on my Legion Go. And since that system is more or less filling the use case the Switch originally occupied( minus Nintendo games of course), I think the natural result was reduced anticipation for Switch 2. I'm not sure what would have made me feel the way I did when BOTW was revealed along with Switch 1 back in 2017, but today's reveal didn't stick the landing in a way that makes SW2 more than a 'I'll get it at some point down the line' purchase.

Just off the top, I outright refuse to pay $80 for the games. All the things I hear about inflation and what games cost back in 1990 and all that jazz, the only profits I care about are my wallets and our purchasing power is only going further down, so I don't give a shit what economic reasons the companies have for their pricing. I have to remind myself that at days end, these are entertainment devices and they don't escape the same scrutiny I apply to everything else I spend money on. My discretionary income, what's left of it, isn't exclusively for video games.
