No longer need to wear a mask at the gym!

My gym was stupid.

When you entered or walked around you needed to have it on, but as soon as you actually went to lift or cardio you disn't need it.

Now, it's optional and now no one wears one, lmao.

Yeah that was the rule at my YMCA, which basically meant you would just wear your mask entering and leaving the gym area, no-one was putting it back in between sets or changing equipment.

Don't need to wear one in my gym. Wouldn't be able to work out with a mask on. Doing super sets while wearing a mask would kill me.

I haven’t worn a mask at the gym since they reopened last June. It’s been great. It’s been a small piece of normalcy throughout all this. Really helped keep things in perspective when things were stressful.

I didn't either, but staff would tell me to put it on, and I'm like OK, but never did.

When I went to Vegas a few months back, the Gym casino I was at (Encore/Wynn) made you wear it while working out. Probably the stupidest thing. It made me so sick and so much harder to breath that it made me so much more exhausted while working out then I usually get.

I was always surprised when I saw people doing sports (cycling, running etc.) or working out while voluntarily wearing a mask. I had to wear a mask during bike rides when for a few months it was mandatory for everyone including cyclists and it was an extremely uncomfortable experience both with learning to breathe and getting hot inside the mask (I had a tight one specifically for cycling).

I was finally slipping into a good schedule when the lockdowns started. Would be nice to try getting into it again.

Wait, people were working out with a mask on?

That doesn't sound healthy.
We've had to wear masks at gyms where I live since February last year. It's not ideal but unless you're doing a really crazy workout it's not that bad.

Not like you must keep it on at all times, you can still lower it occasionally to have a drink etc.

People do strenuous exercise with masks on all the time, doubt there are any real health implications. Its just gotta be uncomfortable and gross.

I never wore one anyway at my gym through the whole pandemic. Almost no one did there. I'm frankly not sure how the gym got away with it (Virginia).

Wore a mask most of the year doing hard cardio. I was not going to give up my workouts. At first it was terrible, but I think that because I forced my body to work harder with less oxygen, it ended up improving my cardio overall. I'll be interested to see how much my performance has improved without it.

FYI - I live in the shit hole state of NJ where they still haven't even lifted the indoor mandate. It will be lifted this weekend.

Does anyone remember like right before covid was a thing, there were a bunch of companies selling workout masks that reduce oxygen. I kept seeing it everywhere on Instagram and social media. I think the theory was that if you simulate high altitude (low oxygen) your body produces more hemoglobin or something.

wonder what happened to those companies. The pandemic and mask mandates must have put them all out of business…

My dumb apartment gym still requires them hopefully when CA goes full open in June they lax the restriction I'm already full vaxxed so I'm not worried

Combination of gym mask rules, and the fact that I've been working from home for over a year anyway, means I cancelled my gym membership last October and have been working out at home since.

30 replies and not a single mask karen in here trying to defend wearing a mask or talk us into continuing to wear one.

Fascinating to me how fast the lockdown apologists have gone quiet.

Egging people on to come pick a fight is not cute. It makes you look like an asshole honestly. I deal with many like you on a daily basis at my gym(I work at one.), and its the same I can't breathe. my rights crap. Its tiring and annoying. I've heard it all.

Working at the gym I am required to wear my mask the entire shift and our members were required to wear theirs 100% of the time they were in the building, and sanitizing because people refuse to wipe down machines or because they cough all over shit and its disgusting. Second off it was state mandated about mask, and now that its changed we get a lot of shit from members about it, but I have to follow corporate guidelines and believe me, that becomes a headache fighting daily with those who feel they are overly righteous people who try to make an example to stick it to us staff. Reality is we threaten to cancel your membership and you shut up. It's pretty grand. I have cancelled countless memberships over members being rude and disrespectful. I have to follow the rules or I lose my job. Don't make it harder on us then it has to be.

Now when I go to workout(i workout at a different facility and their rules are different)...I still wear my mask at the gym. I mean theres no sense arguing with people who have a one way opinion on the subject. Secondly my gym has been strictly "wear your mask when you workout, you can remove it during cardio only" so it wasn't a big deal honestly. Like I said, I wear mine for the whole 2 hours i'm there, doing weights, and an hour of cardio.

Does it suck? Yes. Am I gonna bitch about it? No because I am grateful my gym has been opened since June of last year. Its like wearing a seatbelt when I drive or using protection if i'm going to have sex. Regardless of how you choose to be closeminded and view it, you do whatever you can to protect yourself.. and for myself, I chose to do so because I have many family members who have health issues, an elderly grandma and I won't risk them for being lazy.

and I am vaccinated so technically I don't need to wear the "stupid mask" but again, protection is key. ;)

Imagine thinking that restricting your airflow during exercise is a good healthy thing.
athletes use oxygen deprivation masks all the time or train at high altitudes, specifically to promote the formation of red blood cells and improving your cardio

There we go! Not really picking a fight as genuinely wondering where you guys went. Thank you for not disappointing.

How the hell could you workout wearing a mask without passing out?

People were working out at gyms with masks long before the pandemic.

These things that intentionally decrease oxygen flow.

I don't see how a mask for covid would be any worse.

But again, I don't work out with either since I never go to the gym to begin with.

How far shall we take it? If it's an "improvement" then perhaps we just always wear masks and create super lungs?

Restricting air intake is not the same as reducing air pressure. And, athletic hypoxic training is debatable, and arguably the athlete already has strong lungs.

In general the average person who does a spin class, or HIIT, or weights - it is better to not restrict intake at all

Cool I mean I work out alone and don’t even understand why people go to gyms unless they’re looking for sex partners, but enjoy your maskless workouts 👍

just got back from LA Fitness...still have to wear a mask, they still check your temperature when you sign in...then again this is LA
