I wonder if you polled Christians (won't generalize) about gay rights, and denying their children hospital care, you would be surprised. But come on, denying hospital care? Christian Scientists are a small ass group. And as we see with the developments in the Lutheran Church, being Christian /= against Gays.
you truly think that gays would not be better off in a predominantly religion free world?

They probably would be, but that wasn't my point. I'm just trying to show that being Christian doesn't mean you hate Gays.

Of course it doesn't. But I don't see how you can be a christian without thinking that homosexuality is wrong. I know the prayer healing thing isn't really fair, but it's something that wouldn't happen in a religion-free world. Unless the atheist parents favored herbs over hospital care or something. :p

I've met few gay christians, the thinking with them goes that it might be wrong but all is forgiven if you just believe. They don't consider it to be a big thing.

Yeah I can understand that, I don't think there's anything in the Bible saying that homosexuality is any different from all the other sins that everyone commits daily, even in our thoughts. I still have some issues with it but that would be going off-topic.

What? If christianity continues to change periodically like this, agnostics/atheists need not worry..though i'm not sure it should be even called a religion (an abrahamic one at that).:lol

Christianity=consumerism.

The Leviticus passage is a Mosaic law so it doesn't necessarily apply to Christians. There's nothing in the New Testament that says "laying with a man" is wrong. I am shocked that most Christians don't realize this.

Really? I'd wager the vast majority don't know the 10 Commandments. Something like that isn't shocking at all.

Yes, that hasn't happened already.

Lutheran church of Finland (national church) has a stronger emphasis on the forgiveness aspects of christianity. That doesn't mean there's no fundamentalism, but the atmosphere is generally more lax. For example there was a case few months ago where the church stated that it will allow one priest to continue working as a priest after his sex change operation.

I don't think religion is the problem but the institutions that use it. I myself don't understand religion, I've never been able to grasp the concept of religious faith. But I don't mind if someone believes in god. But when a large groups of people start sharing a common narrow set of thinking when the only common denominator is a belief in god, there starts to be problems. I mean, how should it affect your perception of, say, homosexuality in any way if you believe there's a guy up there in the clouds or not?

It's not like the old law ceased in its relevance. They were obviously motivated by some sense on God's part of right and wrong, which is supposed to be eternal. The laws themselves wouldn't apply, obviously, but I think that the implications would be clear...of course, I've heard other explanations - whether viable or an excuse I'm not going to judge at the moment. I just don't think that the abolition of the law is one of them.

Romans 1:26-27 (King James Version)

26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Haha, I was once watching a fragment of Contact on youtube, and at one point Jody Foster says "oh my God" even though she is atheist in the movie.

There was one youtuber who commented that this meant she was religious after all, and he said that every person who uses a term like "oh my god" or "jesus" or "good lord" is religious even if they deny it. It was so ridiculous. :lol He couldn't fathom that it's just a meaningless phrase to express amazement. Someone asked him if he believed that if someone says "Holy shit" that person believes in a divine feces, but he persisted.

I know it has nothing to do with this thread, but your post reminded me of this.

Sometimes I do this in full awareness because the irony amuses me. I don't think there's any reason to find it weird. Religion is embedded in world culture—our art, our literature, and, of course, our language. Freighting every religious reference with a pious or blasphemous implication is as misguided and futile as denying religion's role in our history.

jesus christ or goddamn as an expletive of sorts is fine; i really should cut out the 'bless you' after sneezes and the occasional 'oh my god' entirely as they are empty terms at this point.

Well there are lots of fake-medicine out there that has nothing to do with religion, that's a different problem that wouldn't be solved just by having a religion-free society. Maybe a scam-free society would work that one out.
