Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, has overseen an assault by a unit of special forces on a full-scale mock-up of the Blue House, the official residence of the South Korean president.

The state-run Korea Central News Agency reported on Sunday that Mr Kim monitored a series of exercises involving the special operations battalion of the Korea People's Army Unit 525, including artillery bombardments of targets and infiltration of South Korean targets.

The highlight of the drills, which are believed to have taken place on Saturday, one day after South Korean President Park Geun-hye was impeached, was the assault on the Blue House.

In footage broadcast on national television, troops used ropes to descend from helicopters before commencing their attack, with the replica of the Blue House later pictured wreathed in smoke. The images also showed attackers firing semi-automatic weapons into the building.

Mr Kim was also pictured standing in front of heavily armed members of the unit. "Watching the brave service personnel independently and proactively perform their combat duty, destroying specified targets of the enemy, he said with a broad smile on his face: 'Well done, the enemy troops have no space to hide themselves, far from taking any counteraction' ", KCNA reported.

He also ordered the unit to be ready to "conduct bold combat actions with the southern part of Korea as their theatre."

Quoted by Yonhap News, a South Korean military official suggested that the high-profile exercise had been staged to celebrate the downfall of Mrs Park, who has maintained a hard-line policy against the North.

Hwang Kyo-ahn, the South Korean prime minister and acting president, on Saturday issued orders for the military to increase its readiness to deal with any provocative acts launched by the North as it seeks to exploit the unstable political situation in the South.

He highly praised the commanding officers and men for having bolstered up the unit to be invincible ranks.

He said that if the service personnel of the unit are to conduct bold combat actions with the southern part of Korea as their theatre, they should stage intensive drills for marching, firing, swimming, overcoming natural obstacles and acquiring ability to maneuver in fields under the simulated conditions of an actual battle and thus firmly prepare themselves to be stalwart fighters for guerrilla warfare.

He set forth strategic tasks to be carried out for increasing the combat readiness and bolstering up the combat capabilities of the People's Army.

He met the combatants who took part in the drill and highly praised them for their success in the rehearsal.

He gave a pair of binoculars and an automatic rifle to the battalion before having a photo session with them.

One of these days I hope to get my hands on one of the notebooks that the officers surrounding Kim hold.

Also hoping it'll just be full of dick doodles.

Does he honestly think that if his soldiers somehow got into downtown Seoul they'd continue fighting? After they saw how much better it was?

Is this like North Korean LARPing or something?

Haven't been following the latest with North Korea. They don't really think they can invade SK, do they?

Seoul isn't exactly very far from the demarcation line between North and South. A rapid bull-rush invasion could reach Seoul in a matter of hours.

NK wouldn't ever do it because the counter-attack would represent the end of their regime. South Korea would be backed by the US armed forces and would quickly stop the NK advance. More likely than not, simultaneously China would invade from the other border to secure control of the country before the Americans can.

Pretty much all militaries in the world have mock-up versions of important strategic locations to hold training exercises on.

Of course the fact that the North Koreans are brazenly acknowledging them now that the South Korean president is getting impeached is a big display of penis waving.
