No DS redesign, says NoE

Nintendo of Europe has told GamesIndustry.biz that there are no plans to unveil a redesigned version of the multi-million selling Nintendo DS handheld this week, despite rumours to the contrary.

Reports of a redesign began to emerge after online retailer Lik-Sang said Nintendo was planning to unveil the new unit at a press conference in Japan today. Lik-Sang's claims were backed up by Japanese retail sources.

But a Nintendo spokesperson has dismissed the reports, describing them as "pure rumour and speculation." However, although a redesign will not be revealed as soon as has been rumoured, it seems highly likely that Nintendo will unveil a new, more compact DS at some point in the near future.

Pretty much as I expected; the DS is still doing great, and it'd be a little too early.

Meh, I guess I'll just have to get the Mario Kart bundle now, instead of waiting for the revision. I really do want the DS to be redesigned, though. The hardware could look a lot nicer.

ok thanks. So with the DS we're only about 14 months.

Yes. If we went by that timeline, the Japanese one, we'd see the redesign in November. If we went by the US timeline, we'd see it in September or so.

makes sense.

No redesign makes me a sad panda.

However, if they get the damn graphite DS out over here, I may break down and buy the current clunky design anyway...

So, unless I totally forgot how to read these press releases, that pretty much confirms a redesign is on the way, right?

Why redesign something thats selling really well? If they were getting soundly outsold by the PSP I could understand it, but the rate they are going in Japan it makes no sense.

It'll be unveiled at E3 y'all. It was always set for E3 as far as I know. . .

But.. you don't.. know anything. :P

It's really not as bad as some people say. It looks ugly closed, but it looks fine when open. As far as how it feels, it's a bit thick, but the buttons are all fine. The only comfort issue is really the edges, which can bug some people. I hold it in a way where it usually doesn't, however.

People will buy the same hardware over again.

Truthfully, I don't find it to be uncomfortable, but it is a little bulky.

The SP was selling well also, but they released the Micro along side of it. Its the best of both worlds because they get people to rebuy the hardware plus they get new users that buy the redesin because they didnt like the original, wich works even better with the DS as so many are turned off by the form factor.
As we've seen with the micro a redesign doesnt mean a replacement.

Not what I wanted to hear but I guess I can wait till E3. What the odds Mana will come out before that in USA and totally rock anyhow?

If I were Nintendo I'd use the redesign in place of a price drop.
Considering the DS price is already really low it makes sense to keep the price at 129$ with a new model instead of cutting the price to 99$ already in the second year of life of the platform which leaves little room for future actions.

What did happen to those rumors of a press conference on January, 26th in Europe?
Rumored conferences usually turn out to be fake.

There's a DICE conference/keynote on the 9th of February.

EDIT: Just heard from Thomper there IS going to be a conference on the 26th :)

There is indeed one coming, for European journalists, on the 24th, in London. :)

Remember what happened with the SP?

Anyone? Anyone?

Edge magazine broke the news that Nintendo would release an updated GBA with a lit screen and Nintendo immediately issued a rebuttal saying that there was not going to be a new GBA.
A couple weeks later Nintendo officially unveils the GBA SP.

Standard Nintendo.

Are we gonna have these every week? No doubt there will be another rumoured announcement next week, when this one is proven bunkum.

I don't really see how they could make it smaller without compromising the games and how they play. I guess they could dump the GBA port to make it thinner, but that's hardly an update worthy of a redesign.

A Nintendo press-conference?
Officially it's a 'hands-on event for the European press in London, which will include some DS game unveilings". Probably the European Brain Training etc, but who knows?

Hyping ftw.

I'd imagine Tetris will be shown in London next week. Gamefront had a Euro release down as Feb 10th but I don't see that happening, probably sometime in March. Should get final dates for Brain Training and Metroid Hunters in Europe as well.

Because it's super ugly and bulky in the age of 360/PSP sexiness. *hides as a hail of bullets are fired at him*

I know they're part of the Nintendo machine, but since when did NoE become the authority on what's going to or not going to happen with Nintendo products?
