Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

A lot longer, yes. It's still quick, but not "10 seconds" quick. Usually around 45 seconds or so from powering on to playing again.

That is incorrect. Or at least my PS4 (1 tb model) takes somewhere between 10-20 seconds to be playing.

Still, the Switch seems to be very quick and I have no doubt the usage of cartridges will eliminate a lot of loading and installing screens we see on the other two consoles, which is great.

I have a question. I'm in Japan right now and I'm hoping to lineup at sofmap to pick up a switch and BoTW. Will the console be locked to Japanese or can I change the language ?

If it's anything like the EU Switch, you can change the language.

This video shows the language being changed from English to Japanese - the game icon even changes. It looks like every region's version of Zelda is on the same cart and it just changes depending on the language setting:

Totally anecdotal, but many of female FB friends are interested in the Switch. Reminds me of the Wii interest.

These are non-gamers btw.

Maybe Nintendo did it again?

It certainly feels like a complete reversal from the Wii U launch, that's for sure. I don't know if we'll ever get to Wii-like numbers again but I'm sure this won't be a flop.

I'm not so sure about that. I haven't heard anyone talking about it yet besides my coworker that plays a lot of video games. The Wii was on every news outlet showing off Wii sports for a week or two around launch. From there, word of mouth spread. I've only seen the Switch on late night TV a few months ago.

Maybe from Nintedo sending a Switch to channels like this: https://youtu.be/tYbMExORVEo

It seems like Nintendo has sent the Switch to every YouTuber with a sizable subscriber base, regardless if it's a gaming channel or not. That is probably the best form of marketing they could be doing these days.

If these things catch fire with non- or lapsed gamers, they catch fire after launch. The first week of the Wii launch (before Black Friday) was your best shot at getting one until... 2009 or so.

No way to tell whether it really catches on until the system is out in the wild. Pun half-intended.

Anyone with a switch, could you possibly do a quick check and see if the kickstand will support the screen in a vertical position? A number of developers have mentioned this, but we don't know if that would require a third party stand.

Will the Switch automatically switch Internet connections, and prioritize wired connections when they exist?

Nintendo devices have always handled Internet connections absolutely horribly. Are there any improvements?

this is a question i want answered also as i plan to have it wired in dock mode but will also be using handheld mode and i dont want to have to constantly have to reconnect to the connection i want.

Small thing I noticed, and am sure others have. The Neon colors on the separate Joy-Cons are the opposite of those on the Neon console, so if you buy the Neon Joy-Cons you'd have set of each color instead of double ups of each. Just what I was hoping for.

PS. anyone tried plugging a Switch Pro Controller into a PC yet?

The patent thread has a really interesting discussion on this. Apparently, when the dock is wired, will connect wirelessly to the switch, much like the U gamepad to to the console, and emulate a wired connection speed to the switch, even if it's in handheld or tabletop mode.

What? My PS4 took around 10 seconds just now with nioh running

Yeah, I just tested it. From hitting the home button on my controller to actually playing a suspended game, it's a bit under 30 seconds.

Edit - It actually varies. If I immediately turn my PS4 back on after putting it in rest mode, it takes around 13 seconds. If I turn it on after the system has been in rest mode for a few minutes or longer, it takes around 30.

Whoa whoa whoa!!! Blaster Master Zero???

*searches Google*

What???? :O

Day 1

That was more or less my reaction. Game looks pretty great too! Hope this isn't far off from system launch next week because I definitely plan on picking this up.

Definitely interesting. Never heard of this channel before, but I'm not the target audience, I guess?

Having said that, ~3.5 million subscribers is an audience worth trying to reach. Especially compared to 0.7 million for something like GameXplain and especially if you are trying to reach a casual/non-gamer audience.

Yeah, I noticed this right away. I'm probably gonna go with blue mostly, but I think red looks great too. I'm not a huge fan of the colors being mixed.

Are the single joy-con controllers also the opposite of what comes with the system? I would probably just buy another blue one if that's the case, and not a whole set. Aint no 4 player co-op going on at my crib anytime soon, and if there is my friends can bring their own damn joy con lol. Shit is expensive.

Just watched part of the CNET kickstand video, what a ridiculous video and complaint that is "bash your Switch around and man handle and manipulate it in tabletop mode in ways you won't normally do and it will fall over"

Might of been answered already and apologies if so but I am curious. Since the Switch is region free, is there any way to access the e-shop from different regions? Would be great to download Japanese only digital games without hassle.

...That is a pretty tech heavy channel!

I was expecting makeup channel or something, not usb-c review video =P

Also her focus seem to be on Apple products but she has NES mini, 3DS and even amiibo videos

90% of GameXplain audience will already buy the switch no matter what =P

Tried searching this thread. Didn't see it. Do we know if the switch can be docked with the screen facing rearwards?

This won't work. The Switch has a special groove in the back that slides into the plastic inside the dock to hold it in place. Won't work backwards.

Unfortunately, Nintendo isn't offering this option (at least to start). You won't be able to buy a single red or blue joycon. The only ones they're selling as singles are grey. Options are:

Grey L
Grey R
Grey L+R
Red L+R
Blue L+R
Red/Blue L+R

Thanks you might have just saved me a lot of time lol

Just watched part of the CNET kickstand video, what a ridiculous video and complaint that is "bash your Switch around and man handle and manipulate it in tabletop mode in ways you won't normally do and it will fall over"

Definitely ridiculous, The entire video seems like clickbait but at the same time I thought it was hilarious. Watching the guy's hands constantly bumping into the Switch and handling it so clumsily and frantically reminded me of bad infomercial acting.

Went to Nintendo Switch event tonight. Will edit short video later. For now, some thoughts:

  • HD rumble is super neat and the three mini-games we got to try in 1-2-Switch were funny.
  • Face-buttons and joysticks on the joycons feel nice, but the trigger and overall feel is kind of cheap.
  • Feels better with the wrist-strap grip applied though even the rep put it on incorrectly at first.
  • When attached to the system itself it feels a bit flimsy, sadly (it wobbles a little on the rail).
  • Didn't see anyone having any real performance issues on Zelda, and a lot of big smiles
  • Played Sonic Mania in handheld mode and then on TV. Better colors on Switch itself!
  • Pro controller was the best controller. Joycons in grip thing felt a bit weird.
  • They had a life-sized Mario go-kart and I asked my friend to film me doing the Luigi evil-eye
  • Came home with a Nintendo Switch branded water bottle, cookie, pretzels, cable holder, and pin

I agree. It needs that wii sports, I think some people see this as interesting and then realize they wont ever use it. I do not think it is going to make people start to play video games like the wii did.

This doesn't sound good... Worried now that after a few months or maybe even after a few weeks of Switching the Joy-cons over and over, they could start getting loose on the rails : /

Thanks to the sleep function and the fact that switch games are cartridge based you can jump into a Zelda game within 10 seconds from passing the power button. It's really incredible, a gamer's dream!

Two questions from that:

1) does the switch dock have HDMI-CEC or they just left it on the correct input? If I have to manually switch inputs that'll slow things down.

2) do you have to press the power button on the console, or can you power it on from the joycons / pro controller wirelessly?
