So the all the rumors are confirmed now:

Chris writes "FileFront has broke the news from Blizzard that they are no longer placing their highly popular MMORPG on store shelves, due to the recent server problems reported by Slashdot on Tuesday. Denying rumors that they had asked several stores to pull the game from shelves, Blizzard rep Gil Shrif is quoted as saying: 'We’re just being careful not to release additional copies to be sold until we feel the game servers can support additional players.' The online store on Blizzard's website shows the game to be out of stock. No word on whether or not this will affect the Korean release."

I would have to say that it doesn't surprise me, but it makes me sad. I am one of the many who didn't have the funds to buy it, let alone the CE, when it came out. I am just hoping they eventually make up for this by doing what they did with WC3. You can still buy BOTH the normal and CE of WC3 on Blizzard's site. They should definately make more CEs in this down time.

This isn't news, Blizzard has stated for a couple of weeks at least that they won't release any new copies until they are confident they have ironed out their server issues.

No, they didn't state anything. It has been rumors up to this point.

Their January 10th press release says nothing about it.

I believe the lasts sales figure was over 600,000 copies and about 200,000 people on at any given time (even during traditional "non peak" times).

I really used to hate the World Pass system in FFXI, man, I SO see the wisdom in it now. As restricting and evil as it is, it served a purpose. Letting people cram themselves into the highest pop servers with multiple characters is a recipie for disaster it.

Oh well, just thought I'd bring that up before the "all MMORPG launches are like this" and "my server isn't having any problems" people show up. No, they're not all like this and WoW has been in retail for three months. Not to mention it was in alpha for a long time, had a seven month beta and a couple stress tests. We're well-past the launch now.

Server not having the problems? Good for you, go and play. Don't give any grief to the people having problems.

Lol, this is an interesting twist.

Blizzard sez: Hey gamers, stop buying this game!

Really. Maybe they can kick people who ignore your pleas for help in Stranglethorn when you're getting ganged to make room for people who deserve a shot? /personaltangent ;)

we got about 24 at work today, no idea why
they were shipped 2nd day

If you look at out of the way stores you can find stacks fo them.

Just yesterday they suddenly had about 16 copies at aa Wal*mart in an out of the way location, when the two popular stores have been sold out since Christmas.

Yeah, the game has been off the shelves for a while. What they really need to do is cap the amount of characters that can be made on a server. It seems if one person gets WoW, they may go onto a high pop server, then the person's friends get the game and go on that same server, making it more laggy and compounding the problems that have pushed Blizzard to get more servers up. Maybe to help with a character cap they could find a way to allow players a one time option to move their characters to another server (a less populated one) so that they don't lose the character(s) they've grown attached to and can still play with their friends. :\
