Nintendo's Online Plans

with all the talk of free online play coming to DS and Revolution, i thought you guys might want to take this into consideration.

Nintendo games will definitely be free. as far as everyone else is concerned though, they could very well do what they did with the GameCube, and leave it up to third party developers to decide whether they want to charge or not.

there's also a very good chance that they'll have something a bit more robust ala live, but i don't think they'd want their wallet to take that big of hit. although Nintendo is different company now, and they're a bit more willing to drop some cash now. although im not sure they'd be down with dropping that much.

i think the best way for them to pull something like this off, would be to make a matching service like live, but not try to hide the fact that it's nothing more than a matching service, and have the Revolution, and the DS act as the host itself. i remember seeing plans (and i suppose you could say blue prints) way back around 2002 for something like this on the GameCube, which included some type of mini harddrive (by IBM maybe, i can't remember too well) that would plug into one of the high speed ports on the bottom of the GameCube, and this would allow for free online play, so long as you had the mini harddrive, or could connect to a system that had one. this was planed for japan only, but i guess things just didn't go through.

in conclusion though, i would not be suprised if the Revolution offered both of these online infrastructures. especially if the Revolution does indeed come with a harddrive of some sort. it would be a great solution to the current online model that Nintendo isn't necessarily cool with.

thoughts?

I've never understood why Nintendo never carried out its online plans for the Gamecube. It was appearent that they were there innitially with the BBA, and PSO and the modem. I mean hell look at the bottom of your Game Cube. There are ports for a high speed connection.

I can only say that an online nintendo console (particularly free of charge) is a dream come true. I was so looking foward to more Nintendo games being online (I almost brought the BBA when I bought PSO) Particularly Animal Crossing.

Their online support has been somewhat disappointing. There were so many games with nice multiplayer that could have been great if they were put online

ugh so what are you saying? You want more replies?

Most of us don't have any clue how Nintendo will carry this out.

The rest of us just flat out don't believe this new nintendo.

We have such a long wait until new details

I find it hard to believe that at this point there are still people who don't think Nintendo will go online :lol

Yeah but its true

I would love to believe Reggie but
Reggie is not the President of NCL not even the president of NOA

I love the man cause he is funny and sharp but I am sure that the powers that be at Nintendo will find a way to f--- this up people will bitch about the LAN ONLY games like Mario Cart DS and Metriod Hunters. That is until Animal Crossing comes along with real online play.
If they could add Pokemon DS to the online list they would have a better chance at changing the minds of people here.

honestly, i seriously will not believe it until i see it...

i can just imagine the whole thing being brushed under the table like it never happened and then a barrage of questions about the subject being answered with witty and coy non-answers...

I certainly think Nintendo will provide their own games free, and leave it up to the third parties how they want to do things. To do otherwise would likely require Nintendo to have their own "live" type service, providing back end infrastructure for third party games, and I can't see them doing that - I can't see how it'd be financially feasible without asking for a subscription. I think they'll be willing to provide that infrastructure for their own games, but third parties..? I'm sure, though, they'll encourage, and perhaps even provide incentives to publishers to provide their online games for free too.

I think that's fine though. As far as I'm concerned, the most important thing is that Nintendo is making online games themselves, and their games will be free.

I think that they screwed up by waiting for broadband to come to fruition. I don't think enough people in Japan have broadband and their games are asshole/pedophile magnets. I'm still not sure how the implement an online Pokemon game or a DS game which will protect kids from a really bad online experience.

Huh...have you been to Neverland or something?

what is with the junior member trolls (again) and bad ones at that. Don't let GAF sink to Gamefaqs level.

What the hell are you talking about? Your way off on Japan's broadband and the asshole/pedophile comment is a poor generalization.

I think the real reason that Nintendo hasn't been quick to adopt online is that they wanted to find a business model suitable for them. They don't like things that suck money away but don't have a guarenteed return.

Well Deg laster forever, and I'm 99.9 percent convinced Keith Franklin is his secondary account that's now kicking in... so it could be a while

All I'm going to say is Mario Kart DS and Advance Wars 3 better be Wi-Fi online enabled this year (not just Animal Crossing).

If not ... feed Iwata and Reggie to the lions please.

KF's been around for ages.

If it wasn't for these last few days, this thread would already be 2+ pages of people bitching/whining/trolling about how Nintendo will never be online, blah, blah, blah... :lol :lol

He was around for a long time (Averaging .5 posts a day). Then all of a sudden Deg gets banned, and instead of Deg trolling 15 posts a day in Nintendo threads, KF suddenly appears. Seems awfully coincidental :D

They're both idiots but KF at least seems to have a decent grasp of the English language. Not the same person.
