NOAA erases ‘human activity’ from news release on soaring greenhouse gases

In a truly shocking news release on its Annual Greenhouse Gas Index, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has erased any reference to “human activity” or fossil fuels. The index monitors the warming influence of greenhouse gases like CO2.
Last year, NOAA’s news release for the index featured the picture of flaring gas from fossil fuel extraction (see top image). The release began by stating, “human activity has increased the direct warming effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere by 50 percent above pre-industrial levels during the past 25 years, according to NOAA’s 10th annual Greenhouse Gas Index.”
This year, the news release begins, “NOAA’s Annual Greenhouse Gas Index, which tracks the warming influence of long-lived greenhouse gases, has increased by 40 percent from 1990 to 2016 — with most of that attributable to rising carbon dioxide levels, according to NOAA climate scientists.”
Rather than explaining that human activity is the cause, the agency’s release instead goes on to state that “the role of greenhouse gases on influencing global temperatures is well understood by scientists, but it’s a complicated topic that can be difficult to communicate.”
What? Are NOAA officials in the Trump administration implying that the human role in greenhouse gas emissions is somehow too complicated to explain to the public?

I get more than most it's a complicated topic, but that's a bullshit reason not to try. Most of science is complicated to explain to the public, that doesn't mean we should give up because of push back.

That's not the real reason for them pulling it either.

For a while I thought this was bad but not as bad as when I read about all the major extinction events. If this gets to the point that it releases all the methane in ice, every single human being will die. Some estimates put it at about a 5 degree warming before we are fucked in a huge way.

You know, this week, with the CNN article about the 150 or so US cities that are going underwater within the next century, I've come to terms with our demise as a species. We're all going to become extinct, and most of us in this thread will be alive to see it to the very end.

But unlike all of the other dominant species that dominated this planet, humans have the ability to control their destiny. We had a chance to keep our planet from melting. We had a chance to save our planet, provide health care for our citizens, restore the rights for our most oppressed peoples, find sustainable & renewable energy, etc, etc. We had the chance to change our overall trajectory, as a society.

But we chose to be shit.

Good job, humanity.

Nah, humans are resilient. We have survived worse. Even nuclear winter will cause us to survive. Besides, the real people in danger are islanders in remote areas who will be eradicated and forgotten, rich countries like the US will just raise cities to make them higher, come up with expensive band aid solutions. Instead you are seeing the mass extinction of non domesticated animals at an alarming rate. Chinese poaching of sharks, lions, tigers, rhinos, elephants, japanese and norwegian whaling etc. Plant and animal species extinct. All so we can have 10 ion humans, 4 billion chickens, 5 billions cows, 2 billion sheep, 5 billion pigs, 2 billion dogs and cats etc. And kentucky bluegrass resistant to drought and gmo vegetables that will outlive california redwoods etc.

What's maddening about this, is the fact that there is so much money to be made in clean energy. Both directly and indirectly.

Just look back at what boon the obamabucks were for getting people to turn in old cars for more fuel efficient.

Let's break this down.

1. 150 cities are not going to be underwater in the next century. Shit ain't happening, I don't care what CNN says, 1 m (or so) of sea level rise ain't gonna do that. At most parts of the cities will be flooded, or will have to erect ways to keep flooding from happening.

2. Even in the absolute worst case scenario, it is neigh impossible that humans become extinct. Pretty much every scientist who has studied climate change, including bodies like the IPCC state this loudly and frequently. Climate change isn't about our continued existence, but the quality of our existence and the effect we have on other ecosystems.

3. Our planet isn't going anywhere. Nor is it "melting" anytime soon. Even if every human tried their god damnedest to accelerate global warming as much as possible, there would still be land ice for around 1000 years. That's how much there is. (Of course those 1000 years of melting would see around 20-70 m of sea level rise, which wouldn't be great for anyone). What is at risk are ecosystems that are already vulnerable because of human intrusion now having to deal with rapid climatological change, which can and will cause a large number of species to go extinct. If there's one reason to try to stop AGW it's that. We can fix the problems climate change is going to have on the human species, it's other life that's going to do a bit of struggling.

Most republicans don't care because they have no actual legacies, and they're getting paid to live their empty shallow short lifes as "exemplary" individuals. I am actually starting to wonder how long it will take until the world bands together for a full scale invasion of the US. in a apocalyptic battle to save the planet Earth from Evil Dr. Drumpf and his Doomsday device The Coal Power Plant.

Would make for a cool movie before we all die due to environmental catastrophe.
