New Android tablet by Nokia running Android 5.0 Lollipop on an Intel Atom processor.

It is running Nokia Z Launcher on top of Android.

The device is made in partnership with Foxconn (who is licensing it from Nokia).

It is priced at $250 and launching first in China on the 19th of February.

It is also the first Android tablet with the reversible USB Type-C connector, picture below.

The Verge: Nokia's first device after Microsoft is an iPad mini clone that runs Android

Nokia is partnering with Foxconn to build the N1, licensing the industrial design, Nokia brand, and Z Launcher software to the device maker. That’s not a surprise move given the company’s clear intentions to enable third parties to build products with the Nokia brand, but it does mean Nokia doesn’t own all the manufacturing. The company is now planning to launch the Nokia N1 in China for $249 (before taxes) around the time of Chinese New Year (February 19th), and it will roll out to Russia and select European countries after the Chinese release.

Android Central are saying it's $249, and....

China will be getting the tablet first, along with select European markets later.

also...

Nokia stated during the announcement that it is licensing its name to Foxconn, who will be handling the engineering, marketing and sales of the Nokia N1:

In addition to the Nokia brand, Nokia is licensing the industrial design, Z Launcher software layer and IP on a running royalty basis to the OEM partner. The OEM partner is responsible for full business execution, from engineering and sales to customer care, including liabilities and warranty costs, inbound IP and software licensing and contractual agreements with 3rd parties.

it looks pretty much like an iPad mini without the chamfer.
same screen size, resolution, very similar button placements.

i don't see what the claimed USP will be.
The Launcher? Do people get tablets because of a specific launcher?

If it retains Nokia's build quality of old and price it competitively this will be a Android tablet to look out for.

Tis a shame they didn't opt for a stock android launcher though.

Edit:

Oh dear no tank like build quality from Nokia anymore then... this makes me a sad panda :(

If you can sideload the Play Store and all the Google apps on this I'm all for. This looks great.

Hm. 250... hows that processor?

Should be interesting.

Supposed to be in the range of a Snapdragon 805.

I'd almost always agree, but stock Android kind of sucks for tablets. You'll be able to install the Google Now launcher anyway, and if the only modification they've made is the launcher it will pretty much be stock then.

Foxconn has been wanting to get into its own products for awhile. Problem is when people hear foxconn they think suicide and sweat shops.

Looks like they just paid Nokia to use the name.

It's a boring tablet. Nokia is phones with big bulgy colorful phones, not this Intel box.

And their not even handling this, outsourced to some guys at China.

Tongue in cheek, although I don't know how happy Microsoft can be with this. Nokia isn't allowed to make smartphones until end of 2016 though.

As for the Foxconn relationship, it makes a lot of sense. They have the manufacturing expertise, while Nokia has the brand cachet and hardware and software design and development expertise. Looks like a solid win for both parties.

Letting Foxconn design, manufacture and market an Ipad Mini clone running Android under your name is not back. Sorry.

Foxconn aren't designing shit.

The Polaroidization of the Nokia brand begins.

Updated the op with more details on the device, including price, foxconn etc.

Also added several media links for more information.

I think the biggest thing here is that it uses the type C reversible micro USB for connectivity.

What? Foxconn is producing for everybody, from iPads to Xboxes to Playstations to Phones of any kind.

I just installed the Z launcher on my Note 3. It works well and is refreshingly "new" feeling and actually works.

Wish you could actually pin apps to the list, its the only thing thats missing for me at the moment.

This is not really outsourcing. Foxconn has the license and is paying royalties, and is handling the engineering, customer support, sales, and warranties for the product.

Foxconn is trying to make a name for themselves, yea?

Added the details and the picture of the reversible USB Type-C connector to the op.

Outside of a lack of a microsd slot, TAKE MY MONEY.

Thought of getting the Xiaomi MI Pad, but this should have better developer support.

Now arrive in Europe so I can buy it.

Foxconn can make quality stuff and they have tons of experience from building Apple's devices.

That said, this is not a proper Nokia. It doesn't have any charm nor personality.

Looks pretty nice, and for $250 it'll be a great entry-level tablet. I've still got my eyes set on the Nvidia Shield Tablet however.

I like the design so far, interested to get my hands on this as it could potentially be a nice piece of gear.

So, was it the phone business that Nokia sold to MS, or will they still be making phones too? And MS can no longer use the Nokia name now?

Seems like a decent tablet for the price. Hope this works out for them.

Nokia can't bring new phones to the market until 2016 (and no new feature phone for the next decade). And yeah, Microsoft can't use the Nokia brand on smart phones anymore.

In a grand scheme of things this is just a small experiment for Nokia. The profit comes from non-consumer business (network solutions and navigation).

The design comes from Nokia but other stuff is outsourced.

DOA.

Might as well call it the Nokia N1: A Tablet of Ice and Fire.

Nothing released in China contains Google apps and the Play Store isn't even available in China. Even when Google owned Motorola and released phones in China, it didn't include them.

Still... They can't compete if they don't have them.

Not to be blunt, but you are not getting the full picture. It has been announced for China first, where Google's services are never included. It should have the full Google Apps suite when it comes to Europe, as it's customary with Chinese devices such as Huawei's.

Otherwise it'll be dead with a capital D.

So far as I can tell that's it. Foxconn stuff with the Nokia name, like a lot of the cheap TVs on sale which are a Vestel unit underneath and Toshiba branding for example.

Prepare to go to court. Dat ipad mini clone.

In many lawsuits Apple has asserted a design patent and lost virtually all of them. They lost that part of the California case, they lost in Netherlands, they lost in the UK, they lost in Australia. Apple have had exactly one victory and it was a very narrow judgement limiting sales of the Tab 10.1 in Germany.

Design patents are almost unenforceable and copyright is so narrow that even a minor change to the overall design is enough to avoid legal trouble.
